Bird pets
You mean so they don’t have to make a 2 mile detour because you went over a 2ft ledge, or so they can attack people on top of tower walls?
Either way this idea gets my vote.

Yup, jumping down a steep hill and having your bird just fly around and rejoin you when you have practically already lost a fight is very aggrivating. It would make them alot more useful in WvW if they could fly up to keep walls to attack your target.
I play as an Asura, my kitten bird should be able to carry me, or at least slow my decent when I jump off a cliff.

Sometimes my pet pops right next to me, I think it happens when i click “guard here” and then f3 regardless of where he is. And if he’s not with me i just swap twice and then he’s there.
Now in terms of vertical movement it would indeed be cool if you could send your bird up a Fort wall to harass people!
Yeah, it might be cool… but a hell to balance.

Why? Ele’s can do aoe damage to people and siege on walls that are out of sight, our pets would be doing single target damage. Pets are also supposed to make up something like 30% of our damage, I’d argue that it would make up for the damage handicap of having a pet.

Anet should implement something called “Step size” into the pet code. Setting “Step size” for e.g. river drake to 1000 would allow it to walk up walls or over them.
This would allow pets like spiders to act like spiders and birds will “walk” over small walls.
Yeah, it might be cool… but a hell to balance.

Pet A can fly. Pet B can not. So, how much worse stats do you put on pet A to make their total value equal?
I’d rather keep my bird as it is, thank you.

Birds are very squishy and I wouldnt be surprised if a warrior can 1hit it with 100blades so I dont think itd be to much of an issue.

Very few people even use birds so such an attribute would give alot more people a reason to take a bird over a bear or wolf.
Birds have the same stats as cats do. Cats don’t fly. Do you really want to continue?

You act like such an improvement would be an astronomically large buff. However with the current leash range it wouldnt change much.

Let some of the other pets climb the walls. Spiders, lizards, even cats would make sense.

Idk about csts climbing walls but they can jump pretty kitten high.
I’m sure some people will complain it doesn’t make sense, but in a world full of giant cat people calling down meteor storms I am willing to accept animals can scale walls.

Let’s use the numbers Jim Hunter suggested earlier for simplicity’s sake. If a ranger with a bow is assaulting a tower in WvW, and is shooting, he deals 70% of his potential damage if the pet doesn’t reach. If the ranger would use a bird, he’d do 100% of his potential damage. A warrior with a hammer would do 0% of his potential damage, for comparison’s sake. I find those to be pretty major differences. So, what would justify the bird to have such an improvement over the cats?
People will always complain about our pets and im still to encounter the infamous brown bear that two hits people.
I feel like cats need a speed buff or something because in spvp my jaguar rarely hits people and srsly who can outrun a kittening jaguar?
But thats a different matter.
Im pretty sure its more beneficial to take a cat over a bird in a signet build because attack of opportunity only affects one hit.

Warriors have access to bows and rifles. if they don’t want to use their range attacks that is their decision. However if they are using a ranged weapon they are dealing 100% of their damage.

So, you seriously claim that a warrior can deliver 100% of his potential damage when using a bow or a rifle? You’re a funny guy.

I don’t understand what you are asking. If you are trying to say a warrior can do more damage through melee than ranged, well yeah, of course. That goes for any class, but have you ever tried running a crit rifle build? You easily do more damage than a ranger longbow.
LGN
That’s no more funny than saying a Ranger with a bow and active pet is dealing 100% of his potential damage. I hardly see a difference

A warrior can’t get a full 100% of his potential damage on a target on a wall. But that’s besides the point.
My point is that if the pet makes up 30% of the potential damage of the ranger, then in a situation where the ranger can attack normally, pet A can attack normally, but pet B cannot attack due to the target being out of reach, pet A gives ~43% more overall damage compared to when using pet B. Unlike the user with the name Troll implied, it would change much concerning the balance. +43% is huge.
That’s why we are saying just let the other pets climb the walls. Even if they don’t want to do it for towers they should at least do it for regular terrain. It’s ridiculous that all someone has to do to escape our pet is to go up or down a slight incline.

Jim cats do more damage than birds
Not really sure what that has to do with this conversation but since you brought it up what are you basing this on? Is it tests against golems or against moving people?
LGN
Sorry for being vague, I’ve tested it on golems because I use sword and can maintain cripple pretty constantly (I should people test though). I brought it up because some pets need a niche and this idea sounds interesting.
It’s not as simple as you might think, they’d practically have to rewrite the whole pathing… Combine that to the fact it would upset the current balance of the pets, I don’t see this happening in this game.

Oh okay that makes sense. I tried running cats but birds just seemed to stick to the players a lot better and land their hits more often. Plus I like the blind attack.

They should rewrite it, along with a ton of other things in this game. And there isn’t any balance to pets at the moment anyway. When is the last time you saw someone running around with a white moa? Some pets are clearly superior to others. Having pets not spend 20 minutes running around every bump in the road isn’t going to change that.

Don’t try to balance Ranger’s around a Warrior, please. God forbid another profession has access to something a Warrior does not. “BUT I WANT TO HIT PEOPLE ON THE WALLS, TOO.”

I actually love using birds. I go Wolf and Raven personally and although yes they’re extremely squishy, it feels like birds are much more accurate with their targets. Like instead of attacking, missing, pausing, repositioning, attacking like most pets do when someone moves out of their hitbox, birds attack, reposition, attack. Not to mention most people seem to forget they’re there.

That’s been my experience too. Everyone keeps saying cats are better but my bird seems to hit at least twice as often.

How hard is it to stay on the topic and not stick to one sentence brought in to broaden the view… it’s not a case of “rangers shouldn’t get this because warriors don’t!”, it’s a case of countering the potential outcry “we don’t want to lose a chunk of our damage when attacking people on walls!”. I chose to refer to warrior, because I figured that’s what most of people are familiar with, regardless of whether or not they play one themselves. Hint, I don’t play a warrior, nor do I want to.
Besides, if hitting people on walls is what you want, you already have pets with ranged attacks. No need to mess with AI scripting, pathing, and every single bump on the game for that. It would be an element with a very situational value with no way of setting a number on, nor any equivalents on other professions, therefore, a hell to balance.
I tried to equip a spider to help down players on the wall but their range is crap. You usually have to find the right angle, or stand on a specific bump to hit things with a bow and unfortunately the pets aren’t smart enough for that.
And giving pets the ability to climb wouldn’t be situational, it would fix a lot of their problems since the terrain in this game is full of ledges. Pets need work, having the f2 ability only screw up 50% of the time instead of all the time doesn’t mean they are done fixing them.

Just use a tweaked version of underwater pathing.
