Long ago I tried ranger but just could not stand the longbow style, so im just wondering about ranger since it was a versatile kind of character to play, also can druid dps as good as well or do they just make better healers?

Thanks all.

Conditions kill way too slowly for PvE playing and the shortbow has poor range (900).

Depends on the content.

For open world roaming, Power would be more suitable for higher burst – you don’t have to wait for conditions to ramp up.
If we are talking about Hardcore PvE content (premade 90+ fractals speed runs / Raids), then yes, Shortbow has amazing scaling with Quickness.

If we are talking about 25 might, bannered, perma quickness environment with long encounters – A/T + SB is the meta right now.
It still sucks at quick dungeon runs.

I think I read somewhere that the breakpoint for when condi beats power is if the fight lasts 30 seconds or more. That’s probably not the right number, but the general idea is sound.

Have you tried melee ranger? It’s the best thing about the class for me, and is meta or at least viable in all 3 game modes. Sword + GS, or staff + GS.

That sounds awesome but isn’t staff DPS based around condi? What did you use before you unlocked druid?

Staff does moderate power damage because it attacks so quickly and triggers sigils, GS + staff is a PvP/WvW build. (I mean it’s still sort of crap, but it does all right. It’s a utility weapon.)

Before HoT, I often roamed WvW with s/d + GS. And s/a + GS is a reasonable dungeon running build. Open with swoop and maul, then swap to sword.

So in other words, gs/sword for pve not staff.

GS + staff is outstanding for open world because of the mobility. For dungeons I’d definitely take sword because GS and staff are both low damage. For mid level fractals GS staff might be reasonable as support? I don’t run fractals anymore.

I’m using a SB on my condi ranger.
In PvE it will slow everything down as the dps increases as the fight goes on longer, and most mobs are trash mobs meant to be killed quickly.
So to compensate I use a power-based pet with burst damage.
Once that pet’s skills go on cooldown, regular PvE mobs are close to death and my conditions start to kick in and finish them off.

I really like the Power GS build in open world. You close fast, interrupt when needed and #2 can one shot in most zones and has a low recharge. Being stunned, interrupted isn’t as big an issue either because pets keep on hitting … or your pet takes the attack for you. My only issue with Ranger is cleansing but you rarely need it so the CD on the signet that cleanses is very reasonable.

Admittedly, haven’t tried sword since the last patch. I still stick with LB on swap for access to barbreaking knockback but if you don’t like that option, there are a few other ranged you can choose from. Very useful in HoT.

I’m just experimenting with Axe condi builds … a little slower in open world for sure. It DOES build bleeds extremely fast though, with covering conditions as well.

I think I read somewhere that the breakpoint for when condi beats power is if the fight lasts 30 seconds or more. That’s probably not the right number, but the general idea is sound.

Now that’s new to me and interesting. Do you know where you might have read that? I would like to dig further.

Lots of places, the number will be different for every build. But the general concept is damage over time takes… time. Think about bonfire vs maul. Bonfire is the more damaging skill but it takes longer to see that. Maul could be “0 cast time” if you start before you arrive at the target.

I would either check the dungeon/raid/fractal forum or just ask the guys there for more info. Those tend to be the math folks since PvE has 1 “right” answer and PvP is a lot more complicated.

I am very happy with the SB – A/T Condi build I am using.

Good survival-ability and I can solo most difficult HPs in HoT. No, not the Mushrooms lol but one extra person and the Mushroom Kings are doable :-)

If you play solitaire with only one suit, your game is going to end faster and feel lacking.

Man I may have to go this route does anyone know how druid staff is doing for condition dps now? I really love the concept, plus it looks flashy.

It’s a niche play-style.
Staff never was for DPS, neither Power, nor Condi. We always used staff for filling up Astral Bar and it’s mobility.

Long Story Short – your DPS will suck a bit more than in Power Staff setup – but having staff already meant horrible damage to begin with. You won’t die from running the Crit Bleeding version of Staff – it’s a trade of damage for utility.
