Hey folks.

I am a pretty experiences player and am just hitting 80 with my ranger and loving it. However whilst i’m quite experienced in dungeons and know the types of role/builds that most classes can bring, i’m stuck as to what is the most effective to roll with for my ranger.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sword/warhorn and LB, you will use 90% time Melee, in FOTM sometimes i use double axe too.

The ranger’s most effective role is to increase the party’s damage output. Their main strengths are Frost Spirit, Spotter and providing fury. You’ll want to use a Spotter/Frost Spirit build. 4/5/0/5/0 with Sword/Warhorn and GS. See my guide for more details.

another trait variant, more survival, minimal damage loss (loss of some precision and 5% extra dmg modifier,vs more hp and some more power)

If you want some more, interesting approach. Try a DPS supporter

4/2/0/2/6 is not a bad build
+10% damage when endurance is full
spotter
Pet gains 1 stack of might on crit
Vigorous spirits
Shout master
Rendering Attacks
Invigorating bond

use Drake and Artdoctus bear (only that bear, no other)
What will this provide?

If you stay in melee, you will provide spotter, DPS boost for your pet, fury from Warhorn, bonus from spirit. But most importantly, if you run like 500-1000 healing power or so, you will heal your party every 20 seconds for a small-medium amount.

I reccomend trying out Zealots to not “lose” too much DPS (main stat power, precision, healing power). It gives you a secondary “support role”. While you can maintain as much DPS as possible. It also gives YOU added survivability.

Armor – Celestial
Trinkets – Zealots with Assassins “gems” in them
Weapons – Assassins
Food – Butternut curry squash soup or whatever… +100 precision and 10% crit damage (150 ferocity)
Oil – Sharpening Stone

It will be a bit different then usual. but with a drake pet, you should be able to do close to “normal” zerk DPS (thanks to really hard hitting pet F2. Tip – Fire hits harder then lightning, if there is only 1 target. Because of burning. Marsh hits harder then lightning because it does roughly same “direct” damage, but has poison too)

Does anyone know what the best alternative to 1h sword is? I know it’s not optimal to switch from it, I’m just kitten at using it and was wondering what I can use in its stead before I get used to it.

there is no alternative.
GS can MAYBE compete in damage, but you lose out on fury, might and a blast finisher for the party. Mainhand Axe is terribad in PvE for anything but killing/tagging weaker mobs.

I wouldn’t give up on having WH on a second set. That 5 is way too good as you said.

GS is the next best thing to sword. Best you could do is run GS with x/WH. Start the fight with a warhorn blast and hope your fury/might lasts long enough for the entire fight. Take 2H training to help with your own personal Fury.

Okay, thanks. Me accidentally leaping out of the stack or not being able to dodge in time and dying seems like a bigger drawback than the DPS loss of the sword, so I’ll take it.

it is better to just learn the way of the ranger short sword then be mediocre with a bigger sword

While staying alive is important, I encourage you to at the minimum learn how to use sword on the easy dungeons. That is everything but Arah and FotM, it’s fairly trivial to use sword since a lot of the fights are stack and burn. There are a few exceptions where you need to max melee range like Ginva and Collossus Rumbulus (PUG strat)

GS is ~17% worst DPS than sword.

GS is ~17% worst DPS than sword.

What factors into this statistic? Is it just the autoattack damage, or is it accounting for things like 2h training and warhorn?

Auto attack and Maul under optimal conditions, no 2H training.
