Buff the freaking GS already..
The only thing I want changed on the great sword is for maul to be a blast finisher. Im running a 0/0/10/30/30 with clerics and fighter runes. In pvp. I’m not the best nor is the build the best but the great sword has saved my kitten countless times allowing me to disrupt run away or last long enough till help comes. If I wanted a more offensive great sword I’d play a warrior or guard. It paired with the long bow 2 shouts and some good healing power is a nice mix of defense and offense. I think the great swords kit as many others think, is for a defensive play style which in turn lets you dish out more dmg with your pet. Yes sword dagger is prob better but the condition dmg feels wasted. I prefer sword dagger paired with short bow. If you want a more offensive great sword the you are looking at the wrong class. Play a warrior maybe.
You don’t want it buffed offensively, but you want a blast finisher.
.. what?
Most rangers are not fine with GS which is why youll hardly ever see a power focused GS ranger. The other options for melee is SWORD and DAGGER which is I use on swap oh and Axe offhand if you like standing in place while being obvious.. You are not forced to post here either but you just enjoy polite trolling me. Very big pro you are plz teach classes or something. I have a warrior and a necro but AS I SAID BEFORE I play ranger because its the ONLY class that can use GS and wear medium armor. Whats wrong with you? are you a gs ranger? yes? how could you not want a buff? No? mad spirit ranger? f off.
I use Greatsword and Axe/Axe and I do just fine. Maul hits for 3k-9k depending on the class / how glassy they are. Matter of fact here’s my build with a video of the pre-revamped build (working on a new video once I can actually have time to play):

If you’re complaining about the vulnerability stacks that maul provides as a power ranger you clearly don’t know what vulnerability does to someone who has it on them.

Sorry I should of been clear. I see the blast finisher being helpful in terms of defense also. It can pop water fields and such. I also never said it shouldn’t be more offensive but if I wanted something more offensive I’d play a warrior or guard. As it stands its a Defensive weapon and what’s how I use it majority of the time. Also all except area might seem fairly defensive to me. Maybe I’m wrong. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Blast_finisher

Someone may need to explain to me why Maul being a blast finisher would be overpowered. Compare it to the Guardian Hammer #2. Same 5 second cooldown with better damage on a full 360 AOE and short gap-closer.
If you would say Maul has too much synergy with Healing Spring, I would answer Mighty Blow has just as much synergy with the light-field created on the third strike of Guardian Hammer’s auto chain.
Why the disparity? Both are defensive AOE weapons. Ranger Greatsword evades on auto, Guardian hammer does aoe protection on auto. Ranger Greatsword blocks, Guardian Hammer does a circle wall. Ranger Greatsword interrupts, Gaurdian Hammer Banishes. Why then is a 5 second blast finisher fine for one and not the other I wonder?

This. It would be nice to have the auto dmg buffed a bit too, but maul needs this. Also, the vulnerability needs to be 10 stacks.

All a light combo field does, is add retaliation. Other then that, the Guardian has two fire fields with long recharge times.
The Ranger has a water field with Healing Spring, that lasts 15 seconds. A fire field every 15 second with Fire Trap, and every 25 second with Bonfire. An ice field with Ice Trap every 30 second. And poison fields with various pets every 30 seconds. Basically, the Ranger has way too many useful combo fields to have a blast finisher with only a 6 second recharge time. And all of this isn’t even considering traits that reduce recharge times.
The point of combo skills is to make players work together with each other.

3 vuln being three percent more damage… but in dungeons (the only place this really matters) sword+axe/wh(depending on whether you need reflects) is better anyway

kitten … thats basically exactly what i wrote in the other thread but you went into more detail xD
… but i dont think the point of combos are meant to make people work together specifically… sure working together amplifies their usefulness (i love rangers who put healing spring under my hammer guardian… so so so much) but classes like ele and engi show that they are also designed to be taken advantage of in solo play

Great minds think alike :P
Teamwork is, or at least was, the idea behind combos. The trailers also show this, when the Elementalist lays down a fire field, and the Ranger shoots through it. It’s really just that most players are too lazy to take advantage of it, as it’s just that; an advantage. You can play just as fine without using combos, so that’s what players do. Choice is really a big problem with a lot of things in Guild Wars 2. ArenaNet gave us players too much freedom, so most don’t bother to do anything more then what they have to, or anything ells beyond what gives themselves an advantage. Combos are a good example of this. Another one is only fighting bosses that drops rares, instead of exploring the world and play the dynamic quests. But I’m getting off topic now.
All professions have a way of triggering combo fields on their own, even the Ranger. The reason why the Elementalist and Engineer has more, is simply because they were made to be the “advanced” professions. So they get more options, but with the downside of being more complicated to play, at first.

