The proposed Patch Notes for Ranger’s divided into three category’s:

Buffs

  • Soften the Fall: Maximum targets increased from 3 to 5.
  • Maul: Damage for this skill has been increased by 15%. Vulnerability has been increased from 3 to 5 stacks and the duration increased from 6 to 8 seconds.
  • Muddy Terrain: The maximum number of targets for this skill has been increased to 5, from 3.
  • “Sic ’Em”: This shout now applies 4 seconds of “Revealed” on the targeted enemy.

Nerfs

  • Healing Spring: Reduces the field duration to 10 seconds. It now pulses every 2 seconds instead of 3 so it will still provide the same amount of regeneration and condition removal, just in a more condense time frame.
  • Vigorous Renewal: This trait now grants vigor to the ranger and nearby allies when the healing spring skill is cast and not every pulse.

Bug Fixes(Some can be considered nerfs)

  • Nature’s Voice: This trait no longer carries the effects of Evasive Purity as well as the on-shout swiftness and regeneration.
  • Companion’s Defense: Protection now occurs at the end of the ranger’s dodge-roll, instead of the beginning.
  • Spike Trap: This skill’s tooltip now appropriately displays when Trapper’s Expertise is equipped. Updated the skill tooltips to include the immobilize condition that occurs.
  • Rending Pounce (Jaguar): This skills tooltip now displays the correct amount of bleeding applied.
  • Protect Me: This skill no longer prevents capture point progress.

I think Mr Sharp stated that there will be much more changes to ranger. For excample Pet health buff, Sic’ em reveals stealt and # of changes to ranger weapons. Lets just see what happens

As it is right now, with what we know, yes its sub par. The only saving grace is that we don’t know exactly what the “other” changes are, yet.

Minor tweaks wont fix the glaring issues with pets. The 70% hp increase will help in the most minute way….instead of a 2shot killing the pet, it will take 3. Whoop dee freekin doo.

If the unknown changes are like the ones we already know are coming (minor tweaks here and there), prepare to be in the same boat you are in now. Until they make pet mechanic useful (as it is what defines this class), little changes to weapon skills wont do diddly. I doubt Anet has the know-how and/or willingness to change the pet mechanic.

well it looks like rangers are getting 1 nerf. The other is a wash as you’ve mentioned. It’s not super exciting from what is listed, but I can think of much worse things.

Seriously, you’re already complaining and you haven’t even seen the actual patch notes yet. If you’re basing it on the leak, then it’s severely lacking. J.Sharp mentioned a very vague “There will also be # changes to some of the Ranger weapons.” that isn’t mentioned in those leaks.

inb4 those changes will be nerfs.

Yes! Logged just to reply to this. My thoughts exactly on the mesmer bit, makes perfect sense. The pet’s AI is just too lackluster and needs improvement more than anything else.

Because that helps in only one area PVE, it won’t be affected by WVW (if it is the crying will be ridiculous) and second of all it doesn’t address the core issue, AI. They need to fix the pet AI , the F2 functionality before they start buffing pet hp , it’s so silly to me that pets still don’t have a dodge option or atleast aegis when we dodge or something to compensate for that. It’s going to help alot in PVE so that’s excellent and great, but in terms of ranger usefulness in wvw i dont think it’ll even see the HP buff.

It’s a shame, but if there is anything substantial, it’ll be cried about and again, like every other build we’ve had be nerfed into the ground. I’m surprised the fire trap hasn’t had it’s cooldown increased, I mean I’m really surprised on that one.

The dodge roll protection is better at the end and probably wasted during since you are avoiding damage while dodging.

Having the dodge roll protection applied at the beginning means your pet gains protection immediately. I thought that was the main point of the trait. Pets can’t dodge, so they threw us this bone to all us to give our pets protection. If there’s a big AOE attack, you can dodge it and the pet will gain protection to help survive it.

If you apply the protection at the end, lots of people here will complain that it doesn’t help your pet. (Ideally the pet would gain the protection immediately while the ranger got it at the end of the dodge roll.)

Not sure how healing spring is getting a buff, it was only used in teams for a water field, the condition removal was already handled by guardians etc. I’m not quite sure anybody in there right mind would consider dropping the duration of the water field from15 to 10 a buff. Now with 5 seconds off of it, it hurts team comp blasting into it and the cooldown of he heal is the same. Please do realize that the ONLY reason why that thing is being put down is to create a water field, the condition removal is just an added effect. Regen is also another boon handled by many other classes and in effect, is an added effect.

