Anyone else excited for new pets?
Boon eater pet.
Maybe a corrupted-ish from the Dragonbrand (Chaos/Ethereal theme)
Not really.
Though, I’m kind of surprised we didn’t get the chance to have a Juvenile Smogscale in the new map.
Even though it’s just a color palette swap of the Smokescale, at least its version of Smokescreen blinds foes instead of being evasive while inside of it.
Would have been a nice addition to have that pairing. Kind of like in the old days when slotting an Eagle/Hawk or Raven/White Raven was a thing.
Will update once Path of Fire releases.
I want monkey pet f2 throw banana to knock down the foe
Anything that can hit players would be nice.
I feel the same way about pets as I do about skills, utilities, elites, traits, professions and elite specializations: Would greatly prefer reworks and fixes of weak and completely useless ones rather than new additions.
Don’t see much of a point of being able to pick between 50 pets if the majority has very little use in the actual game outside of roleplaying purposes.
All though, I can see roleplaying and how much people like to get shiny new things as a reason why new pets would be good.
Edit: Actually, imagine if they allowed you to pick the looks, types, skills and even traits of your pet like you do with your characters. Now that would be an exciting change.

I disagree here. While most pets are totally useless 99.9% of the time, I like the option. I suppose the best example is brown bear, which is garbage, but at least used to see action during the Ol Tom fight. Not sure if it still does as I don’t play fractals anymore, but you get the idea. As long as a pet has a theoretical use, I’d prefer new good pets so we just have more options.
I feel the same way about any options we get. The more the better, as sometimes things just work perfectly for that one little role. Nomads for WvW commanders, minstrel’s for raids, etc., on otherwise pretty useless stat combos.
Of course ideally they’d upgrade the garbage core pets in addition to new pets… Most of their F2s are hysterically outdated. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Icy_Roar
i don’t want more crap to have to do the scavenger hunt for those.
i want the pet system to be reworked to work and be fun, and actually i wouldn’t mind more skins.
But first the pets to be fun to play with.
The thought of new pets excites me but I’m tempering my excitement until I know what our new elite will do. If I have to grind out Hero points for an Elite that might dump my pet so that Anet won’t have to work on fixing things for core Ranger and their pets (especially pre-HoT ones), I’m not entirely sure I’ll bother with the next expansion as it would be a waste of my time. Of course, we won’t know anything until Anet lets the cat out of the bag so I’ll just say that having access to new pet abilities is never a bad thing.
TLDR – I’m always down for more pets. There is no such thing as too much for me and hunting them down to tame is half the fun.

Might have misworded that a little. I am fully aware of the niche uses of many of the pets nor do I disregard them simply because their uses do not apply to me. The Brown Bear is indeed an defensive option for PvE and WvW. Even if I have no need for it myself.
Your point about the need for variety is a valid one. What I was trying to say is that I do not think adding five new pets per expasion is a good thing when 15/45 (we could even say 10 if we wanted to spread it that far) pets have no uses at all, not even niche uses like the bear does.
Of course in a perfect world, they’d upgrade the core pets and add more pets equally as powerful as the Smoke Scale on top of that. But if I had to pick, I’d take upgraded pets over new ones. As many of them are nothing more than color/skin swapped version of another superior pet now.
Not really.

I was thinking that myself – including the thought that while the smogscale is an easier beast to fight than the smokescale, the smogscale would probably have more utility for a player.
There are also a bunch of creatures that NPCs keep taunting us by having as pets when we can’t. I’ll accept that ogres might have training techniques that rangers of other races don’t have, but we know at least one member of a playable race has a raptor – how about it?
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
I wouldn’t mind a few more provided they add a utility. Gorilla, basilisk, wind rider, and an octopus are just a few that would work, though they could add new animals in the new zones like HOT.
a raptor – how about it?
Make it a pocket raptor and give me a dozen.
I definitely want to see new pets in the game that are not locked behind the expansion (the conditions under which you can tame the HoT pets are ridiculous for a casual gamer like myself). I was way too spoiled by WoW – if there was an animal in the game, you could tame it, no questions asked. You could have a viper, a raptor – anything. I remember even taming a special white named tiger that is only available through a quest. I love Ranger/Hunter classes, but GW2’s pet selection is incredibly depressing for me. I don’t play WoW anymore due to not wanting to pay a subscription fee and the irritating changes they made to the game over the years.

Not knowing a single thing about WoW, were the pets balanced in any way? That sounds like an awful experience unless the pets were completely generic. Imagine PvPing where one guy has a rabbit pet and one has a 50 foot dragon pet.

Thanks for asking, and my answer is that all pets were roughly the same size, none were too small or too large, and never larger than your character (hell, you could tame a T-Rex, but it was only ever the same height as your toon). What made taming them all fun and interesting is that, just like in GW2, each animal type has a different skill. A snake could poison, tiger could bleed, something else could do fire attacks, etc. I think…they all had only one special skill just like GW2 has, but…it’s obviously been a very long time since I last played!
I really want more variety of pets in GW2 and for more options to be available in the core/vanilla maps.

Much like yourself I used to play a hunter in WOW. I agree there were a lot of pets, they were less customized though. You had them broken up into Tank, DPS, and PvP. They all pretty much played similar with minor differences. In GW2 the pets actually have more diverse utility. A wolf vs a tiger is definitely unique. Where Anet dropped the ball, is making the HOT pets better than previous pets. The wyvern had such slow attacks it was practically useless for almost practically the entire expansion, this left the smokescale, bristleback, and the tiger as the best pets. And of course two of these pets were also only available in the final map meaning HOT’s hostility towards solo play meant you weren’t getting there easily unless you had a group to help you get there.
The bristleback was a massive headache with veterans able to kill a player in one barrage. I recently checked and the trait I had to use to beat them is no longer able to reflect projectiles.
The two best advantages of GW2 is my pet doesn’t lose agro, in MOP this was all too common for a Hunter since our high damage was too much for the pet to keep aggression. And the pet swap this was far more helpful, this meant no more dead pets cause they had low health, leaving you to have to hope you could down the enemy before they beat you.
Pack of pocket raptors or go home. That is the way I see it…

Hárvey Wallbanger – Alt Warrior (Ehmry Bay)
I just want a raptor pet super cute

There is at least one NPC is Orr with a pet raptor. I’ve always wondered if that was something they thought about adding at one point. It probably doesn’t make sense anymore because the HoT pets are new animals with better skills. A raptor is just a reskinned moa.
They could always do a bit of skill swapping so it’s a win-win. Change the F2 on Pink/Black Moa to provide a boon like the other Moas (except White) – maybe something powerful like AOE Resistance (2s).
Then, give us a tamable Raptor with a Dazing Screech. All good from there.
