It’s better to get more crits than fewer and bigger crits, you’re a ranger after all they are tiny anyway you have one single skill across all weapons capable of doing big numbers and that is maul on greatsword everything else is needles pricks compared to other classes make sure they crit as often as you can to make up for being tiny.

I say on a power crit spec you want over 50% crit chance with oils and food this should be easy to get.

I would put the 20 you have in toughness into healing… but that’s fine. With your build, you have alot of power, I would recommend going purely for crit chance. Make sure to get a superior Sigil of Air to go along with it

I’d go for Rampager’s. Anything that has a high precision bonus is fine. You’ll be having a bit of a hybrid going on I suppose with the extra condition damage. Honestly, in your position, I’d go for Knight’s gear.

A ranger does less damage than other classes if you disregard the pet that’s not even up for debate our personal attacks do less damage than other classes and aside from maul none of them will give you very big numbers go for the sustain in critting more often because +crit damage does absolutely nothing unless you crit in the first place so make sure you do.

The only thing you need to consider is fury the higher uptime of fury you have access to the lower your critchance can be.

I run a power/prec/evasion build. The sweet spot for crit chance depends on your weapon and build. I use SB and S/D and have the following stats:
2004 power
2034 tough
50% crit chance
51% crit damage

With a proc on crit sigil you are procing nearly evertime the cooldown is up.

18k+ health, all with food buffs.

These stats really allow pretty high levels of pressure—you can’t burst people down, but you sure can quickly wear them down. It is very survivable due to high vigor and 4 evades (1 with SB and 3 evades with S/D). Healing is 0, but you can still get good regen.

The nice thing about this build is that you can very effectively solo and roam, and then just switch around some major traits, utilities and weapons and contribute relatively well to a zerg.

Overall, I find this build more survivable than condition/bunker because I can keep my distance and have more effective evades and higher tough/vit. It does require a LOT of practice to become proficient with the 1-hand sword and how to switch between being on the offense (while your TU is up) and defense (S/D while TU is on cooldown).

Sword autoattack. Sword 2. Greatsword 1. Greatsword 2. Greatsword 3. Even Greatsword 4. Each of these will crit for high damage (1k-3k) when built properly. That’s not even with might stacking.

In tournaments, I use a roaming build where I don’t even use my Pet, I’ll set my Pet to guard a capture point while I roam off to cap a different one.

You know not your own class.

Actually, Manekks original sentiment:

Is spot on, and the numbers can be found here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Critical#Table

As far as myself, I have 49% crit chance and 56% crit damage. I would flip those numbers If I could through gearing, but I would end up sacrificing too much other stuff.

My original statement was “That notion is very build dependent, some things are stronger with higher crit chance, some are stronger with higher crit damage”

True, and the chart doesn’t show that well.

So I’ll explain, look at the left hand column (chance). Starting at 50% crit chance with 0 crit damage, that is when you see the first instance of where adding crit chance versus crit damage will net you the same damage increase (any other time more chance is a better increase).

This occurrence happens at:
chance-crit
50-0
55-5
60-10
65-15
70-20
75-25
80-30
85-35
90-40
95-45
and of course, if you have 100 crit chance, then the only thing you can add is damage.

Looking at those specific places on the table, if you trace down from them (for instance from 50-0 all the way down to 100-0), those are the only times in which adding crit damage will net the same or better increase by adding crit damage.

It is also important to note that this is damage over time (meaning that you will still crit higher with more crit damage), so in general, as the number of hits approaches infinity (large sample size for accuracy) the chart shows the amount your damage will increase by.

Heh, interesting that such a topic’s devolved into a kitten contest between two posters…

Anyways, on to the OP!

Really, I think it depends on what you’re trying to do. Some builds won’t need a high critical chance/critical damage rating, while others will. A big part of the question, too, is whether you’re going for PvP, PvE, or WvW…

Personally, I’m sitting at 2080 power/2060 precision with 58% critical chance for 75% critical bonus. All without giving up my 2540 armor and 15k hp. As a side note, I don’t even think I carry food/oil on my Ranger…

I would suggest ignoring this person… since he thinks Ranger does less damage than other classes….

He’s not wrong nor is he saying ranger’s do less.

Ranger’s damage is multi-source; many of our attacks deal large amounts of condition damage; a large portion of our damage also comes through our pet – as a result for balance reason our base weapon damage is lower than those of other classes.

Thus our direct damage can be considered “needling” and crit damage is remarkably less effective for ranger’s than warriors or mesmers for example (“less effective” doesn’t mean useless, just, it’s a point of consideration)

I believe your original statement in response to me was that I should be ignored even though what I said was entirely correct, I only lashed out at you because you acted like a smug kittenhead for no reason when I was giving good and correct advice, read more carefully next time and if you’re unsure what the person means ask them don’t tell others to ignore them because you are unable to understand what is being said.

As has been said before, it depends on your gear, your build, and where you want to play it.

In general, if you prefer suing sb and sword you might not get as much benefit from higher crit chance and lower crit dmg than someone running lb and gs, which are slower.

Having said that, move things around, try different weapon setups and builds and see what works for you. If you find something you like, then you should try to compare damage/survivability/utility to other builds and see where you might be lacking and how you can make up for it.