Huge problem with adding maul as a blast finisher before doing anything else to help the flow/dps of the weapon is that it will fail to make the weapon more of a threat in all modes of play, which is what it needs. Nobody is inherently afraid to engage a GS ranger for any reason; adding a blast finisher will not change that. Inherent skill function and animation flow between skills needs to be improved before they can think of doing anything else. The sad thing is that these attributes are still in a terrible state (save for Swoop, bless its lovely pathing) after TWO QoL buffs to the weapon.

compared to sword it is a defensive weapon
lower dps auto attack with a built in evade
block
control (hilt bash)
the only thing defensive about sword is the poison evade (i wouldnt count hornets sting because of the annoying period where your character stands still and throws bees in their face, which leaves you very open)

Comparing 5 abilities to 3 is hardly the same. You have an offhand with a sword…take your pick..want to be defensive go dagger or axe.
Im sorry but theres simply no love for this weapon. Every other GS weapon for other classes are awesome, many people use the GS as their main like guardian, war or mes. They all have powerful skills. We have swoop and maul as our best and they really arent that spectacular. Id much rather spawn some dude thats gonna fight for me and do INSANE damage, Id much rather do 100b that hits for 3 times the dmg of maul, and Id much rather spin around in huge AOE immbolizing my enemies. but no, I have to land mauls, mauls that take a good about of time to hit the ground and give me vuln. Nice vuln there hmm what do I follow that up with? Oh some weak gs 1 chain? Some weak swoop? Some non-existant dmg super short-range hilt bash? I guess ill stop for a second before I throw my sword at them. When I switch to gs they chain all the moves in 4 seconds and then for the next 6 I am are slowly swinging around doing pitful 400 dmgs and lucky to get some evades in while my opponent is enjoying the nice breeze I am providing.
1) You dont have to stop to throw your sword. They changed that last patch
2) GS has an evade every 3 hits, a knockback, 2 interrupts, and a block.
3) Provides opening strike to your pet. You can say OMG PET AI SUCKS, really, thats on you. You have the traits to increase its speed, abilities to do the same, and a plethora of abilities to slow enemies down to provide your pet the support it needs. You can control it as well.
4) “I use all the moves in 4 seconds” Youre doing it wrong. #5 is a counter, as is #4. You need to utilize them well with your endurance, lightning reflex timers to optimize this. in those 4s, youre never dodging or using other skills? Do you just lay your face across 12345 and hope for the best? This class is about finesse and timing. I can direct you to the warrior forums, if youd rather do that.
this is why i love ranger GS, its skill set is better than warrior and pala-, i mean guardian, IMO of course.

Except it’s not. You’d be hard pressed to come up with a GS build that outshines anything else in the offense department. The weapon lacks basic skill flow/damage to make itself threatening even when specced for power. The animations are too slow and obvious with not enough pay out. Telegraphing is good, but the GS has very little you actually need to watch out for.
Power weapons, in general, need some buffs when it comes to ranger. Outside of the sword, I feel as though they balanced our damage coefficients way too dependent on our pet, who in pve or elsewhere, may be oneshot and left out of the equation for the rest of a fight.
Greatsword may still need a coefficient buff and a shortening on the precast of maul.
Personally I think the autoattack chain needs a slight damage boost, and Maul needs both a damage boost AND a blast finisher.
Fact: Engineer Bomb AUTOATTACK is better than Maul in every way!
I’d like to write my opinion here too.
I’m relatively new to ranger, I’ve played it here and there since launch, without really going into it.
Recently, with the archievement patch, I’ve started leveling up a ranger and using it in PvP and, to be honest, I’m having a lot of fun with.
I think that GS has an Amazing skillset. It really has everything you need to face off every situation.
The autoattack is fairly defensive, allowing to autoattacking without worrying that much.
Maul has good damage, not too high of course, but it is compensated by the fast casting time and low cooldown.
Swoop is Amazing. I think none can argue about that skill.
Counterattack is a great skill. It is pretty much a 3s block on low cooldown if you want or a nice knockback. Another great skill.
Hily Bash is the icing on the cake. CC on a low cooldown.
Really, the fact that this weapon does not have an insane damage output doesn’t mean it is bad.
I’d rather go with ranger GS over warrior’s one any day. Better have an all-around weapon at the cost of some damage than an all-damage-focused weapon.
If they add a blast finish on Maul, I don’t mind. If they also nerf our water field to balance it, I do mind. I will take the current water field over a blast finisher on Maul, if indeed that’s what the choice was and my hypothetical isn’t false. That’s my real opinion.
Personally I think the autoattack chain needs a slight damage boost, and Maul needs both a damage boost AND a blast finisher.

