Best glass cannon pet?
when i do zerker builds for Roaming or sPvP, I use either Dogs or Spiders. Reason being I don’t need alot of damage form them as i am doing it and the CC from them will help me keep alive abit longer and get more attacks to land.
if you want to go all out glass canon you could use birds and cats.
Couple of options:
→Spiders if you want immob
→Cats for moar dps
→Dogs for cc
Imo the other pets aren’t really worth taking. I usually run either two cats, or jungle stalker(might) and drake hound/wolf(cc). But, it really comes down to personal preference.
I like to use spiders for immobilize and poison. Keep in mind that spiders attacks really slow and the projectile has the same problem as untraited Longbow. I suggest you use muddy terrain to make it easier for the spider to land those hits.
IMO you have basically no choice but to take CC pets. I recommend a drakehound and wolf. You don’t need more damage, you need a backup plan.
On the other hand, I often run in full berserker armor while using more tanky traits when I want to use dual melee in mediumish-small sized group (something like 2 0 6 6 0 or other variants.) In that case I’ll use a cat as a main since my damage dropped a lot, and wolf on switch because it’s just an incredible pet.
For PVE I’d say cats. My kitty isn’t in any real danger of dying with management and they do some nice DPS (the highest I hear) I do like to keep a dog on hand for fear or immobilization. As for wvw where I run a power ranger as well I run a dog main and switch to cat for mop up patrol after I’ve softened the targets or I’m satisfied I’ve cleared out enough aoe or dps that my cat can really do some work. Wolf’s fear is also very handy for stopping stomps or getting some space if you are being single targeted. I have a friend who is REALLY good at using a devourer as kind of a meat shield by keeping it in front of them. I never could get the hang of it though.

Ya this is not debatable, cats do the best single target damage for PvE and in most cases people are doing it wrong if their cat dies. There are a few niche pets like drakes or red moas.
But I think this thread is all about WvW, where pet choice is way more wide open. Honestly I’ve seen videos of people using pigs to excellent effect, so just about anything goes if you’re doing it for a legit, defendable reason.
Deffinitly the black panther(er is it jaguar?), It does the most burst damage from what I’ve seen, I’ve even had it hit for a little above 9k with the help of utility skills and its F2 ability. It’s F2 ability makes it go invisible WHILE doing massive strikes on the enemy, absolutely great for ambushes!
On a side note, if you can get all lightning strikes to hit, the drake that shoots lightning from its mouth can also do some heavy burst.
Birds do more bursty damage than cats and give slightly more utility (AoE swiftness), are harder to really “find” due to their big swoopy animations, and are the most reliable pets for hitting while moving, but they take a minor DPS hit because of it.
Cats do more DPS than any other pet but have a hard time hitting moving targets(unless they’re CCed), are squishy like birds, and lack utility.
Both of those would be good choices if you plan on maximizing damage, if you want a little more survivability though you could also take a spider or canine for the CC, and if you’re primarily Melee a Moa would also be a very good option due to the 3.5k heal it has + it’s damage really isn’t all that bad and it’ll have a boon or daze to help you kill the enemy.
If you feel like your damage doesn’t need anymore help you could always take a pig for the adaptability they bring (forge items) which can normally throw off enemies and the ludicrous knockdown they have (it’s an obvious charge up for a reason, or even a bear for the F2 + the ability to use them very easily as a shield of meat (my friends can vouch for how annoying it is, so many intercepts by Beary…)
Devourers are also fairly solid for ranged damage + tankyness but imo I’d rather bring a cat or bird since they off about the same utility but deal more damage. Additionally drakes are ALSO tanky damage dealers, but are REALLY easy to avoid just by moving around, and despite having really good damaging moves and being the only pet (minus F2s and the pig charge) to be able to cleave, they can be easily avoided just by moving around.
Just my 2 cents! Happy hunting fellow ranger!
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
Thanks for the replies and suggestions all! Happy killing!
i found if you , your self deals in burst damage , a cat would be more useful to balance it for consistant damage but using a cat would need some kind of movement impairing effects to help it hit.
while if your own damage is consistant like lots of small lots , a bird might be more useful to keep the damage up with no 1sec down times between you and your pets bursts.
cats=need movement impairing effects or 50% speed .
birds= your personal damage would be better if it was consistant and let the bird burst, at the time it bursts support it with a dagger throw or torch throw to keep the damage going till it bursts again.
I would suggest birds over cats, simply because they don’t have an issue with hitting the target. Even if a cat does more damage per attack, if it’s not hitting all it’s attacks or not attacking as frequently, it’s not more dps then is it.. =p
It is not what you do, but how and why you do it that counts.
the black cat (with stealth) is my go-to dps pet, birds are more bursty while cats are constant damage,
also i dont like birds because of the swiftness skill they’ll cast before joining the fight.
“just attack them already!”
