Bow should not be Mandatory
Carrion Survival doesn’t run any bows.
It isn’t mandatory. Another option is to use the same weapons as the post above but try traps. It isn’t going to work if you play in really high end play, but it a lot of fun anywhere else.
You can succeed running full melee power ranger and just win all your 1 v 1s. That would make you viable. It’s not easy, but bows are by no means mandatory imo.
Am I good?… I’m good.
Same as healing should not be mandatory for Druid, sad but true.
like the first 2 guys on top said, it is not mandatory just most people pref bow for the range and crits.
Carrion Survival doesn’t run any bows.
The issue is that condi ranger builds just aren’t competitive against good players who know what they are doing. So I wouldn’t use that as an example. Can you get away with it? Yes, at low end pvp, against high end pvpers? it would get eaten alive. While Power Ranger still struggles, it is the most viable option available to rangers by a long shot.

Power Ranger isn’t viable in high end PvP either so your point is moot. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind seeing GS getting a damage buff on auto, or sword becoming a little less clunky, but it’s not our weapon skills that are keeping us out of the meta.

I meant that it is the most viable build we have compared to any other build, and it isn’t close.

Bows are not mandatory and the fact you don’t see Ranger in high tier mean nothing as to how viable it is. Most players that compete at a high level started with that intention. Ranger have been close to the bottom in terms of power for along time.
This means that most player who desired to compete mostly skipped of the ranger in favor of easier classes.
Most rangers don’t use the 1sword to start with and once they decide to play compete
Most haven’t develop the skill to use the sword. To use the sword you have to be very aggressive. This is contrary to how most rangers play ranger.
everyone should fear becoming mentally clouded and obsessed with one small section of truth.

The problem with the sword is if you are using it to attack outside of a 1v1 it is pretty much a death sentence, you can evade around like a spider monkey on crack but you aren’t keeping pressure on them since you can’t strafe around and attack without gluing yourself to the target, or leaping off point if no one is targeted. Unlike the GS it has no burst damage, and it provides a lot less utility. Sword is fine for dueling but it’s not great for fighting in PvP.
Power ranger is viable at top end PvP Puck.9612. More so now than it ever has been.

You don’t strafe you kill and you kill quickly don’t try to run away. Even in a 1v3 situation you should be able to put down(kill) your target. You will die but you should have score at least one kill (sword has cleave possible to down two if not all three) and delayed the other two aleast 15 to 30 second enabling your team to have the advantage on the other two points.
Stay alive for the sake of stay alive doesn’t help your team. Seen ranger spend to much time running and not doing anything. 8 time out of 10 running in the 1 v3 situation usually mean they take the point uncontested (1 stays behind and cap) you still die (two chase you) but without fighting back and they are closer now to the next point.
Creating a situation that puts your teammate on the next point at a disadvantage.
With Path of scar, rapid fire, point blank shot, quickening zephyr and k9 kds and wolf fear you have the tools you need to do what you need. Sword with quickness is no joke. Don’t be afraid to die and don’t die needlessly.
You won’t improve if you always play it safe. Yes, there is risk to using 1h sword but the pay off can be huge.

So you yolo in to down 1 before dying… I’ve gone 1v3 on point, strafing around cleaving, using GS block, SoS, my pets to body block and cc, dazing and evading for so long that 2 of them ended up rotating off since they lost the other 2 points and then I killed the 3rd. Usually I will die to a 1v3 but I’ll still last a hell of a lot longer than 15-30 sec.
Like I said, sword is good 1v1, hell I’d say full melee ranger is 1 of the strongest 1v1 builds, it just loses effectiveness in team fights.

Viable in the sense that you can win fights or that there is a reason to bring it over the other professions?
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely prefer power to condi, but without boon stripping or teleports I don’t see a real advantage to running a ranger against an organized team in PvP.
Its a jack of all trades that can fill a role as needed as the game goes on. Right now it can 1 v 1 pretty well, it can +1, it can “troll” far pretty well, and it can kinda hold node when it needs to. + Unlike some other professions the team fight presence of a ranger is definitely felt.