Why else would you run healing spring other than in a team comp? It has a horrible heal unless you spec full healing and in PVE you’re not and if you’re doing 1on1s troll is amazingly better. It’s a team heal all the way, therefore it IS a nerf.

It’s actually a buff. Now, on top of being the longest and most sustainable water field in the game, it also has a higher rate of condition removal and regen application. Now, it benefits the ranger more, and makes empathic bond less of a necessity to deal with conditions.

So, it’s still the best water field, AND it functions better. It’s going to be more beneficial to people who don’t group up and roam around with access to blast finishers, it’s more beneficial to people who don’t want to trait empathic bond for condi removal, and it’s more beneficial for pvp in every role that the ranger has played since launch right up until this very moment.

Overall, the skill actually has MORE viable uses than being just a water field to drop for people to blast finish in, which results in it being an overall buff, even though it suffered a duration reduction. And even then, it is still the longest lasting water field in the game with the highest uptime percentage.

Lets see wether it is really that bad.
if you manage to stay in for the new 10 sec, you will have ~7000 healing.
+ most ranger builds can perform at least 2 finishers (leap and/or blast) in it.
Against melee enemies you can potentially go up to 5! finishers (2 drakes + sword/horn + GS)
makes ~9600 healing with 2 finishers and ~13500 with 5 finishers.
So with the right build it can be an awesome heal.
Not to mention the improved condi removal!

maul is a necesery buf. dodge prot is a bug patch other updates are nerf or useless changes. pet hp buff is a joke. if i know pets will be this useless i choose warrior at the -3 day, but now i invested too much in ranger. i like the feeling of my sylvari ranger but im useless in any team.

The change to maul is pretty good, if they add the fact that stun adds 50% more damage to after hilt bash it would be better. My pet always misses unless it’s a zerg.

I wonder how this is going to work out:

Because how can you target what you do not see?

I was looking forward to the revealed debuff on sic-em, but 4 secs seems to be quite low. Also, the debuff will only apply onto the target- so the thief has to be out of stealth for you to use it.

I’m just not sure how it will play out; on the plus side it might make timing when to sic-em a very skill based play, or it could just end up being virtually useless. What do you think?

My concern with the Maul change and Greatsword in particular is once you’ve burned the cooldowns, the greatsword is a terrible weapon. It does amazing burst with the swoop+hilt+maul combo, but if the target is still alive you’re stuck. The maul change is welcome, but I’d have preferred a cooldown reduction as opposed to a damage increase I think.

The ranger could really use a weapon swap cooldown trait and/or a DPS increase on the greatswords #1.

Welcome change. It might finally be buffed compared to the bleed it had.

lol, “targetted enemy”. It’s anti-stealth, but it needs a target to work. Exactly as I expected: rubbish in most stealth situations. Only 4 seconds too, so no thanks.

Sweet, nice fix. 0.75s of protection no longer wasted.

This on top of the rumoured pet health increase might make it a good patch. That’s 3 buffs in my book.

I’m just going to completely ignore the sic ‘em “buff” like it didn’t happen. Also, the max targets from 3 to 5 should be in the “fix” category, not the “buff” category.

Scenario: Stealthing burst Thief has just bursted and is about to waste initiative on the stealth I just prevented with my reveal; theif dies because he’s defenseless without stealth, has no initiative, and needs to stealth to do everything basically.

Can’t say its rubbish, but I am unsure if 4 secs of stealth debuff every 40 secs will make a difference. The timing of sic’em will be critical, but I’m not sure if the payoff will reward the skill required to use it effectively. It will be interesting to see how it plays out though.

Still don’t like the new healing spring. Personally, I tend to use it either when movement pretty much doesn’t matter (2s/3s pulse or 10s/15s isn’t a problem) or as a combo field to blast/leap in. In that second case, the spring pop is an instant heal with boons, in which i may blast or leap out of, and fight around so i can leap back into it when needed. My experience is that i often find myself getting that ‘last second’ leap for an extra heal.

My feeling is that it’s being taken down to drag everything closer to the instant/short duration effects the game seems to be focused on (4s reveal eh?). Muddy Terrain already paid that price, now the Healing Spring gets it.

Looking forward to the bears buffs though. With more HP and a better F2 that brown bear may become a handy condition cure option by itself, and a mighty one when tooled up with trait/signet.

Nope
I want real changes to ranger weapons making each of them more unique.
I dont’t know… a real AOE set, condi set, damage set and CC set.
For the moment we have :
- LB : damage/CC/AOE > could be more AOE focus
- SB : condi/CC/AOE?
- GS : damage/CC/Def
- S : damage/condi/Soft CC
- D : condi/Soft CC > could be full Soft CC
- T : condi > ok
- W : buff/damage > could be full buff
- A mh : condi/Soft CC/AOE?
- A oh : damage/CC

Well that a good reflect of the ranger class ^^ We can do everything but we can hardly be master in something.

