Hello,

I am loving the game and the ranger play style and have gone with bows because I prefer ranged over melee. I also really love the traps and have put points into getting the ground targeting for them. I am disappointed though that it only gives us a distance of 600 and it makes it kind of pointless sometimes when I am trying to be ranged. I wonder if there is any way to beg for arena net to look at this and maybe consider giving us a bit more distance- even if it is only up to 900 it would be awesome. =)

Just seems like for 20 points in a tree it would work efficiently all weapons not just melee- or even a different skill point that gives traps more distance would be amazing at this point and I would probably go into it.

I actually agree with you, the increased range is rather small. It seems to mesh well with shortbow and melee weapons, not so much the longbow.

Well even the shortbow and axe you are having to move in- shortbow is 1200 and axe is 900. So it is only good for the Greatsword and sword as far as not having to move in to use them- but then if you are already in melee range do you really need the talent for them to be ground targeted? You are basically already there.

Made it to 40 this morning and found out that the range is not that far, I was extremely upset and immediately respeced in something other than traps. I hope they boost the range on it, I practically throwing a trap at my feet.

Shortbow and Axe may have maximum ranges far further away, but their optimum range is closer to that 600, or less. Sword and Greatsword probably gain very little from the ground-targeting, as they have no hesitation toward entering melee as it is :P Longbow is probably the only weapon truly unable to effectively use this.

I agree.. along with several other traits, this ability sounds good on paper, but it set up in a way that it fails to synergise with how rangers actually play.

It needs to be buffed up to 900/1200 for it to be useful

Same can be said for Opening Strike — why on earth make something unusable at the distance which it is encouraged we attack from?

900 would be optimal, you don’t need to be a trap sniper

I think 600 is fine, the point of the trapers expertise is to be able to place them without moving to em, IE guy with sword is charging you, throw trap in their path and run away giggling, if it were from 900 range that’d be a bit OP sniping people with traps, especially if you have the grandmaster trap trait…

I don’t think you would be sniping from 900 range lol. I just think that it seems like a talent that was meant to make traps viable for ranged players yet it is too short for the ranged weapons to use comfortably imo.

Traps are viable for ranged players without the trait. I have used Shortbow with Axe/Warhorn since very early on, and have used traps since level 5. A ranged player strongly benefits from traps, even when they are only placed at your feet. The increased size is the real benefit of that trait; the ground targeting is an odd addition.

I’ll agree with a slight increase. It really doesn’t need that much more to make me happy with it.

I’ll agree that increased size is the main reason I keep that trait on when I’m running a trap build. Sometimes I get a little annoyed that throwing them is more trouble than it’s worth when I’m kiting around 6-7 enemies but that is not a problem with the skill inasmuch as it is a problem with the UI in highly mobile combat.

While I despise the minimum range as much as the next guy, I can see why A-Net put the range at 600.

At 600 range, you can still set traps, but you’re setting them between you and the enemy, not on top of the enemy. This means you still have to lure the enemy into the trap, as opposed to just using them as over-glorified AoE spells.

It’s not as big of a deal as you would think, just set up traps before combat so the enemies run into them. The only issue you’ll run into is trying to re-apply Flame Trap or Viper’s Nest if you’re running a Trap condition damage build.
