I’d like some advice/builds for my ranger I’m buidling.
What I’d like is
A good leveling Build/Skill set
PVE Endgame Build/Skill Set
PVP Build/Skill Set
and possibly even WVW Oriented Build/Skill Set

I’ve heard SB/Axe is beast, but I’ve also heard LB/GS does wonders as well. Just looking for some advice. Thanks!

Advice for a new ranger:
-PvE: get 0/0/5/0/5 initially, this creates a basis for everything you will need to get your ranger started. From there progress to either the classic 30/30/5/0/5 or something of your liking. The point of PvE is having a ton of damage, even if your survival isn’t too great this will force you to learn the skills needed to survive end-game content. You may modify your PvE build as you like, do check out the forums for different PvE end game builds.

-Dungeons: As soon as you start doing dungeons ask yourself: am I level 80 yet? If no, then do your best to learn how to not die, most pre-level 80 ranger setup does not focus on survival, which is ok because you want to provide your party with high DPS. Just learn how not to die and what to do to really stay alive.

-End game PvE/PvP/WvW: it all depends on your approach, but to make things very simple for you there are two main roads:
1. High DPS, be it with bows or melee weapons. (you have a ton of damage, your pet does not).
2. Beast master, that says it all. (you have low damage but you are much harder to kill, your pet does a ton of damage).

Explore these paths, including the condition damage options. A lot more detail can be found in the forums regarding how to go about them.

Your approach should reflect your game play style, high DPS and condition builds are optimal in groups, but only a Beast Master build can stand alone in the face of danger. Once you have your build in mind, support it with your gear. Leave things out of your gear that you deem unnecessary, certain gear will give you precision when you could instead use healing power.

-Spirit build: Very useful in underwater and PvE/Dungeon runs, but you really need to know what you are doing to use spirits effectively.

-Support build: This is focused entirely on giving your party constant support. It is a mix of Beast Master and Spirit build with a ton of wilderness survival. Many variations exist on this, but the main point is to survive and help keep your party alive. This is quite rarely seen, most people prefer high DPS builds, but I have seen it used very efficiently in PvP.

-Side notes: ranger can be a very complex class to master and to refine to your needs, but with the above you can get an idea of where to get started. There are hybrid builds and tons of variations to go around, but stick to the basics above and move from there. Above all… have fun!

I have, though I have little time to read through all of them and try each one of them on my now lvl 21 ranger. PVP seems fun enough with SB/axe&horn.

Just looking for some experienced opinions. My 3 decked out toons are a Warrior, Thief, and Ele. So, its a different ball game for me in a sense

If you want to be competitive in every aspects of the game, you would be better serve as a mesmer to be honest, it is no sarcasm. They do better pve, pvp and wvw.

no offense but you come here asking alot of different build where the main page of the ranger forum is covered with and have a sticky about them.

Regards to Brazil, works like a charm in PvE for me, you have to be moving though and use your skills to dodge to not get downed, but when stacking all your skills you’ll be rampaging.

With this build I always have atleast 65% crit and at best 93%. Don’t know if you can have higher then that.
Only change i did was getting a 5% damage sigil on horn and a generosity on my short bow, to use as a condition remover for myself.

Other build i used for a little bit is this one, allthough i don’t know if it still works after the patch, but the pet damage was awsome. Again i only pve, for dungeons this build is not that good since your pet stays squishy. I send in my pets to other monsters while i just went to other monsters to smash them.

PvE off course is easy. You can find this build over here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdsmOmMwXCo

Both builds has great damage from the pets, don’t ignore them. They are amazing.

No offense taken, I know I put up a lofty request. Just don’t get enough time in my work week to dig through it all during the summer.

For leveling I would go for full power, or full condition damage. If you go power, take longbow, and greatsword or sword+dagger/warhorn. If you go condition, go with axe/torch, sword/dagger or shortbow. Get a bear, canine, devourer to tank for you, some say drakes are also good. What your pet can’t facetank, most probably you wont either. 5 points in wilderness survival is really nice for the endurance regen. I wouldn’t put 5 points into Beastmaster trait line as in some recent patch the quickness on petswap got changed. I’d go 5 into nature magic instead. The rest you can use as you see fit.

Quick tip for levelling:

Take Axe/Warhorn, and fire trap. It’ll make killing mobs so much faster.

Or you could just play and see what you like, rather than relying on others to push you in a direction. Especially where leveling is concerned it’s certainly not hard to do with a Ranger.

Define being competitve in a game mode like pve. If you mean because you won’t get sought after for speed clears then sure I suppose ranger is a poor choice because of community bias even though the current fastest cof p1 clear had a ranger in the group. If spotter and frost spirit is the Ranger’s niche then so be it, it’s no different than people bringing mesmer along solely for their utility because it surely isn’t for their personal damage. These forums are filled with people that proclaim how their profession is useless at this or that and how every other class has it so much better, case in point go to the mesmer forum and see what they are saying over there about their lack of presence in high level tPvP at the moment due to condi damage being all the rage. I suppose my point is, every single class in this game is “competitive” with one another in some aspects and the “grass is greener” attitude really should be avoided.

Oh dont get me wrong on this. I main the ranger and i love the hell out of the class. Like you said though, we aint a sought after class and higher level fractal get more and more annoying for us because i could say that half our damage in “most of the specs” come from the pet. Ive notice the higher you go, the easier it is for your pet to get one shotted out of the blue. I take good care of it, i drop my heal for it even if i dont need it, i got passive/attack mode, call back, attack and switch pet maccroed for controlling my pet the best i can and even there, it can die easy which mean losing a huge chunk of my dps.

Its just the way the OP talked about the specs he wanted in different scenario, i just think a mesmer is the better choice. I think a Mesmer compete better in higher PVE environment like speed runs and high fractal, every classes can do any dungeons and such, its not that hard. In roaming i think the mesmer got the upper hand and in spvp regular they seem to perform well as far as i can see from the games i play.

About tournement or ranked spvp, i got no clue at all.
