Are there any viable beastmaster builds?
Beast Mastery is not really a beast mastery.
It’s a healing trait line.
And healing in GW2 is not worth any investment at all.
I had one pretty interesting build that could melt a bunker guard in 5 seconds straight if he blew all his cooldowns…
… But that’s pretty much it.
I had to wait a lifetime afterwards since I was out of cooldowns or my pet died from breathing air as usual.
Hi, I use a BM build and its very effective.

I think this build is very fun cus you actually combo your attacks with your pet.
quickness on birds+poison master put tons of pressure. you have great healing defence and survivebility.

Except you die to every Zerk class and every Condi Pressure build.
And since you are Beast Master you are useless in team fights.
And you bring very little team utility.
And neither the damage nor the survivability are good =D
But yep, the build might work in 5 out of 10 duels.
I’ve had a hard time since the pet range and damage nerf and the quickness nerf and trait swaps personally. Fond memories of my Jaguar of days gone by… Sometimes, i look at my old Apothecary armour in the bank and i weep.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
BM doesn’t make sense anymore. 3 points in NM and an axe provides a higher damage pet than an equal investment into BM.
Thats my beastmasterbuild for PvP. It is not the best Teambuild, but Entangle and the fear of the wolf can save teammates, before they got stomped. With this build. you should focus on 1v1 and 2v2 fights, that happends more often while you are fighting at the sidepoints.

Wolf is a must-have for every single Build You will ever run as a Ranger.
Entangle is used in almost every single build there is. The only exception is the Spirit Build.
What’s the difference ?
The problem I think most people have with Healing is they still let theirselves get hit by burst. Unless you’re running Soldiers (and sometimes even then), eating a whole burst to the face is going to take you down.
That being said, Healing allows you to take quite a licking and recover from it much quicker if you have sufficient sources of healing. Having dodges (Vigor = more dodges) and evades/blocks (our weapons are awesome here) also helps quite a bit. Throw in Leap Finishers through Healing Spring and you can bounce back pretty darn well.
Group fights it does definitely provide less though … as does just about any tanky build unless their job is to hold a point because all of your tankiness is of very little help to your squishy teammate that is being focused.
Try your best to not make mistakes, but, when you do make mistakes, learn from them.
Better yourself.
I was actually just about to try out a new BM build. This is completely untested, and I already have some thoughts on how to improve it, but this is what I’m going to try when I get a chance.
Edit: Er, just tried this on the golems and wasn’t getting the numbers I’d hoped for. Even with 25 stacks of might and SotW active, axe doesn’t crank out enough damage. The bird hits like a truck, but I was hoping for more than that.
It might be more viable in an actually team fight scenario, because the numbers were low but there were an awful lot of them. Meh.

Axe has 3 uses:
- Use it with Fortifying Bond (3 points in Nature Magic) to stack Might on your pet … this can max your pet very quickly in some situations
- Bleed with Axe #2
- Chill with Axe #3
If you’re not a condition build and you don’t have Fortifying Bond, I’d be hard-pressed to recommend you use MH Axe.

Thanks. I was hoping for a way to improve on my pet in my build, but I guess not; at least not without significantly stripping my own capabilities.
No problem.
I was going to do the math for this … but when I googled Beastmastery, my old post from about a year ago came up.
I’ll have to double-check the numbers, but at a quick glance it seems still accurate.

If you want the highest burst on Ranger possible, I propose this build to try.
It still relies on the pet, so don’t expect any Ranked placement with that.
But it’s a lot of fun in normals.
Blows people up in seconds. All of them.

Ya, was just trying to come up with ways for both the ranger and the pet to be a threat, but it’s semi-pointless with the axe + fortifying bond you get with a normal condi build.
I feel like there is something close but it probably could only work in WvW where I can customize the gear a little better. Maybe use something more similar to the dueling spec I and others use, with BM, GS + 1h sword and no condis. The whole idea started because I use cele amulet on my condi-survival build, and the axe hits hard enough to be a respectable contributor to the condis, but it doesn’t seem to be able to scale much further.
At least sword still gives might to the pet.
I’m kind of tired of seeing these posts. Haven’t played in a while and still this question keeps getting asked.
So here just take it and go
Defensive variant

A more power/healing oriented BM build instead of your typical condition damage bleed stacking roll around while my pet hits you build.

But the thing is… Defensive variant is pointless. Bunker ranger is far inferior to his Guard buddy. There’s just no reason to take the defensive variant from objective poin of view.
For the offensive variant – it lacks condi removal, it will get melted by Zerk classes like Thieves and Mesmers… So what’s the point of taking a dueling spec (pet is dead in teamfights) when you don’t even have the upper hand in duels?
Also: Why would you overkill the direct damage, when you know that BM ranger specializes in sustaining a fight while his pet deals the direct numbers?
Does not make sense. You need to invest 3 stats only to be effective in Power Variant. That leaves no space for defensive ones – that BM needs. Condition damage is ideal since it only requires 1 stat to be invested for the results very close to the 3 stat power variant.
