Q:

Been a long time since I’ve played my ranger, thinking of coming back to it and even making a second one for a different ranger build. From what I’ve seen so far there seems to be the following choices for specs in wvw.

Spirit Roaming condition/regen.
Shout based bunker.
Trap Conditions
Zerk longbow Glass.

What are the currently community opinions of these specs and what would be the optimal traits/gear setup for each of these?

Spirit Roaming condition/regen. —-- good for roaming, ideally for point defense such as ruins, but it only works when opponent want to fight you. (if they run away you have nothing to do since this build has no burst to take anyone down)

Shout based bunker. —-- least useful build, only for fun and troll, not recommended.

Trap Conditions —-- maybe the fastest camp-wiping build for ranger. Also good for roaming.

Zerk longbow Glass. —-- has its place in chaotic situation during zerg fight, but well, maybe the glassiest of all classes.

Over all, I still think the Trap build is the most useful build for ranger since day1.

If you like to do it all and have fun, condi/trap is my favorite – I take sword/(any 2nd hand but axes) + shortbow for roaming, axe/warhorn + greatsword in bus (survivability).

Most rangers doing mostly bus tend to play signets (30/30/10) and direct damages (though not glasscannon, dies way to fast and act as rallybot) with greatsword / longbow

- Spirit build is useless in bus – though it might be fun in the ruins;
- Some roamers play an hybrid beastmaster, which might be fun for camps, but useless in bus

- Shouts isn’t so great in most situation… If you have no ele or gardians, maybe it can be :/

Trap ranger I go full rabid. Like CRabbit put it, probably the quickest camp clear build, maybe spamming Pistolwhip is quicker a bit. Get some stunbreak though, this build can die quick if you don’t know what you’re doing. Get river drake and RoA against other players or Entangle for camps.

Glass longbow build. Have been playing this most recently, I use knight earrings and rings. Shared anguish is a must for me, I go 30/30/10/0/0. As I have a Charr I run Hidden pistol, Lightning reflexes, Hunter signet, RoA with LB/GS. It is a lot of fun if you know when to turn away from a fight.

Khert Devileyes – Ranger / Mano Negra – Thief / Nagymbear – Warrior /
Elona Bonechill – Necro / Fionna Gymirdottier – Guard /// RoF

I run a LB and S/D Evasion Tank setup that works extremely well for roaming and actually does very nicely for dueling as well. It is a shout-based type of bunker with high power (2200 power/3300 attack unbuffed), 3000+ armor, 19k health, 48%/37% crit chance/damage. You will have perma regen, perma swiftness and a constant stack of 6 might.

Build: Updated Evasion Tank

I’ve posted this on the forum before and no one really paid much mind to it (which is fine by me!). However, it performs extremely well. There is great synergy between LB and the S/D weapon set and if you run a shout build, you can have good sustain with 0 healing power.

And most importantly, it is extremely fun to play!

Interesting, for roaming spirit builds, which would be preferable? Dire? Rabid? or Apoth.

In my opinion, LB is a totally waste to your build, SB+S/D will be much better.
It’s a hybrid tank build but you can’t call it a bunker build with 0 healing power coz it’s not bunker at all.

Actually SB has very poor synergy for S/D power builds, although it has somewhat superior DPS for close fights. It offers a redundant and less effective poison & cripple, and poorer/less effective interrupts. The knockback on LB is amazing, and the stealth is a life saver and can be used offensively as well to close distance and reposition. I’ve also found the extra 300 range for LB to be very important in roaming fights.

If you manage to master all those while dealing maximum damage and staying alive, zerk longbow class is the most effective. It’s also the hardest to master. If you can stay alive, pick that one. The others are just long drawn out battles, which in WvW’s case, if it comes down to outlasting the enemy group, it seems the victor goes to the group with the best condition cleanse/boon strip (or best rotation) neither of which the Ranger possess effectively.

The top 3 will keep you alive longer and provide a little more utility for your group, but in all honesty, what the group needs is for you to be able to deal extreme damage which they can provide, much more than what other classes can (despite what people think). What you’d provide with those top 3, every other class can provide much better (except a thief). What other classes can’t provide is the extreme burst damage a zerk glass cannon can provide.

One thing I’ve learned, people mainly spec themselves with a focus on defense, conditions and condition removal, but aren’t really prepared to take burst damage. For instance, I just happened to have clicked on an enemy warrior commander earlier this week, whom I’d assume was spec’d for survival (given how much damage I dealt). I hit them for around 30K in less than 6s before they went down, then another 4s before they were completed dead.

The top 3 builds you mentioned have their place, but the bottom one also has it’s place too.
