Hope for mediocre changes and be happy if they exceed your expectations imo. Substantial means nothing, $10,000 is a substantial amount to a low income family, $10,000 is peanuts to a millionaire. So putting faith in one word that can be very different depending on what your view of substantial is, might be setting yourself up for disappointment.
I hope they exceed expectations but I’ll settle for some decent fixes.

-Fixed an animation bug that allowed rangers to equip weapons.

Can someone quote a promise made by Anet for a release on the 15th? From what I read Jon said mid November that is not an actual date so if it’s not out tomorrow please do not say anything was promised by any date.

This is actually a valid point; the best I can do is find a post 10 days ago that said the changes would be happening in roughly two weeks…

But there is. Take your negativity elsewhere. Anything is a major buff to real rangers. By real rangers, I mean the rangers who started with a ranger main, even if shelved, and plan on playing ranger again, not because they may become the new fotm. but because they love the class. There will be those class hoppers who jump from class to class looking for their crutch. Anet is best in the business at fixing and balancing, so Im sure they will buff us substantially. Like necros did.

You forgot to include the animation bug that forces pets we find in the world to follow us.
Could you imagine how awesome it would be if those things actually attacked people? We’d be OP!

I rolled out my thief and enjoyed mindlessly dominating for a little while, but that got rather boring in short order. So I just haven’t been playing in a couple weeks.
I’m pinning all my hopes on this patch, whether I just give up or stay, and I really really wanna stay. Besides the functionality issues and bugs, I love the ranger, and rather am fond of this game in general. I know I’m getting my hopes up, and am a little sick with the anticipation of the changes. I’m optimistic, but a sort of desperate optimism…

Why do you need this gear? To do dungeons… duh.
I’d be happy if the patch notes just read:
-Fixed blade trail bug
-Fixed block bug (did not make it last 3x longer this time)
-Svanir runes invulnerability is now tied to the control effect, if broken with stability or stun break the invulnerability now fades.
- Fixed thief stealth bug for now displaying the character for many seconds after the effect has worn off.
Any ranger buffs after this point will just be added bonus’, the first three being MUST have changes as they are being exploited in tPvP all over the place.
Watch it get delayed.

I gave up on bows in PVP a while ago, hopefully they give me a reason to try them again, sad that GS has more survivability moves then either bow. Sword just needs a reworking on the rooting, and maybe make the evade skills proc the 2 seconds of protection trait. Axe main hand needs a little more damage, off hand its really meh, but WD has its uses in aoe farms. Dagger is good, maybe make the 4 skill a longer slide?
If they fix pet f2 abilities, and let pets attack while moving I would be forever grateful.

Pets now give opponents ailments and help hinder them. Every 6 seconds your pet passively applies a 1 second stun on your opponent and every 10 seconds your pet passively applies a 2 second blind. Pets now do little damage, their f2 abilities have been made major aoe crowd control abilities.
As a ranger you now take 50% of the damage you used to take.

Those numbers sound big but would probably translate as staying a live for 2 more seconds and hitting like a bb-gun instead of a pea shooter.

You hop on your bear with a rusty sword and charge recklessly to your demise while shouting obscene things.

That was just brilliant. Would look pretty funny with an asura riding the bear. But even funnier with an oversized norn or charr causing the bear to charge and then fall to the ground with it’s legs pointing out in opposite directions.

Add this to your 2k Longbow crits and finally realize the damage potential we have.

Every class needs a counter. The ranger counter is people who use movement keys. I’m pretty sure you’ll agree, if they wuld just stand still, or better yet go afk they are far easier, you can even kill warriors, thieves eles, guardians, burst… bunker spec’d, whatever… they just have to slip up ever so slightly for a minute or so and just stand there.

no i haven’t seen a date stated, however he did say next patch. So no reason to think it shouldn’t be this patch as it is the next major patch after the post.

Either that or add a rainbow coloured trail to my pets. Then maybe I would bother rezzing them (for the cases where it’s pointless).

I get your argument, but it’s a bit short sighted.
So you talked about pets being able to attack while moving being a fix. So what happens in PVE, and WvW… and in fact everywhere, where there is AOE that just obliterates the pet in about 2 – 3 seconds. Where’s the benefit of moving and damaging there?
I get what you’re saying, fixing the pet while moving while attacking will hopefully give it a solid damage output. That’s fine, but then we need to fix the fact that pet’s get obliterated from AoE. Ok so we fix that, that’s cool, they get some sort of trait or something that reduces inc damage from AoE. That still isn’t fixing the poor AI on the pet’s for movement and the plethora of bugs people have encountered.
If every single one of these was fixed, then yea, we probably would be doing some nice damage, but I don’t personally see that happening. ( I really hope I’m wrong)

I’d be happier (not happy but happier) if I did 2.5 – 4k and my pet did 2k. At least then I’d be in control of most of my damage.
If rangers aren’t drastically fixed this update I’m just going to roll a dime-a-dozen OP warrior, because as of now they can do everything we can but 3x better.

Don’t think like that, there is a reason rangers were nerfed to begin with, it’s because Rapid Fire was basically a death sentence to anyone who was caught in it without dodging/strafing (if you were stunned for example). In the betas I could easily dish out 20k damage with Rapid Fire, from a rooftop, without ever being hit. With a greatsword we could deal about 30k DPS in 10 hits, we WERE, for the lack of a better phrase, overpowered beyond belief.
Therein the problem lies: they overnerfed rangers to the point where their only use is serving as a botters dream class (or an amazing farming class). Currently we have great survivability, but our group play and DPS are very lackluster. No smart group will ever choose a ranger over a warrior, even a warrior 30 levels lower than an 80 ranger has more to offer to a group than us currently. This games’ grind revolves around dungeons and group events, sure we hold up all right in the damage department, but literally the only support we have is our spirits, which are extremely mediocre (bar our elite, which is one of the best healing supports in the game apart from its ridiculous cooldown time), and Healing Spring, which is the best water-field AoE in the game. Even if a ranger was fully decked out in support I would still take a warrior for the DPS and natural survivability, unless of course they were a crappy 5-sig warrior haha.
Arena Net broke this class before the game was released, and then put off its update to the point where we are now the laughingstock of the community, falling behind eleys and even necromancers. If this update doesn’t fix our gut-wrenching problems then honestly there is no point in fooling ourselves to play this class anymore.

Ok so we fix that, that’s cool, they get some sort of trait or something that reduces inc damage from AoE. That still isn’t fixing the poor AI on the pet’s for movement and the plethora of bugs people have encountered.
When I was playing WoW, we had the same problems with pets. It takes almost two years for Blizzard to fix it by reducing AoE damage to pet in dungeons and lattely scale our pet with a percentage of our stat.
After that, you could finally play a beastmaster (i.e. a ranger who deal damage equally with his pet).

Well put Linnes. Ranger was very OP in the betas especially Sylvari rangers with their vines/entangle + hunters shot+rapid fire = death to all (except those with retaliation/reflect)

Rangers have no spike build unlike other classes. Even all berserker gear hits for no more than 2-3k a hit on a crit. Pets die too easily in group events so you instantly take a 30-35% dmg reduction. I would like a function to stow pet permanently and gain a bonus = to % of pets stats. Either limit the burst dmg from other classes or scale up the burst dmg of the ranger. Ranger has some nice survivability but a severe lack dmg. My lvl 15 warrior hits lvl17 diessa mobs for 1/4 the dmg my lvl 80 ranger hits orr mobs it is quite humorous. All with lvl 8 weapons and mismatch fine lvl gear.
