Are rangers that bad?
I don’t believe they’re bad. They’re not my fravorite, but they can still do some amazing things in given situations.
As for why people think they are bad might be because of one important thing: Rangers do best outside of melee range. Knowing this, it’s rather difficult to play as a Ranger when well more than half of the enemy encounters in any part of the game are melee (Warrior) or melee ranged (Elementalist dagger build), even if you are using a sword or greatsword. They just feel like they belong as far away from the fray as possible. At least that is what I think, anyways.

I highly disagree with Drake, while yes we really can’t make a great Glass Cannon Melee build, we can make some very survivable Melee Builds with the right traits equipment and Pet choices.
My current melee Heavy Build has zero issues with survivability in PvE, and holds in own in WvW. It’s nowhere near perfect and always in a state of tweaking but it’s a lot of fun to play.
I main a Ranger and I just have to say, Rangers aren’t really that bad when you don’t compare them to other classes. If you start comparing them to other classes, however, then they really can’t do a single thing better than any other class, and in many situations they are the worst class for the job compared to MOST other classes (read, MOST, not all, because they tie for equally-worst in some situations compared to other classes.)
Ranger is an amazing class for leveling and against dumb opponents. What your pet can’t tank, your ranger can kite.
In dungeons or against competent enemies however, it quickly becomes clear why we claim we’re sharing the bottom of the barrel together with engineers.
ranger is actually very powerful but it depends on alot of condidtions. you need to have a live pet attacking your target and as of right now there is really not that many options compaired to other classes as far as ability to play how you truly want, if you run support you need to be dropping spirits around your allies (which happens to usually be to close to the bosses in dungeons and they get one shotted from aoe, cause their range of effective ness is about as wide as the barrage field), traps do alittle bit of dmg, signents are slighly under par to other classes. but if you can use the right abillities at the right time and have pets up as long as possible you can go alot farther than many other classes…. really ranger just needs alot more skill/micro managing than really any other class to do well
