So engineer and ranger are probably the two classes I know least about. Help me out here.
I see a lot of rangers in speedclear / high dps videos. Sometimes more than 1 per party.

What’s up with that?

PvE, as in open world? If so, then Rangers are probably at the top.

If in dungeons, they’re at a pretty good place. Most everyone has a general thought that Rangers suck in dungeons. Which they do, as will any class if the player sucks. It actually takes some thought to be good/useful in a dungeon. A bad Ranger will be dead weight. A bad warrior/guardian will at least contribute something. I play a Ranger and it’s funny when I see a warrior/guardian doing so bad compared to how I’m playing on a Ranger.
TL;DR Rangers take more skill to be good in dungeons.

If in WvW, Rangers make excellent solo roamers and small team roaming with a condi/regen build. A power build, not so much.
If you’re zerg surfing, then a power build with LB and traited for piercing arrows and 1500 range makes you golden. But then again, you just can’t blindly spam auto attack. Your weakness are thieves who target you with they’re ability to stealth and KO you assuming you’re running a full offensive power build.

I use my ranger primarily for PvE/dungeon running and I find it to be a beastly PvE class. In open world stuff, my cats can easily tandem-tank any champion mob while still tearing it a new one. Aside from being SERIOUSLY gang mobbed and overwhelmed (I’m talking like chain agroing 8+ mobs with a couple veterans in there) there’s nothing I can’t handle in the open world.

In dungeons when you get good at managing/protecting your pet it’s like adding a legit 6th party member. I agree that rangers are a lot tougher to play sucuessfully than face roll warriors, but a good one can be a real boon.

Is there a class that isn’t? I’ve 6 of the classes at 80 (haven’t made a Mesmer or Engineer yet) and can’t say any of them have had any trouble in any open world content. Orr, events, bosses, you name it, they all do great. I think that’s a testament to the open world content level of ease than the classes themselves, though.

One ranger can provide a few skills and traits that can boost dps in a speed running PvE Elite team. In these elite teams the weaknesses of the class are not exposed as mobs die too fast. Outside of these elite teams these select skills and traits are less important and all the weaknesses of the ranger are exposed.

Ranger blows through mobs the fastest due to fury + pet and can AFK 99% of content thus making them best.

If you can let go of the notion of the Ranger as a long distance nuker with a tank pet ( aka bow/bear suckiness ), the class does reasonably well in dungeons. Combining good dps and some useful support in one build is easier than for quite a few other classes.

No. Just think of it as ‘hard mode’ you just need to put more effort in to be as effective, but one doesn’t just ‘become’ a ranger. Hence it getting a bad rep with people playing them badly in groups.

GS warrior takes laughably long to kill anything in PvE due to the ridiculously long channel on HB.

Pick up spotter and a sword and stop camping @ 1200+ range. I bet a lot of people just plink away with longbow and offer 0 group support, thus wondering why the class sucks.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,

The problem isnt that ranger is a bad class but the balancing of all classes. If i just look at the ranger class i wouldnt have much to complain about. The same goes with any other class. The real problem appears when you compare the classes with eachother. For example: what can a ranger do what a war cant?
Nothing! A war can do much more damage, also has good grp buffs , can take more damage, has better aoe dps,… . Or take an ele: It has might/fury stacking, fiery grandsword, a lot of aoe damage/cc and range(!).
All in all the game gets dominated by the OPness of a few classes, because you basically need nothing different than damage, because with good damage everything dies within a second. So either make a proper class balancing or change the way pve works naimly its focus on pure damage.

Spotter and Frost Spirit. Also significant AOE healing if that is something that matters to you.

Warriors and rangers are in pretty much exactly the same place, warrior has banners + Empower Allies and ranger has Spotter + Frost Spirit. Damage is the same, might/fury stacking is roughly the same, etc. If you think warriors are OP and are complaining about rangers being bad then you need to play the game more.

“Pull and reflect.”

Warrior can reflect.

“Warriors and rangers are in pretty much exactly the same place”

No they’re not. The OP asked about PvE. Warriors are a country mile ahead of rangers and if the OP joins a PUG group tomorrow it’s going to be full of warriors, warriors that are going to do better than an equivalent ranger. PUG rangers are still likely to get kicked. There’s no point telling the OP about a state of the game he’s just not seeing.

I’d suggest playing the game more yourself. People don’t overload speed run groups with warriors for the ‘lulz’. They do it because crowd sourced min-maxing has time and again proven that they clear pve content the fastest with the least amount of effort.

The fastest class could be a walking kitten and speedclear’ers would still use it because it’s the best. They don’t bring/include rangers because they aren’t.

Go ahead and show me an all-warrior speedclear from this year, then.

Just because you specifically are bad with a class doesn’t make the class bad. Same deal goes even if the vast majority of players are bad with a class. And you think the pug warriors are any better? Half of them are running zerk gear but with full tank traits, and the other half isn’t even running zerk gear. Back when CoF farming was a thing I never saw an all-warrior group break 10 minutes unless I told them to stop being scrubs and learn to deal with me playing ranger because it was literally cutting clear times by 25%.

The fact of the matter is that ranger does pretty much everything the warrior does, equally well. There’s literally no reason not to take one of each to a speedrun except that most people don’t HAVE rangers, or think they’re too much effort to play. Seriously, go ask Brazil why he doesn’t use his ranger even though he has one geared.

The last 2 fractals I did with rangers were with a typical longbow ranger that sits back and shoots at the enemy.

Didn’t switch out of longbow a single time during the the fractal.

That ranger was using Eagle Eye, Signet of the Hunt and Signet of Stone during the entire time. Refused to take Spotter to help the team.

That’s why rangers get a bad name, because of bad rangers who don’t know how to play.

Sure, you’re the last one alive cause you were hiding in the back, avoiding being useful.

There was a ranger in fractals that stayed on ground level below the thaumanova reactor boss shooting at it with his longbow at 1500 range. I don’t know whether or not it’s actually possible to hit the boss from below but it was still hilarious that he still died first from being pulled to one of the portals below and killed by mobs.

There’s something about the class that pulls the most terribad pve players to it in dungeons. I’ve never ever had a good ranger in my team for any pve content. At best they were tolerable.

So lets think about this. Do you mean to say that all the bad players in the game are drawn to the ranger profession? All the better players play other professions? hmm what are the odds of that?

Maybe it’s the profession after all eh?

Open world rangers don’t learn enemy animations or combat tactics. Put arrows into the enemy and let the pet soak all the damage.

It’s actually very plausible as the same phenomenon has been observed in other MMORPGs with the “ranged, bow using, pet master” class archetype. They aren’t known as “huntards” in WoW for nothing you know…

I too think it has a lot to do with how absolutely trivial the pet makes solo open world content while leveling, in both games.

Perhaps further compounding this is GW2s “ranged dps is inferior” paradigm that is done for pvp reasons yet ends up conflicting with all the players choosing the class to be “THE bow user, 100%”

I’ve been running AC on my berserker ranger with gs/lb lately, and started using brown bear. It doesn’t suck, condi cleanse works. I can have 3 party condi cleanses on my ranger, I think that is pretty sweet. Also noone ever commented on my bear, cause I don’t send it in and use longbow, except P1, where it is really useful that way (again, condi cleanse for melee classes). I get that there are sucky rangers, but some will stay away from brown bear for all this hate, and they shouldn’t really. It has its uses, just like most of the pets.