No rubbish

- it’s only 4 seconds. I’m sure any thief can stay alive for 4 seconds without stealth or start using slightly bigger margins while fighting rangers with sic ‘em.
- it requires a target, eventhough stealth prevents targetting, so the skill can’t take anything out of stealth. It can only prevent stealth from being used for the next 4 seconds.
- it’s single-target, so it’s no use against group stealth.
- it takes up a utility slot, and the current skill has little use other than in BM builds.
- it’s only useful against 1 class and that only in a very limited timeframe.

So pretty rubbish. The biggest issue is it requiring a target and it being single-target. 4 seconds might be good if it could kick stuff out of stealth.

By the way, your scenario is the only scenario in the game where the skill is useful. The scenario doesn’t even happen all that often and is very hard to time.

As for Healing Spring, I understand your reasoning on why you think its a buff, but I can guarantee you, it is in fact a nerf.

Missed those three OP

At first I was going to add this bit of info, but since its only PvE content, I didn’t think it mattered since I already have no issues with pet management as of now. Also, the health increase isn’t just Rangers pets, its across the board except for a select few-mesmer clones, I think.

I started this thread so i can lay out the proposed changes in such a way so that players can make an accurate observation on whether this next patch will be good or bad. It is in no way a cry-before-the-patch-even-gets-here-thread.

Honestly I’m more interested in the global changes this patch. Weren’t they changing it so that boons and conditions that stack duration only stack 5 times? What kind of effect is that going to have?

As for the ranger patches, maul will be where it should have been when they changed out the bleeding for vulnerability. I don’t think they can increase the damage on maul any more, but it’s still a pretty weak weapon, so I’m hoping for an increase to attack speed or damage on the auto attack. That and some QoL stuff. I’d really like to be able to use the other weapon skills without resetting the main attack chain.

I’m not sure about healing spring. If they dropped the cooldown to 20-25 seconds or upped the heal I’d be all for it because the heal is awful.

Also, remember that when they say they’re making a number of weapon skill changes, one is a number. We might get some good stuff though.

Stealthing allows thieves to do everything from clear conditions to a multitude of other abilities. You’re going to eat the steal and then they drop a healing seed spring and start leaping? Back to full health. After the steal, stealth is all they got (and initiative). For a thief, that 4 seconds is going to feel like an eternity when they’ve been used to popping in and out of stealth at will.

I didn’t realize that as a ranger you were only capable of playing in a team or not at all. Oh wait… right… there is other content in the game that isn’t controlled by people who are only worried about blast finishers and combo fields.

Why else would you run healing spring other than in a team comp? It has a horrible heal unless you spec full healing and in PVE you’re not and if you’re doing 1on1s troll is amazingly better. It’s a team heal all the way, therefore it IS a nerf.

Lets see wether it is really that bad.
if you manage to stay in for the new 10 sec, you will have ~7000 healing.
+ most ranger builds can perform at least 2 finishers (leap and/or blast) in it.
Against melee enemies you can potentially go up to 5! finishers (2 drakes + sword/horn + GS)
makes ~9600 healing with 2 finishers and ~13500 with 5 finishers.
So with the right build it can be an awesome heal.
Not to mention the improved condi removal!

This is why rangers are looked at as bad, they think of never existing scenarios and try to prove points with them.

When, and I mean when will a good player who knows a ranger is running healing spring STAY IN THE SPRING WITH YOU AND ALLOW THAT TO OCCUR? None.

Any enemy with AOE (mesmers, necros, thieves, OTHER RANGERS, ETC ETC) will simply place the AOE on top of that healing spring, completely nullifying it. It still baffles me that people think like this that they can just at free will be able to do leaps into it when people have interruption and not to mention with perplexity now.

I’ll give you a real life scenario , and it actually occurred earlier today on my thief. A Ranger I was dueling tried putting down healing spring and used the insanely telegraphed #2 leap into it , I interrupted him everytime EXCEPT when he had RaO up (how long does stability last again? Oh yea, very minimal against a stealthed player). I not only interrupted his heal, but I stacked 5 stacks of confusion on him as I run perplexity to troll people on one of my thief builds.

I really hate to break this to you, but in that little fantasy world where you think you can actually pull off combo finishers like what you explain against GOOD PLAYERS who are expecting it? It just DOESN’T happen. I’m sorry to burst your little bubble but you need to seriously wake up.

