Devourers
They definitely hit the target more, and I like their f2 skills. With their defense they seem like a sturdy, reliable, sustaining pet. The damage seems less than the melee pets though. I use a devourer on my condition/crit build.
best thing about devourers imo is that they can keep poison on the target. -33% heal is pretty nice.
I think they’re pretty decent pets. Don’t expect much damage, but they’ll be around most of the time. They’re kinda like a mobile turret.
I run them for months now. Since my main build hasn’t got any points in BM I like devourers most in WvW. They’re tough, keep themselves alive well enough and provide decent (condition)damage.
I definitely use them. Since they start their attacks without running into the middle of aoe (ex siege outside of a keep situation) they survive alot longer then say my jaguar. Plus they have a fair amount of health for a pet so I really like them.

You wouldn’t like devourers if you were BM? How so?

I think he means they can survive well enough that he doesn’t feel the need to spec BM when using them.
Devourers aren’t very good for BM builds because they do pretty lackluster damage, and if you’re running a BM build you’re probably counting on your pet to put out good damage. The fact that they’re ranged also means that they don’t really need the extra survivability BM builds give the pet quite as much.
Conversely they’re good for non-BM builds because their survivability doesn’t suffer much from lack of points in Beastmastery. Using a cat with no points in BM is going to get it killed very easily, but Devourers have good survivability by default thanks to ranged attacks and high toughness.
I really like Devourers appearence-wise, probably my second favorite pet family aside from Drakes. But since I am a BM build, I don’t get much use out of them unless I’m fighting something I know is going to slaughter a melee pet (like giants).
Of course, once I start getting into dungeons I might find more use for them. I haven’t done any dungeons yet, but from what I’ve read even BM builds have difficulties with pets dying, which would make a ranged pet more useful even if they don’t put out the damage most melee pets do.
Devourers actually do a deceptive amount of damage. Despite them having the same amount of offensive stats as a Bear, their autoattack attacks twice. And their autoattacks poison.
Which is really good for getting stacks of RaO! (every autoattack hit gives you 2 stacks of might).
My favorite pet.
Stat-wise they have the same Power as a Bear, and I think their basic attacks even have somewhat similar damage. But bears attack much faster. Attack speed is actually probably the main problem with both Devourers and Spiders, they just don’t attack fast enough, so overall DPS is low.
Bears themselves are more tanks than damage dealers anyway, though. While Devourers may sort of compete with Bears damage-wise (pretty sure bears win out even still, though), against something like a Cat they get completely overshadowed.

Nooooooooooooo.
Devourers do WAY more damage than bears. Test it out yourself.
Electro, the reason I picked a devourer as a beastmaster is because it seems that the WvW community has learned how to avoid getting hit by melee pets (running in a straight line already makes you avoid most damage. Run around in a circle and you become untouchable). The devourer however manages to hit reliably up to 600 yards, and up to 900 yards he still manages to land a hit every now and then, mostly because his autoattack fires two projectiles instead of one.
Hence, overall, unless I’m fighting an idiot who’s standing still, my devourers seem to outdamage every single other pet.
