Best general Ranger build?
Roll a warrior, acquire longbow, profit.
it depends on what you want to do:
1)If you want to do dungeons and fractals you usually go full berserker stats and trait for spotter and at least adept major spirit trait.
2)If you want to do WvW zerging ranger is not a good choice at the moment
3)If you want to roam in WvW then you have 3 viable builds:
-spirits
-traps
-beastmaster
For point 3, I have found apothecary armor with 4xAltruism and 2xWater runes with some rabid/celestial traits lets me play all 3 builds effectively off of the same gear set. I use Axe/torch and Sword/horn. It works like a charm

go into WvW with said warrior and get facerolled by longbow ranger.
Currently @ some T1 server in EU

Do you really believe this? granted a warrior that ONLY has longbow wouldn’t be that great, but yeah I don’t see any ranger build whatsoever standing a chance against warrior with swords and longbow not even a ranger playing perfectly and warrior poorly.
Since the OP said general pve and slight WVW…
Slight = Very little
OP should just build for PVE and be done which means zerker gear and traits. Why would you build anything other than zerker for PVE … I haven’t the faintest.

Anyone who’s been playing ranger knows that I speak sooth. Ranger needs a LOT of love before we’re useful for anything but overworld PvE and spirit builds in PvP. Oh, also the condition/regen bunkers for roaming in WvW.
The problems, and Anet is very aware of it, are:
-the pet doesn’t work. Full stop. The lead game designer has said as much. He’s also said they have no plans of fixing it.
-we have 1 useful DPS weapon, and it doesn’t work properly. (1H sword auto-attack chain, I’m looking at you.)
-our utilities aren’t the most useful, and require full 30 point traiting to be functional.
-our damage (weapon skills/traps) is deliberately 30% lower than any other classes, because the pet is bringing up the difference. (see point 1 for why this is a failure).
-ranged combat, the ranger’s supposed specialty, is ineffective by design in melee wars 2.

Yeah I just reacted to his strange response, I only have rangers and warrior at 80 and although I barely play my warrior at all I know how easy it is to kill any ranger with it even when I make mistake after mistake from being rusty while facing a very competent ranger I will win with relative ease, actually I am pretty sure I could stay using only longbow and beat most rangers from range aswell.
Some of you guys are really depressing. Rangers shouldn’t be struggling with almost any class in 1v1, PU Mesmers and some other condition builds excluded. About the only thing I glean from most of the posts here on the Ranger sub-forum is that a lot of you guys need to step up your game.
Ranting aside — It’s tough to make an all around build for any class. PvE enthusiasts swear by Zerker stats only and that’s suicide in WvW for any class other than a Thief. The build I use now was designed to be a roaming spec for WvW and a good enough PvE spec for when I want to run dungeons/LS content with guildies.
PM me if you want more details.

You seem to defend ranger class a lot. My only lvl 80 class is ranger, and i ll have to admit that right now in wvw, we are inferior to the other current FOTM classes out there. Rangers are decent, thats all to it.
Maybe you’d care to share your build, so i could figure what i have been missing.

I rarely lose to warriors and I run full zerker. Can kill most of them in 1v1 in less than 10s.
As for the OP’s question, it really depends on what you want to do, or what you find the most fun.
If you looking for something that’s decent overall (1v1, small groups, and Zerg), maybe a spirit build. If you mainly like to zerg and want to be a killing machine, go complete zerker (as long as you know how to stay alive)
If your GvG or running with your guild mostly, well I suppose you have to go by whatever spec they want you in lol.

This guy… I’ve seen enough bad Rangers in dungeons to know I’m not amongst their ranks so I will assume you were talking to other people and not myself. The OP asked for a best general build siting WvW as a small fraction of the play time. Had it been reversed then I would have suggested something other than Zerker. I think a Celestial armor w/zerker trinkets/weapons ain’t that bad in PVE. Infact, I even have a set for my Ranger. But, most of the time I’m running the Zerker gear… and always traited for most DPS on all my toons.
I am running 30(1,7,12)/20(2,10)/0/20(6,9)/0, longbow and greatsword (which has way more utility than 1h sword and does not bind, which I prefer in PVE). I’m not very happy with pet AI and performance in general, so I do not use pet traits, but this build gives you a lot of freedom to retrait depending on situation, for example go 1 and 5 in skirmishing if you trust your pet or you expect a longer boss fight where your pet lives long enough.
Full zerker gear, weapons, and trinkets.
However remember that being a ranger will still make you not welcome in most groups…
^
cause no one need signets ranger in pve..for what?
same for bow and gs it´s never so good like sword/x and ranger have problems to stay in a effective way for pve

It wasn’t directed at anyone personally, but it applies to a lot of the posters in this sub forum. Instead of trying to solve problems and better themselves they’d rather scream for nerfs or blame classes (theirs or the ones beating them) for their loss.
It reminds me of playing MvC2 back in the days of arcade yore. There was a particular group of people who would blame their losses on the characters and not the fact that they didn’t spend time practicing the game, like the people beating them. It’s the same situation here, where these players want to see the results of practice and hard work without having to do any of that.
I could post a novella on this topic, but it would only further derail what the OP asked.
I agree with you, G, and your suggestion of going mostly (or all) Zerker stats since OP wants to spend most of his or her time in PvE. I just couldn’t ignore the fact that going full Zerk probably won’t get them great results in WvW.

Very impressive if so, I usually beat them too but that is only cause I know both classes very well and they are truly dreadful the second you meet a competent one you’re toast not matter what you do, in my experience.
