Q:

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I tried with limited success to do Ascalonian Catacombs in story mode. My pet (jaguar+lynx) kept dying every 5 sec. It felt like the only way to keep it alive was to have it away from combat most of the time (spamming Pet #3).

Anyway, could you give me some advice regarding a build and a pet that would work well for dungeons?

It feels like survivability is a must. Right now I have Shortbow + Sword/Warhorn, although Sword seems a bit useless since my survival rate in melee is around 1-2 sec. Axe/Torch seems attractive for the combo effect + it’s a ranged weapon. To stay really safe, double bows (Shortbow + Longbow) might be a good option.

Any advice? Thanks.

If you die to much you can use dual immunity build, evasion and mass condition removal. Signet of Stone with Signet of the Beastmaster trait(30 points in marksmanship) will give both you and your pet 6 sec immunity to direct and aoe damage but not conditions. Protect Me with any bear at full health will give you additional 6 seconds immunity but use must be sure that your bear is at full health meaning that you must switch to it only when you are about to use Protect Me or to keep it constantly beside you in guard mode.
Signet of Renewal will remove 1 condition every 10 seconds with activated ability which will remove all conditions from you and all your allies if your pet is allive(all nearby allies).
5 points in Wilderness Survival will give you 50% faster endurance regeneration so you can dodge more.
Healing Spring is the best healing skill because it also removes conditions and there are lot of condition damage in dungeons and you can use it to heal your tanks. Primary job of every profession in dungeon is to try to keep it’s tanks(warrior or guardian) alive.
For pets you must have at least one bear for Protect Me and second one should be ranged pet because everything else will die very quickly while ranged pets have at least some chance of survival.
Lightning Reflexes is also very good dodging skill because it is free dodge and gives 10 seconds of Vigor(100% faster endurance Regeneration).
For Elite you can use either Rampage as One for 20 sec stability and swiftness or Spirit of Nature but it is very hard to know where to position it because it will be one-shooted but has very powerfull ability to mass ressurect group members and mass cure conditions.
For weapons use Longbow and Shortbow. Use Eagle Eye trait to increase longbow range to 1500 and try to stay at that max range(1500) because many bosses and mobs have less than 1500 range and many AoE will land in front of you without dealing any damage.
You can also use Vigorous Renewal trait to gain 5 sec Vigor everytime you heal yourself for more dodging. Also 5 points in beastmastery will give you 2 sec quickiness everytime you change your pet which will speed up revival of your allies.
Shortbow’s Quick Shot can be used for dodging also.
This is heavy defensive build but you can survive whith it even if you are low level with bad gear. All these skills have long cooldowns so you must use each one very wisely only when you really need them.

Best thing to do is first make sure you are level 80 and have at least “RARE” gear. The next thing is to look at your traits, I happen to be Mostly Marksman and Beastmastery with the rest in nature. Your results may vary but so far its working for me.

I go double bows.. but tend to stick to shortbow more. Don’t even bother trying to melee in a dungeon.. its a waste of time for a Ranger.

As for pets.. you need to use a bear, I suggest the Brown bear or Black bear. Your alternate pet should be the Lynx (or any cat). Swap between the two.

Remember, being level 80 and having at least Rares is critical here. Anything less and your just going to die a lot.

Good luck!

Pets die REALLY fast to dungeon monsters, there’s nothing you can really do about it. For that reason, I won’t bring anything other than my devourers into dungeons. They can attack from range and will tunnel underground if anything gets too close. That combined with their tough armor gives them a shot at actually surviving the fight to do damage…until they stand in a huge boss AoE and get one-shot.

Pet HP is your Profession Resource.
Right now, the management of it is a bit too easy in easy content and bit too hard in hard content. So we have some not-good things happening, like farming bots flocking to it and everybody and their brother running bear in dungeons. Because it’s not…quite…operating ideally, most what we can offer is just various coping strategies, and each one is ultimately affected by what we value in pets enough to try and preserve.

If you value the fact a pet is a source of damage over time, Devourers are good. If you value the fact a pet holds additional skills on the F2 key, Moas and Dogs are pretty popular for that, and you’ll focus more on swapping a pet asap to circumvent cooldowns than keeping your pet on the front lines. If you want your pet to do some distraction-tanking you can use a Bear, but you’ll need some build investment to pull it off even a little bit (at the very least signet of the wild, signet of stone and 15 beastmastery). Full Beastmaster Builds do exist, and are the only way I know of to keep a pet up against dungeon punishment, but it doesn’t really come into it’s own until you’ve got the traits and gear for it in late-game.

Brown Bear is one you’ll see alot because it’s kind of the defacto ‘Fire and Forget’ pet. It has less-than-horrible survivability even without build investment and the condition removal is kinda’ handy. It’s hard to recommend it because I don’t recommend firing and forgetting at all. Right now the cards are definitely not stacked in your favor, so you just can’t afford to let your guard down like that. Even if they do get around to making our resource more of a forgiving middle-ground, it’s never going to be so easy you can ignore it entirely in difficult content, so it’s a bad habit to cultivate regardless.

I personally run a trap build with Healing Spring, Flame Trap and Frost Trap.
They all generate combo fields with is good for your team.

I run 30/30/5/0/5 with Carrion gear. Why not 0/30/30/10? Because there are times when you can’t use traps well, end portion of Sorrow’s Embrace, or dangerous short-range foes. Running this build, you can swap out the traps traits and run a hybrid power/precision/malice build.

You DON’T need to be level 80 to do dungeons. That’s ridiculous. It does make it a little easier, but people seem to forget that explorable dungeons were being done before anyone was even level 80.
