Can I has rifle?
Well, you can be a Norn with a big, bushy mustache. My Norn engineer has one.
But I agree, Rangers need Rifles. :P
Inb4 someone mentiones lore and defines the word “ranger” to say it Doesnt fit.
Skritt Happens
It fits as well as Sylvari Engineers. Don’t let the lore stop you.

Inb4 someone tells ’’RANGErs’’ need this RANGEd weapon and say it does fit.

Aesthetics aside, what would the rifle do that isn’t accomplished already by either of the bows?
These threads always come up, and there are always arguments, and ultimately, the rifle side can always ever say “we want it” and the other side say “it isn’t needed” or “it doesn’t fit.”
If you want a rifle, come up with a unique purpose for the rifle that doesn’t just overwrite the current functions of our bows.
Maybe have it be more like a shotgun? (this is my hint to get the thread started in a more positive direction, before it devolves into the same old argument)

Melee Staff comes first. Not even to cast magical stuff, just a straight martial package bundle with some utility. Come to think of it, that deserves a thread of its own, problem is: plenty have been opened i believe.
Err, hammer before staff please. Bunny thumper!
The word “ranger” doesn’t come from the same “range” most people seem to think it does.

Based on the art of staves in game, I don’t think we’ll ever see this. They all look very mystic-y and magical. Hammer is much more likely.
As for role of rifles, if they rebalance our two bows into something with less suck, it could work like this:
Longbow: AOE / Support
Shortbow: Control / Condition
Rifle: Single Target / Burst

Spear!!! (not only in water combat)
i would love a staff . Total druidism ftw
I’m a bit late here, sorry. But no one’s mentioned it yet so it’s still valid!
Inb4 someone mentions überranger Aragorn.
Get in line please.

Going off the spear guy, it could use the spear animations and keep the staff as the weapon.
why? it would just have crappy, low damage, slow, ineffective attacks compared to the other rifle skills other classes have….in keeping with the ranger weapon theme.
- Auto Attack: pea shooter…watch out you may put your eye out! 5% chance per shot to blind ranger for 5s.
- rubber bullet: fire a rubber bullet that makes a foe giggle and increases its damage vs the ranger by 200%
- gas blast: fires a 100 range bullet that drops a poison cloud…that isn’t a poison field.
- rifle butt of the joke: hit a foe with the butt of the rifle applying a 1/2 second daze…maybe.
- lock and load of crap: 25% chance to randomly teleport the ranger somewhere s/he doesn’t want to be in the current zone/instance. does 300% damage to foe if ranger teleports. 10 second cooldown.

I’ve wondered about this for a while myself. I’d love to see some rifles come in to play. or even X-bows.
I personally always thought pistol/rifle would fit the ranger profession nicely. They’re supposed to be master hunters(albeit bow fits better with the general theme but still). GS always seemed really out of place for ranger IMO.
No rifles. We don’t need more single-target weapons, we need more group support.

i would use that. why? all rifles has better skins than bows. esp i want to use the sniperrifle and predator.

Sad but true…
Don’t forget a shotgun blast that requires you to be next to the enemy to do the damage of one auto attack because we already have 2 and the more merrier they say…
No gun/Rifle for my ranger!!! I’m no silider and that would ruil the Picture of a ranger (at least for me)!
I would much more prefer a staff!!!
I’ve wondered about this for a while myself. I’d love to see some rifles come in to play. or even X-bows.
Crossbows would be really out of place since we have guns. Crossbows and muskets had the same strengths and weaknesses; bows didn’t.
Rifles are pretty much useless on most classes that have them. Warriors are screaming for a Rifle buff…. Just not practical to have a slow firing, heavy hitting, single target weapon with a bad telegraphed animation in the fast fluid world of WvW.
Heavy Halo, Warrior JQ
staff staff staff staff . Please staff , and stick control and party buff functions to it . Example :
auto attack – slashing winds * – same attack pattern as the guardian staff . Moderate damage and attack apply bleeding on enemies hit .
number 2 – thorn pit * – spawn an area of say 240 range that applies immob and weakness every 2 seconds for 2 seconds , pulses 3 times .
number 3 – Natures blessing – clear up to 2 conditions from pet , allies and self and heal the pet for every condition cleared .
number 4 – Thunderstruck – instantly magically switch positions with pet dealing damage and blinding at both places . Effects would be a lightning strike at both places
number 5 – Tremors – take 2 seconds to summon a gorilla spirit (effect like maul or swoop ) that smashes the ground 3 times over 6 seconds every 2 seconds dazing and crippling oponents for 1.5 seconds . First strike is a blast finisher .
drooooooooooooooooool
I don’t get it why people are so opposed to having a rifle or a pistol for rangers.
I mean what difference would it make for you if it’s there as a choice for those who prefer using them over bows?
In fact I wouldn’t mind if every class had access to every weapon out there. That would help bringing more diversity in this game.
Because Taku, does a Warrior using a staff make sense? No? Well that’s why a Ranger doesn’t use a pistol or rifle. It doesn’t make sense for them to.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Does a mesmer using a GS or a sword make sense?
Does an engineer using a shield make sense?
Does an ele using daggers make sense?
Does a guardian using a scepter and a focus make sense?
Common sense and rationality are thrown out of the window as soon as you start playing a fantasy game. Not everything has to make sense in a world filled with talking rats and magic flying about.
It’s also against the lore, Taku. We’re wielders of Nature and do our best in the wilderness. And since we both know how much Anet loves keeping their invisioned lore of the classes (see refusal to give permastow for pet), it ain’t going to happen.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Then melee weapons like hammer for engineer as well. Also ranger = using ranged weapons. Not necessarily something about nature and stuff only. A lot of other games don’t even have pets for rangers(at last not permanently deployed).
bunny thumper ftw!

Godkitten , no xD Ranger has nothing to do with a weapons range!
I actually think the rifle wouldn’t fit because it’s mainly a hunting weapon/weapon of war, where a pistol (main- or offhand, maybe both?) would work because it’s more a self defense weapon, an ace in the hole when a ranger encounters somebody who has to be taken out because… well… he just stomped his… rosarium… maybe.
But I still think a staff as a kinda druidic power weapon and spears (usable on land this time please…) as melee condition weapons maybe would fit way better.
We have to get the difference between a fantasy ranger and a fantasy hunter (like in WoW).

Same, support nature playstyle staff. Please.
I’d like to see more options for bows, since there were 5 different types in the original Guild Wars.
Hornbow, in particular, could be used for burst DPS/single-target spiking.
By Ogden’s hammer, what savings!
Does a mesmer using a GS or a sword make sense?
Does a guardian using a scepter and a focus make sense?
Ahem, Mesmers from Guild Wars and lore were duelists. Imagine them as fencers who used magic to take advantage of their opponents, so yes it does. And the Guardian, again from lore, derive from the Paragons and Monks of Guild wars, so again them having scepter and focus is fine, as they came from a caster.
Rangers have a Nature Magic line so give us a staff. I also want main hand dagger.
