Are Pets Considered Companions?

Obviously, No

However, for game purposes, animal companions (pets) are indeed “companions” and “allies” and “teammates” and any other variation of the terminology that gets used in the tooltips.

I’d call pets companions and uplevels pets.

I was looking at rune of the ranger which is almost identical to the rune of the eagle except for the 6th benefit. With pets considered companions, we should get the 5% because of our pet.

For the runes of the ranger, yes, pets are considered ‘companions’.
As long as you have one pet up, you get the 5% damage bonus. Remember that unless you have a 7th rune in your aquabreather, you loose the bonus underwater.

I have been using these runes for a long time, however, they are not so great for me now, since I dropped my power/crit build for a BM build. Cannot bring myself to overwrite them as they are expensive to buy or craft.

Hopefully, power/crit rangers will become viable again, so they can be put to better use.

I was trying to run 20/x/20/x/30 but recently decided to switch it to x/20/20/x/30 and figured that the superior rune of the ranger was a decent choice as well as being cheaper (about 60% less) than ‘of the Eagle’.

Honestly, the difference to my precision was much greater than the difference to my power in terms of damage.

As far as stats go. What should they be at as a minimum?

Is there any soft/hard caps on stats? Any diminishing returns?

My pets are too poorly programmed to be companions. They’re just dumb lugs that follow me around and suck up my DPS without my say-so.

Well, hopefully with the update pets will land their hits more consistantly.

As for right now I use SB/GS, with SB as primary. I try and use SB skills 4 and 5, Elite skill is entangle, and being Sylvari I use the racial immobilizing skill. Although it is sad that I would have to go to such lengths just so my pet can actually land some hits on a moving target.

Actually if we look at how ANet has been trying to fix the ranger class… it seems that you are the pet, and that the ranger is the companion.
