Do pets use their skill sets in a timely manner, or does the pet AI just spam skills?

For example, canines could knockdown enemies. Does the pet AI function the same way as henchmen mesmers or rangers in GW1, where the AI will wait for an enemy to use a skill before using an interrupt skill?

Pet AI is terrible, they spam. A bird with swiftness will still use quickening screech when it should be attacking. Most pets open with the same skill every time though so you can mostly count on canines opening with their knockdown and drakes opening with blasts, etc.

Hopefully one day Anet will realize that it wouldn’t be “too confusing” for us to have access to the pets full skill bar since they are leaving the pets with garbage AI

Pets have a skill priority they work through. If you open up the pet menu you can see your pets skills and your pet will prioritize using the skill furthest to the right and work its way to the left. That means that once the skill furthest to the right is off cool down they will prioritize using that skill.

It would be more optimal for us if we could tell them when to use their skills but since that is not available we have to deal with cancelling their priority skills until we want them used.
