[Balance] What went wrong
Natural Regeneration heals the pet and the ranger.(edit: the tooltip is wrong and has been for some time now)
SotW heals pet and ranger
the SotW trait heals the pet and ranger
Invigorating Bond is an AoE heal
Now why would a game that had a specific mechanic for a specific class not be the correct way to play the class? Better yet why continue the class at all if not to accel at said mechanic?
Allright, I’m gonna dumb it down for you.
1. Bows weren’t the mechanic for rangers in GW1. Expertise was – energy management, which affected more than just core ranger skills. " The primary attribute line enhances a profession’s “natural abilities” – http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Primary_attribute (I heard you like linking to old wiki pages).
2. There is no “correct” way to play a class/profession in a game revolved around build making. Why would they even bother giving us a choice if that was the case?
3. GW1 was built around having specific weapon attributes to different professions due to the secondary profession mechanic. As I said, that’s the only reason they split attributes across profession. And what happened the second Anet decided to not go with dual professions for GW2? Every single profession gets multiple weapons to choose from..

I’m just hoping natural regeneration continues to heal us as well as our pet. You’d think with all the trait changes they are making they could take the 2 seconds to correct the tool tip.
The beast mastery skill has only ever healed the pet. The signet heals us and the pet.
Ummmm nope. Go test it out yourself.

Then mine is broken as it has never healed me. I only recieved passive healing while food was active or I had on the signet.
Literally just tried it with the only trait I picked. No regen after taking falling damage.
I’ll try falling farther… hmmmm interresting. Never knew that! I stand wrong on this one.

Also affects the ranger, healing for 133 every 3 seconds.
Only active during combat.
Compassion training will increase the heal to 177 every 3 seconds on the ranger.

Yup, I’m pretty sure that’s what happened. It works the same for everyone in the game but yours is broken.
Any thoughts on if zerk is still going to be the go to gear set for PVE rangers? the same goes for ranger runes vs scholar runes. Maths will have to be done once the patch actually hits and things are more permanent. If axe or sb did more direct damage i could see rampagers competing with zerk for best dps.
It’s going to be Zerk most likely. With the changes to Flanking Strikes, it relieves having to take a couple pieces of Assassin’s gear now. Likewise with other classes and how much crit chance modifiers added in.
Will update once Path of Fire releases.

I think you’re broken.

I very well may be! I’ve never claimed to not be. But my ranger still needs to fit his description.

Yup, I don’t see it changing much for PvE. I will definitely be running some more cavalier stats on a wvw build thanks to the remorseless trait.
But my ranger still needs to fit his description.
No, you just need to realize that the ranger never was designed to only use bows.
Ranger does fit its description! It is just also really good at melee.
I’ll post it again.
What are the situations around it though? 25 stack of might from ANOTHER source while hitting an up level light armor? That is not a good representation of the class as I can post a lundry list of my combat log where I hit on average about 3-4k auto attack. My barrage still hits for 1.5k per tick. My rapid fire still hits for about 1.2k-1.5k per hit. I maybe hit with 3 arrows total on my rapid fire simply because they dodge one time or walk slightly to my flank at close range and the cooldown hits without fireing a single arrow.
@Natfrog,
You are more than welcome to use just a bow, but you are really hindering yourself by not building in a melee choice as well…if you’re happy with the way your playing, then be happy and leave it at that, and let everyone get back on topic.

… We were almost back on topic. Please ignore the troll.

But the DPS is not in line with other skills of the same caliber. Why bring a Barrage to WvW when I can meteor storm for more damage? Why rapid fire if the arrows that do hit are not in line per hit as say a single swipe of a greatswords hundred blades. The arguement of distance in a mute point simply because the gap can be closed in an instant in this game. With one check box my mele auto targets flanking enemies in mele range while my arrows do not and my skills do not so I have to either fall back a little and reset before I use my skills or I am FORCED to swap to mele. It is a programming isuue in that respect though.
I don’t agree with much of anything you say Natfrog, but I will say that I too wish Barrage had a bit more oomph. I’m already very envious of the Dragon Hunter’s LB5.

Exactly! They need more power on their skill when you look at other skills similar. They act like I’m asking for the auto attack to get buffed.
Ok, I’ll stop now, I promise. puts away bag of feed
You know, I see good things ahead for us. We were already good before, no matter what people thought or how they underestimated, but now, many more options and more utility. More burst damage and more support. More condition damage and more pet damage. More pet utility and sustain. All good things.

Same thoughts here, think ranger will just get more fun to play after the trait update.
Probably still playing ranger.

How are pets getting more damage? The tanky part effects each (pet and master) independantly or just based off the master? So while I am above 90% health does my pet take 50% less damage the entire time?

- Predator’s Onslaught: +10% damage vs foes with movement impending conditions (up from 5%).
- Sharpened Edges: Now applies to pet.
- Pack Alpha: +10% pet damage when the Player is above 90% health.
- +150 to Power, Precision, Toughness, and Vitality as a baseline
Probably a bit more but I can’t be kitten d to look up the rest. Also, Bark Skin is dependent on the Player. So, as long as you are above 90% hp, your pet will continuously take 50% less damage.

