F1 and F3
Has been suggested hundreds of times. Apparently giving the Ranger more control over their pet would make us overpowered and too difficult to play.
DId you take into consideration that due to lag/excitement etc people often tend to jam a button several times? This could be solved by a cooldown on the button however some people might not like this.

Having “lock target” on its own button, means that you can change targets quicker. If it was as you’re suggesting, you would have to call the pet back, and then send it to attack again, every time you wanted to change targets. Meaning there would be a higher chance of the pet screwing up. Sometimes pets are also slow to respond, meaning you need to press F1 several times.

Maybe If they do that they’ll change the icon as they do with the active/passive icon.

That’s not how this would work.
Imagine there were 2 targets… Target A and Target B.
You would send your pet to attack Target A by pushing F1. You could have your pet stop attacking Target A and return to your side by pushing F1 again. If you want to have your pet attack Target B while it’s already on Target A, you would simply tell it to attack Target B. The script would know that you told it to attack a target it wasn’t actively attacking and would switch targets.
As for mashing the button etc etc, this isn’t the same as the F2 abilities that need to fit into an attach chain and wait for their time to go off. F1 and F3 always work and no mashing is needed. If the above script doesn’t work, it’s player error.

F3 doesn’t always work. There’s currently a bug which I haven’t quite figured out yet. But it goes something like this:
Mob A hits your pet with an AOE.
Pet goes to attack A.
You call pet back (F3).
Pet returns.
You attack mob B.
Pet attacks mob B with you.
Mob B dies.
Pet goes to attack A.
Probably a carry-over from mob aggro lists, and pets using the same AI as mobs.
It’s been suggested before but I don’t know if it will get any traction. ANet has said more than once that giving us control over our other pet skills increases the learning curve of the class too much (which I personally believe is a load of bull, but that’s besides the point).
I’d be in favor of the button combination. Telling pet to swap target would be as easy as re-targeting and hitting the button twice, not much of an inconvenience for a simplified UI that would potentially give us access to another skill. Now if only those skills would work reliably and the pets could also hit the targets we send them to reliably, this idea may be really worth pushing for… :|

Please god no, I like to spam my F1 key (it’s a habbit developed from other pet classes) to 100% guarantee my pet got the picture of mauling who I want him to, this change would make my pet useless for a vast majority of a fight….
We gain 0, I repeat 0 benefit from your suggestion, however I wouldn’t mind them making it an OPTION to combine F1 and F3 and make the new F3 a “stance swap” IE Guard <—> Passive
EDIT herpa kitten I jumped the gun on reading this, I’d rather be able to have my own bind for come back than them both being F1, I’d probably just say make the call back F5 (but as said above can be merged into F1 with attack target)

Passive fixes this, it’s good to utilize both.

Please do what OP suggested for F1 and make F3 a pet “dodge” skill.
Melee rangers can not call back their pet to avoid bosses AoE, in most cases they die/ get hit on their way back.
Please make F3 something like 2s pet dodge, se we can have some window for our own personal dodging.
