Bunny Thumper - the hammer ranger
Not going to happen.
Besides, hammer is a heavy class weapon (just like greatsword) that wouldn’t feel right on a ranger. It’s already good CC on the Warrior. It’s fun to play on the Guardian. Why not roll one of those two?

Just leave, you know nothing of the legendary bunny thumpers!!

The key to the original thumper was the reduced cost ranger’s had when using those GW hammer skills. Sorry it has been SO long since I played GW1 I forget what it was, same thing that created the infamous Touch Ranger.
Since GW2 skills aren’t part of the specific weapon but instead part of the Class+Weapon set, it could easily be done if Anet wanted to craft it so. I seriously doubt they will.
The biggest part of facing off against the original Thumper Ranger, since I monked RA, was the kitten oversized Moa screeching in my face and covering my screen. Just pure intimidation when flat on your back.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
you know nothing of the legendary bunny thumpers!!
This is true… got a link to video so I can get know’d up?
Yup, with no Expertise attribute, ranger’s can’t “exploit” the
usage costs of the hammer skills like Bunny Thumpers could.
It seems that Initiative would be better suited to pull off the venerable
build of old. It was fun to play and fun to watch.
I think that we will get a hammer. I can’t guess how it would be…

Two things. First off, greatsword, which you say is a heavy class weapon, is usable by us.
Also, clearly you missed this guy, a Ranger who DOES use a hammer in GW2

Clearly ANET acknowledges the bunny thumper build, it’s part of GW history. I greatly anticipate its return.
I know about the GS… and it sucks. I know it’s usable by us, duh. Hammer just wouldn’t look right on the Ranger…
And yes, I clearly missed that guy but don’t care. NPCs (as I figure thats what it is since the link is blocked) aren’t held to the same rules players are for obvious reasons.
Hammer and focus would both be good additions to the ranger. We need a serious power build weapon and I just really love the amount of focus designs in the game and anything that leads to more utility/party skills is a great welcome on the ranger.
I mostly just want o run around with http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Courage , I don’t even care if the skills ended up sucking or being condition based.

My Norn ranger would run around with the Courage focus if I could listen to
George Thorogood songs in the background.
Must make a new GW2 playlist. Fun to be had…
I still want to smack ppl on the head with a hammer and feed them to my wolf.
I have a hammer sitting in my bank awaiting the return of the bunny thumper…. It’s only a matter of time!
And Nente was a GW1 ranger trainer, who is blatantly a bunny thumper!

I’m with you, Durzlla.
Good times are just around the corner.
And thanks to you and Ryoki for mentioning Nente.
When I smash something, I want to play George Thorogood – “Who Do You Love”

To put it in GW2 terms, GW1 rangers had a trait line which essentially decreased the cooldown on skills. That let the ranger use the hammer’s knockdown skill more frequently than other classes could. Combine it with an attack speedup skill, and a few other skills which increased damage/daze when you/your pet attacked a knocked down target. You could dish out a pretty devastating amount of damage while your opponent was prone on his/her rump.
Oh, and you could get pets to stick to people and do tons of damage. I had enemy bunny thumpers hit me for like 100-123 of my health, in a game where my health pool was like 565. I mean, the base health was only like 480.

Not to mention the deep wound and daze they throw on you too lol, or at least that’s what my bunny thumper build did!

Exactly lol. I played Guild Wars 1 for a long time, running interrupt ranger competitively even, playing/sidelining for some pretty decent guilds, and I can say that in all of that time, the only thing I feared on my ranger was a bunny thumper haha.
Warriors couldn’t spam their skills enough to hit me through my block stances, nor could most other classes, and interrupts countered the ones that could hurt me. But those darn bunny thumpers in RA man, so much pressure on such a short cooldown with such a scary pet lol.
It’s such a shame the builds I’m describing don’t exist in GW2 the devs killed my favorite class in favor of something that I really don’t think will ever be as good or as fun as what I had in the original Guild Wars.

I actually have started playing very similarly to how I did in GW1 (fight in unison with pet, each bringing something) however what really threw me through a loop was that unlike in Gw1 where my pet brought damage and I brought the control I had to swap those roles, which is seen a bit in the build I shared lol.
I do miss my bunny thumper and strike as one builds though =(

It isn’t my video, and it isn’t the best quality, and it’s also fairly early into the guild wars 1 lifespan, but here’s a video I found of an bunny thumper. Looks to be one of the earlier versions of the build, probably before the guild wars 1 Rampage as One skill even existed.

Oh, it was gloriously funny watching the build do its thing.
Ranger+hammer=fear.
Now imagine that a warrior got all hammer attacks with a 60% CD reduction
THEN got more skills to do damage to knocked down foes on a CD reduction
THEN had a pet to do more damage to knocked down foes …

Expertise reduced the energy cost of attacks, not their cooldown. Rangers could spam hammer bash more than a warrior because the bunny thumper had perma IAS for most of the entire match and burning all your adrenaline means nothing when you only have one skill that uses any of it.

I mentioned what I did because GW2 lacks the mechanics of the previous game to
even come close to duplicating the ranger’s fun with the hammer.
I doubt that the planets will ever align again (from a player’s POV) to ever
give us such awesomeness.
As you know, GW2 skills do not use the “energy” mechanics. Energy was just a way
to limit skill spamming in the previous game. The closest thing to do that now are
CD’s and Initiative (on thief.)
Adrenaline in this game fuels a warrior’s burst skills.
Not going to happen.

But Mesmers, scholarly spell casters, wielding giant, steel surfboards on a stick is okay?

Both do the same thing – limit the number of times you can use a skill in a given time interval. A cooldown is a hard limit which follows every skill use. Energy (or mana for spells in other games) is a more flexible soft limit. You can spam a bit, accumulating a greater period of time during which you can’t use skills/spells. But over the long term, the two do the same thing.
Thief initiative is the closest things to energy/mana in GW2. So is endurance, but there’s only one thing you can do with accumulated endurance.
I really liked GW1’s skill/energy system, especially as it related to buffs. There was a certain mathematical purity to it. Spell systems in other games simply told you a spell mana cost and duration, and left it up to you to figure out how many buffs you could maintain for how long and how many spells you could fire based on your mana regen rate. GW1 simply listed skill/buff costs in terms of energy regen rate, allowing you to directly compare buff costs vs. instant action skill costs.
I remember I was feared when I used that build.
You can easilly be kit by other range, but when you reach then, Hammer bash Crushing Blow and syncronize with the pet Brutal Strike and BOOM !!!!!
Hmmmm old time…..
gimme a hammer in GW2 Anet plzzzzz?