Um, with the new changes the pet can keep up much better with a strafing enemy. Remember, it will get a 30% speed increase, 20% CD reduction on its abilities and if you are going for a power build you can get zephyr for super speed on pet and for kiting.
Not to mention that you do not have to spec into MM anymore if you want a functioning Longbow. Playing a power build and going into WS,NM and BM is viable, is it not? Clarion bond is cool and all but what will you use it to blast on? You do not need pet swiftness either due to the 30% speed boost. Opening strikes is bad and quite honestly you will get nothing out of predators and steady aim. Lead the Wind is not needed. The whole line is worth it for either LtW or Remorseless but I would argue that you will get far more value out of the other lines.
I am aching to try this build in PvP:
WS:
-Oakheart salve, Refined toxins (only for the negative healing effect), Wilderness mastery
NM:
-Instinctual reaction, Evasive purity and Nature ward
BM:
-GftE, Natural healing and Zephyr swap
Pets: Fern hound and Jungle stalker
utilities: TU, Zephyr, LR, XXX, Entangle

I love the bark skin that sound crazy good but I see it being useless in PvP and WvW. Other than that our pets already have 300 stats with the current system so that was kinda already there. Pack Alpha I think is new? Sharpened edges is kinda weak as well as my pets unless ranged didn’t hit hardly anything even with the 30% IMS. Also did they get any armor or health buffs beyond that? If not they still going to melt when one AoE burst in WvW hits them. 50 plus casting on a single point and pet will always die so they are useless even with 50% reduction.

Opening strikes is going to be a lot better now that we can reactivate it with fury. Don’t have to worry about wasting it on aegis or anything now.
LGN
Does the pet use get OS on swap? it could be a nice dmg boost knowing that all pet use their highest hitting ability right after the swap in most case.

They will if you run the trait that blasts warhorn on pet swap

My guess is that Dungeons and such will … Most likely stay in Zerk Meta.
The End Game / Living World content will be dominated through Sinister Stats.

No improvement to toughness or vitality as far as I know. They could be tweaking stats behind the scenes or even in the future if they feel pets need an adjustment for the unknown “challenging PVE content” in store.
Only brought up the +150 stat points since it’s baseline. Yeah, the 300 points were already there, but it’s a nice bonus for Rangers that don’t take Beastmastery. My take on it at least. Pack Alpha is new, yes. It was basically Peak Strength moved and converted to affect the Pet instead. It’s also a nice bonus since Pack Alpha is a minor trait.
As for Bark Skin’s uses, there was some discussion on it for another thread. I still believe it was Anet’s solution for Rangers that wanted a -50% damage from AOE damage to pets in World vs World zergs. Took me awhile when pondering on it, seems like a fair enough compromise (if that was the intention).
As for being useful for PvP and WvW, any build that goes into Wilderness Survival for either EB or WK condition cleanse will benefit from it as it’s a minor trait. So, another nice bonus just for investing into a traitline.
Will update once Path of Fire releases.

Just to bring up a few things you mentioned, Clarions will be amazing because with the right traits from NM, you’ll essentially have perma-fury and swiftness, definitely so if warhorn is being run as well.
Couple that with WS and you essentially get a perma-5% damage reduction with oakheart on top of having perma-regen from windborne notes, and of course having Wilderness Knowledge to play off of Remorseless, which is mainly there since without any boon countering, Vuln is the mechanic we have to use to up our damage against boon heavy classes (Remorseless will actually be amazing with Skirmishing and Wilderness Knowledge on a condi build, or a GS burst based build).
And all that is on top of the 33% protection uptime and weakness output for Protective Ward hahaha.
Besides those few things though, I totally agree with the sentiment that BM looks amazing (if the traits have been done right as far as the range of the F2 traits and where in the anination they kick in). ANet has finally done for our “mechanic traitline” what most other classes have going for theirs; a reason and viable way to pick the traitline on any build and have it be a useful choice that boosts the mechanics effectiveness.
Very exciting for builds for sure!

If your speccing into BM you can take go for the eyes for another +300 toughness
If your speccing into BM you can take go for the eyes for another +300 toughness
And you can take spotter for + 150 precision! And you can take main axe with nature magic to stack 12 might on your pet. And you can also give vigor to your pet to provide absolutly nothing! (except the +1% dmg if you trait for it).
I am talking about PvP or WvW ofc. Not about PvE
Just for clarification: Is the piercing arrow trait for LB gone for good or am I missing something?
It is called Lead the Wind.
Just for clarification: Is the piercing arrow trait for LB gone for good or am I missing something?
The new trait Lead the Wind: While wielding a longbow your attack speed is increased by 10% and your arrows pierce. Longbow and Harpoon gun skills recharge 20% faster.
So this one also gives piercing arrow s for LB.
Oh ok. Then I just forgot.
