Defy Pain & Harmonic Cry [Video]
So, does it mean Defy Pain is bugged/broken if it doesn’t apply to the ranger or has it always been this way?
I see a lot of people running around with a bear pet
I’ve never seen anything to suggest that defy pain would prevent damage to the ranger. Why would you think it would?
Well, there are a few places in the tooltips where “you” is a bit ambiguous, and searching the ever-wise internet, there were a bunch of places that suggested that this skill affected the ranger.
And for some reason, this skill has a range of 1200. So if it only affects the bear, what is the range for?
Thus, I asked and then researched and tried to confirm. So it appears to be working as designed.
Harmonic Cry seems to be used by Moas when the master is at ~50% health AND is in range, or the bird gets to ~25% or several allies that aren’t you are near 50% health and nearby him.
The heal is an AoE radius effect (one that needs to be larger imo, but is functional as is) and last i tested (this was FOREVER ago) the heal was over like 3 pulses, but i think it’s changed since then..

defy pain is for the bear, not for you
Thx for the clarifications!
I’m still pretty new to the profession, so I’m trying to make sure I understand how things work. There’s a pretty large amount of old information around on the web, and it’s a bit tricky to sort through what’s still relevant.
Don’t use bears, their autoattacks do less damage than a burning tick from a condition spec, they’re just bad.
Use drakes, who can be just as tanky and do way more damage on top of doing basic aoe damage.
Moas are also another terrible pet. Their damage is pitiful and in this game the sooner you kill things the less damage you end up risking to take.
Stick to dogs and cats for sustained single target damage, raven for burst, drake for aoe/cleave damage, and spiders for safer but lower ranged damage.

Moas are pretty lacking cause they effectively only have 2 skills instead of 3 since their peck almost never hits ever.
Bears you’d want to take because they’re tanky as kitten and have a bigger hitbox than you do which makes them a very good meat shield. You can easily use them to eat projectiles and other attacks on a regular basis (i have several friends i duel that can vouche for this) plus their F2s are, for the most part, very good and useful. and they provide a nice (almost guaranteed) buffer if you have a squishy pet, IE you have to swap your squishy pet out and you KNOW you’ll keep a 15s CD instead of having the second pet die too and end up with a minute CD.
Now i’m not saying take a bear with any build, and i’d never recommend taking 2 bears unless your goal is to do as little damage as possible, but they have a use. Moas i wouldn’t take for anything more than wanting fury unless they get some fairly big changes. They also have the lowest stats out of every pet, including bears.

Thx much for the help. If your curious, the reason that I was exploring these pets was I was wondering about a possible tweak on my build. It looks like this most of the time:
After I did some analyzing, it looks like the drakes are only doing about 12% of my total damage output in WvW fights. So I started wondering about taking Sharepened Edges as my adept trait in the skirmishing line.
Because I’m using all dire gear, my crit chance isn’t that great. So I looked at using the Red Moa to give me a high uptime on fury (especially combined with the 5 seconds on weapon swap).
Because the moa seems really fragile, I considered pairing it with the bear. This also looked like it would have nice synergy because Empathic Bond is my only current condi removal, and occasionally in heavy condi fights (like necro), I have trouble.
What I thought might make the whole package better overall was the heal from the moa and possibly the defy pain from the bear. And since it was a bit tricky to find answers on just how these worked, I decided to do some testing.
Anyway, I’m learning a lot and appreciate the advice. I’m now testing Primal Reflexes instead of Agility Training as the adept trait in skirmishing.
