Hi all. Don’t know if I already posted here before so I’ll begin with long-time forum veteran of other forums, first time poster here. So I am right now playing a lot with my 1st alt (an at the moment level 69 Sylvari Ranger). I am right now on the road of bringing him to level 80. I’m doing a trial run with a gear set I picked up at level 65 and am wondering advice and opinions at level 80 because I don’t know if (at all) this gear set should be what I end up with at 80 and need some advice from fellow Rangers. My level 65 gear set is as follows:

level 65 Masterwork Valkyrie medium armor complete set (Power/Vit+Ferocity) with complete set of Superior Rune of the Ranger (escalating Precision/Ferocity bonuses with +7% dmg bonus with a pet in combat)
level 65 Assassin’s Longbow with Superior Sigils of Air and Frailty
level 65 Assassin Sword and Dagger combo with Superior Sigil of Earth on sword and Superior Sigil of Venom on dagger
level 65 set of Emerald Platinum jewelry (Power/+Precision+Toughness)
level 65 Assassin’s Harpoon Gun and Spear with Superior sigil of Earth and Hobbling on the Harpoon Gun and Superior Sigil of Earth and Frailty on the Spear)
Ranger pets: Black Bear (land primary), Alpine Wolf (land secondary), Armorfish (sea primary), Shark (sea secondary)

My initial thoughts on the build is while I see a lot of direct damage coming from the character (and can usually drop enemies to my level who get past my bear before they get close to me because I usually critically hit enemies up the wazoo) the weaknesses I see is that his total HP is anemically low with the build and there have been times where I have been surrounded by enemies that got past the bear and I barely made it out alive even with good movement and use of skills. Plus I designed my sigil set in that each sigil (except Superior Sigil of Air) boosts performance of a condition the weapon already inflicts with its skill.

Those are my initial thoughts. If I keep this build the one thing I might change is Jewelry at 80. From a Platinum Emerald set to a Azurite set for the Power/Toughness/Vitality combo. Also if I keep this build into level 80 my armor at 80 will be exotic level, weapons and jewelry will be rare level. But of what I’ve done at 65 and aside from my own thoughts on it what are yours? My goal for the Ranger is to be an all range consistent crit hit damage dealer who unlike a “glass cannon” build can take at least 2-3 big hits before being in trouble. Nether one is meta but they can both obliterate any other builds and have good sustain and mobility.

If you are talking about pve anything works, but generally a pure glass canon (berzerker for a power build, viper for a condi build) is the way to go

Also never use the bear pet, it is the worst and least dmg reliable pet that cannot hit anything that is not standing still. If you wish to use a tanky pet use a drake, they can stay alive just fine and can hit hard

I dueled a thief who said he mained ranger and he told me the menders pvp build was bad and the demolisher’s was better. Then I 2-0’d his demolisher’s druid.

:) Demolisher is quite strong on LB Druid right now but, as I am sure you know, not as strong as Menders. Menders is strongest Druid/Ranger amulet. Especially when coupled with Staff and Sw/X.

Also, look into River Drake and Lynx/Jaguar for pets. Bears are tanky, but.. Kinda useless at damaging things. Damage = Good. Much of a Ranger’s personal DPS is tied to pet, must use it for damage purposes!