And yet an ele will do pretty much all of that better. That’s the problem, it’s not that rangers are bad, it’s just they don’t have a real spot at the moment.
Edit: I’m fairly certain I’ve seen you say pretty much the same thing recently.
RANGEr.
Need better ways to contribute to/benefit from groups while playing at range. If I wanted to play double melee I would just play warrior.
Please someone post what the definition of ranger is so I can laugh at trolling you

Aye, difference between Eles and Rangers is easy to see in PvP. You could have 4 of your team on point, but once a single enemy d/d cele rides in you know you’re in for a world of heavy CC and sustained damage on top of their mobility, keeping you all busy while the other team caps points. NOT TO MENTION THEIR GODkitten "LOL GG CONDI RANGERS GL TRYING TO CONDI BURST ME WHILE I’M ABOVE 90% HP, WHICH IS LIKE, FOREVER.

This is why ranger don’t have a place, too many of us want to fight only at range. You not only don’t benefit you team but your not getting benefits from your team either.
When fighting at range your pet is either not in the action or takes a while from him to get there. You are not giving your team spotter or regen or anything at all even if you had access to all the traits and skill of every other profession.
Get off your perch and get into the fight. There is no point in downing a target and not finishing him. The range on long bow is an advantage but if you don’t use it right its not only a disadvantage to you but your whole team.
Use the range to make them use their dodge.
To soften them up
To keep out of harms way when the point is covered in aoe.
But you have to get in their to finish your target or quickness stealth res you teammate.
Be close enough that your point blank shot and your wolfs fear allow you to dps and down the player that was going to stomp your team mate or allow you enough time to res your team member.
Image if any other class try to do what some of you guys do. Guardian and ele using staff and attacking from max range. Thieves and Mesmer attacking from make range. Warriors using long bow and rifle only. All these classes would be sitting right where rangers are today.
Rangers have some problem but a lot of the bigger problem comes from how we are perceived and we the ranger core have contributed to those perception. By what we do and don’t do, more than anything rangers are unable to do.

Neither LongBow or ShortBow should not be Mandatory for PvP imo.
I would like a balance option of weapons in SPvP.
Currently, the Bows beat out every weapon in SPvP for Ranger options.
My Condi build (which is borderline broken OP) never has and never will use bows. S/Wh A/D beats bows.

Apparently it worked anyway lol.
- There are good double melee builds that don’t use bows.
- There are good condition builds that don’t use bows.
- Staff is also looking very viable without a bow.
- Shortbow is far from viable enough, no idea why you even mention it.

Just curious, why A/D over SB? Sure you can might stack with pet and have a chill, but axe attacks slow and doesn’t hit hard anyway..and stalker’s is currently kitten so you have to be super close to use it anyway.

A/D for fighting on point with pet with low precision build. Stalkers strike keeps you in fire field, close to pet, and on point. You can punish unfortunates who try to chase you off point with split blade and winters bite. I’m not saying SB is bad, but it doesn’t have much synergy with pet (the life of a ranger). And doesn’t seem to do much with low precision (Carrion or Settlers amulet).

Shortbow mandatory? More like one of the worst weapons in the entire game.
I feel you about longbow though
I am not sure that LB is mandatory. I rarely use it. I can’t get past the dissonance caused by being too far from the pet and allies half the time. Allies Aid and most of our other useful skills have really short range radii. We sacrifice so much to be at range that I don’t think it is worth it.

Even if you had to bring a bow to be competitive (you don’t, but for the sake of argument), so what? Necromancers have to bring a staff, thieves have to take a shortbow. There are more pressing issues afflicting the ranger profession than this.

I see. I may have to give that combination a try again. I mainly run SB + A/T despite a lot of people disliking the SB. S/W does sound like an interesting combination though.

I really do like the feel of SB + A/T, so I can see why you run it. If you use S/W and A/T you can start by dropping bonfire→splitblade→weapon swap→warhorn to get your pet to 12 stacks of might. A few other things and you can have your little beastie at 25 in no time.

Oh ya that makes sense, my bad :P
It’s not mandatory. Don’t use it. I know people are stuck on the idea of meta and do what everyone else is doing and you know.. whatever. At times that works but sometimes you just need to be a more fun and creative player. Play a different class or make other weapon options work.