Like I said, this field is used only in groups where teammates can blast into it and you can blast into it. It got a nerf in this regard as the condition removal, like I said before is just an added bonus and is handled by other players more effectively.

Regular reveal is 3 seconds in pve/wvw and 4 seconds in spvp. If they leave the skill as is, we are getting 4 seconds of reveal on a 40 second cool down. This is hardly an eternity to anyone who knows how to play a Thief.

Ehhhh. Mostly it just seems like Healing Spring is going to inch a bit closer to the middle on the sliding spectrum between mobility and bunkering.

The proposed Patch Notes for Ranger’s divided into three category’s:

Changes

  • Soften the Fall: Maximum targets increased from 3 to 5.
  • Maul: Damage for this skill has been increased by 15%. Vulnerability has been increased from 3 to 5 stacks and the duration increased from 6 to 8 seconds.
  • Muddy Terrain: The maximum number of targets for this skill has been increased to 5, from 3.
  • “Sic ’Em”: This shout now applies 4 seconds of “Revealed” on the targeted enemy.
  • Healing Spring: Reduces the field duration to 10 seconds. It now pulses every 2 seconds instead of 3 so it will still provide the same amount of regeneration and condition removal, just in a more condense time frame.

Bug Fixes(Some can be considered nerfs)

  • Nature’s Voice: This trait no longer carries the effects of Evasive Purity as well as the on-shout swiftness and regeneration.
  • Companion’s Defense: Protection now occurs at the end of the ranger’s dodge-roll, instead of the beginning.
  • Spike Trap: This skill’s tooltip now appropriately displays when Trapper’s Expertise is equipped. Updated the skill tooltips to include the immobilize condition that occurs.
  • Rending Pounce (Jaguar): This skills tooltip now displays the correct amount of bleeding applied.
  • Protect Me: This skill no longer prevents capture point progress.
  • Vigorous Renewal: This trait now grants vigor to the ranger and nearby allies when the healing spring skill is cast and not every pulse.

Here, I fixed the OP to more accurately represent the list of leaked potential changes. To everybody reading, you’re welcome, and now you can make up your own minds, especially since healing spring is getting buffed.

As for Healing Spring, I understand your reasoning on why you think its a buff, but I can guarantee you, it is in fact a nerf.

The point is that those were some leaked notes that came out almost 2 months before the patch is even scheduled to launch. It is much, much too early to start making judgement calls on things that could have potentially not even been in their final state.

And, just like I’ve been mentioning throughout the thread, only the duration of the combo field was reduced for healing spring. Yes, that can be considered a nerf to the duration. But overall, the functionality is being vastly improved, particularly, the condition removal, which makes it less of a heal used only for the group support, because it’s functionality, specifically the condi removal, has a better chance of being competitive outside of being in a group.

So, I’m saying that because it helps just as many builds as it hurts, it’s a change, not just a blatant nerf. Overall though, Spring will still be the best combo field in the game, so that even with the nerf, rangers are the most competitive in-slot team comp option for bringing a water field, if basing the choice solely on the quality of the water field alone.

Again though, it’s too early to make that final judgement call, so really the only thing I’ve been trying to do is point out that there is more than one viewpoint on these things, so that by labeling them with bias (particularly in the OP), it creates a certain atmosphere in the thread (see people saying “look, another complaint thread already” etc etc etc).

Just need more information and a hands on experience before I can personally start categorizing changes made to the game as good or bad.

Would’ve much preferred a BLAST finisher, but at least a very meager scrap of a buff is better than a nerf.

Eh? It does this? To be honest I’ve never even noticed. Evasive purity is such a useless trait to begin with, maybe if it did something useful like break immob and cripple upon commanding a dodge (in order to help prevent getting immob locked to death), then I would take it in my actual trait makeup instead of more useable things.

It’s technically an invuln so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work just like every other invuln but this only matters for spvp, yet no rangers in spvp run protect me to begin with, so. What an odd thing to even take the time to consider changing in the first place when there other things that need fixing so much more.

Im aware that you will never can do this. It were just possibilities
But except of emathic bond and a 60s cd signet we dont have any viable condition cleanses and the changes to healing spring will help us even if you can only go for 2 finishers

And why is HS change a nerf? For me it’s huge buff. I never saw my allies stand in it for more than 5 sec, so why would I need 15? Not to mention when I throw it when we restack, and we have to move away to start stacking might, because HS stays too long lol.
After this change at least I’ll be able to use it better as condi removal.

All you have to do is stay in one spot in a WvW zerg fight and not get insta-gibbed, and you might get all that.
