ANET LETS END THIS PET MISSERY
This is a great idea, and there are actually more options how to implement this. I personally would add the second ability to a quick double press of the attack button.
This would also fix the smoke scale problem: assault attack and smoke filed could be both used on demand!
Either way, getting control over both main pet abilities would be a great improvement for ranger pet control, and I am sure it could be done without losing any of the existing pet control.
i don’t have any objection in principle. But F3 for return to me is way more important than additional control over individual skills.
double tapping for an ability sounds dubious at best to me, in terms of reliability, useability, and user-friendliness.
I agree with this, it open a whole new world for ranger. Pet would be a tool rather than a random factor most of the time. I could see alot of use considering how diverse the pets are! Ex: Drake tail swipe blast, moa healing, bird swiftness on demand (for travelling), etc.

Imagine F1 as a weapon swap. If you press it once on target, your pet will attack if you press it again, it will call pet back, you don’t need to spam F1 because there is no benefit of that. That’s why Attack/CallBack in F1 would be a MUST since CORE 3 years ago. and on F3 put the 2nd active.

Another solution would be:
- allow us to choose which of the 3 skills is activated by f2
- allow us to disable any of the 2 remaining skills, so the AI doesn’t use them at all.
Been waiting over 3 years for this. 1 week after initial release I was expecting this to be improved any time now…
Logged in PURELY to bump up this post. I mentioned the same idea on a post awhile back, but we definitely need to get it noticed. It would make pets great, and useful being able to pick which of their abilities occupies the F2, or even having the option of F2 or F3 as activation skills. I don’t feel implementing this would even put much, if anything, out of balance, which is often the main issue with changing skills.
DEVS take note!
The pet menu has “beta placeholder” written all over it in 24 different languages. We’ve been expecting improvements that allow us to tweak our pets.

Thinking about it, a toggle as OP is suggesting would actually be great, if having a target would affect this:
Switching target and pressing F1 would always prioritise attack and after that it would cycle: come back to me→attack→come back to me→ attack → new target →attack, and no target obviously would just function as “come back to me”. Although maybe a toggle between “attack nearest target” and “come back to me” without a target would make sense.

Just here for bumping.
No point posting this, they don’t read the forums, not even the titles. They could truly care less about this class and their balancing team doesn’t even play the game. But for what it’s worth this should have been in at launch 3 years ago.

I love the idea, I’ve seen it circulated numerous times over the years, and I have no idea why it isn’t a thing beyond it being “tricky” to program.
Example, since guarded/passive pet would still exist, does the toggle automatically swap when the pet engages the enemy? And how does that work when you target swap with a Guarded pet? Same sort of concept with the Guard shout.
Not that it’s impossible at all, it just brings up another thing that should be addressed; Guard mode needs to be removed (the mode toggle in general; this is also where the new F3 skill slot would be placed), just as the Guard shout functionality needs to be reworked entirely.
If these things haven’t already received any sort of thought or attention though, we’re in for a long wait….. :/ (optimistically assuming that it’s on ANets radar).

yes please Anet change it like this way !!!
it would been even better if you could distribute stats of the pet and every pet has the same amount of stat points (but different stat caps→bears could have more vitality than birds etc etc.), because if you want to have a specific type of pet, but it has not the right stats or just less than another kind of pet (E.G. Drakes have more stats than a canine) it will just broke the expirience.

I fully support this idea, it’s fantastic. I’m worried they’ll say “sorry, no time/resources, maybe next year”
They could implement your idea, … or they use my idea, since it gives the Ranger much more control over his pet.
I remember Devs responding to this in a old “state of the game” stream. About how Rangers should have more pet control.
They said something along the lines of “It would be too complicated for players to use.”

Personally I would love to see this change. + 1

Awww I had a thread in the PvP forum asking for the same thing but they closed it… https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/Ranger-Pets-Need-a-Nerf/first#post5670952
Would rather have F1-F3 be pet attacks and Attack My Target/Return To Me become keybinds in pet control instead of the profession mechanics. Been using Guard/Avoid Combat as my F1 & F3 ever since it got a keybind that those controls are almost unnecessary.
Will update once Path of Fire releases.

…That’s a stupid reason if they really said that. How would this be any different from engineer toolbelts?
I remember hearing/reading that devs said this would make rangers OP, but I’m not sure where I got that from.
The only issue I would have with this would be, how would things like taunt/wilting strike work with it? Would it still be glued onto the standard F2 attack?

That’s lazy work, me as programmer i would take 1 day, and make this change like this.
If you put mouse over any of them, it would slide out swap button, which would let you swap F2 and F3 skills, F2 would be the skill that taunts.