Adding a blast finisher will necessitate a rebalance for the entire weapon. Rangers have access to a larger variety of combo fields than other professions. The weapon needs QoL changes across the board in terms of smoothness/movement of execution with a few damage buffs.

If you think the dagger 4 is a loss of mobility then you obviously haven’t used it with offhand training.
It’s practically a gap closer and if used next to the enemy will not only give you the dodge but will also fling you all the way around to their flank in a fraction of a second.
It’s basically serpent’s but without all the stuff that makes that skill crummy.
I think GS is great. It’s probably my most used weapon in WvW.
I’d go as far as saying it’s maybe our most “complete” weapon at the moment.
IMO only Maul needs some tweaking. 3 stacks of vulnerability? Really?
Swap the vulnerability to few stacks of might, fury to pet, or some bleeds like it used to be.
2 seconds of stability would fit Maul well, because it’s so bear-like. But that would be pretty OP.
WvW Roaming with Mesmer
TBH. Maul just needs more damage. It’s adequate right now, but doesn’t really provide any zazz even in full zerker.
Though that might just be a symptom of ranger scaling.
Auto attack needs a slight damage buff--not much.
Maul would be far more interesting if it was a knockdown on critical only. Now consider ranger’s role compared to hammer warrior, using a canine pet with greatsword to lock down an enemy, leveraging traits that cause your next attack to automatically crit or give you fury. Sword remains the offensive weapon because of spammable cripple and poison, but gsword would truly become the control weapon that ranger needs to synergize with moment of clarity. The animation is perfect for the knockdown too.
Warrior can build for it. Thief can build for it. Ranger has less healing than either class in a berserker build, so why can’t ranger build to spam control effects too?

im not saying sword/x is bad
im arguing GS is more defensive than sword/x

Okay im back just wanted to say Im LB GS now and having a blast as a power ranger. Still would love to see some more from GS. Maul Blast finisher/KD ftw!
If they are doing PvE splits but sticking to numbers only, it would be great to see a DPS buff of the greatsword. It seems like we will never see the mainhand sword fixed and melee is king of DPS by design, so the burden falls on greatsword. A PvE only damage buff would be awesome.
GS is my weapon of choice in melee trains in WvW. If it only had something more, that’d make us interesting alternative for heavies… Blast finisher on maul? Some protection proc? Maybe condi removal? Or AoE hard CC? Anything!
Ranger’s one-handed sword has more mobility than greatsword. The leap is on an 8-second cooldown instead of 12 seconds, and the roll and the leap together are about the same distance covered.
Using one-handed sword for travel, a ranger can bind About Face to X and then use that key along with hornet sting and no currently selected target or mouse buttons down to quickly turn back, roll back (forward) and then turn again to leap in the same direction.
Hornet Sting / Monarch’s leap has a shorter cooldown, an evade and a cripple on hit. Swoop just looks cooler. I’ve used one-handed sword to chase down just about anything in WvW short of a sword/horn+greatsword warrior or one of those rocket boot engineers.
The only trouble with using one-handed sword for travel is that... well, frankly it’s super-annoying to hit that button combo over and over.

- again from a wvw perspective -
using hornets sting is very risky (when using it in a zerg or to run away) because it roots you in place for a split second before the roll (leaving you open to being hit with an immob, fear, cripple, steal… w/e)
