Doing It With Style

I’ve been dueling in sPvP with this build (with Shaman Amulet, Dwayna Runes) and the people i duel with all said the same thing: “You have good healing”
Great build can also be done with all out Cleric’s gear if you don’t like Condition damage, with either bow and a GS or Sword/offhand and don’t want to spend astronomical amounts on the trinkets.
EDIT: Seriously considering trying this for my melee ranger that uses cats. Not for zerging though, I don’t like zerging. =P

Any updates or further observations on this build? Also, the video link still doesn’t work
Alright, take 3. Video is uploading (again) and should be ready in an hour.
I’ve been playing lots of wvw with this build. It’s a lot of fun. 1611 healing on max buff (I have some of ghe wrong trinkets) and basically really nice survivability, particularly in a “zerg” (platoon). I will post some video of my play as soon as I get the chance to compile it into one video.
I also want to note that for the video, I used as few of my wolf regens as possible. I also tried to minimize the amount of healing I got from Troll Unguent as well. Between the two, I can stack 28 second of regen every 25 seconds. Most of the regens applied were just from traits and runes.
I might try your build, but if I do, I’ll probably go Runes of Melandru and the food that reduces Condition Duration. I understand your rune and food choice, but I don’t like putting all my eggs in one basket, and condition removal lately has been awesome since there are so many Condition Damage Builds lately, and fewer burst builds.
Great work on the buid by the way.

Just a heads up, this build has condition removals built in. Four conditions removed every ten seconds (and the removal timing is independent of when conditions are stacked). Also if it gets real bad, you can pop the signet for instant removal.
Still, to each their own. I would strongly suggest using fern hound if you do use Melandru though because you will be missing out on a lot of regeneration, and that’s a HUGE part of the build.

I havn’t played my Ranger in a very, very long time. Why Troll Ungent over healing spring, and if you’re wanting to max out regens, why not Runes of the Dolyak?
Troll ungeunt heals for 4k more, the regens apply passively (please see earlier posts), and runes of the dolyak only give 40 hp/s with #6 ability which is garbage in comparison to the regens applied and lengthened by dwayna runes.
Have you considered the blast on water fields that Healing Spring would bring?
And by roaming I guess you’re running solo most of the time? Troll Unguent does nothing for a partner.
Yeah this is for solo roaming for the most part. Leap finishers (I think you meant this since you can’t get blast on ranger) in healing spring don’t match troll unguent unless you really go out of your way with greatsword and sword (which is a different weaponset). If you are fighting an enemy who kites you, it’s tough to line up the S2 leap finisher as well, so you might not even get it a lot of the time.
I agree on your choice of using TU, even in my heavy regen spec I still run TU.
Haven’t noticed it yet, so I took the liberty of plugging your build into GW2buildcraft’s calculator:
Stats reflected include food buffs and 25 stacks of Healing sigil. Based on your screenshot, I assume you have not upgraded any of your Ascended items, but instead used Fine Infusions.
I did NOT include sigils in this link because I’ve no idea what (other than Healing) or where they are.

Dolyak Runes heal for 30/sec…and are NOT modified by Healing…the Regens and Healing from Dwayna are superior unless you lack toughness.

I fixed it to add sigils and changed one of the traits. I don’t use bark skin since I’m tanky enough anyways. I use the one that knocks conditions off since this build is otherwise lacking in removal.
Sigils don’t stack on both, so if I want to stack life then I make my first kill with axe . If I want to stack corruption, I make the first kill with sword.
Lastly, I kept the food as described here. Despite the huge regeneration ability of mango pie, I actually rarely use it unless I’m in dungeons. I normally go for veggie pizza.
Mango Pie, Veggie Pizza, or Lemongrass. Those are the three most viable foods (in my opinion) for this build. Each servers different purposes and excels in different scenarios.
Listen to the latest Mesmerized podcast about the discussion on foods and how they are the one thing about your build you can swap while in combat ;-)
Faux, question about regen and confusion stacks.
Do you take confusion damage with each tick of regen? I can’t verify if regen activates confusion damage or not.
Is the regen high enough to offset the confusion damage? I’m wonder how a confusion bomb memsmer with their extended condition time and hard hitting, quick confusion stacking would fair against your build.
Ug, if my mesmer were 80 I’d duel you to find out since we’re currently both in T5.
Regeneration does not tick confusion.

It’s definitely not high enough to offset more than two stacks of confusion, so the only way I can really fight a confusion bomb mesmer is by winning through attrition. They are long fights and not very fun from the ranger’s side :P
When fighting a confusion mesmer, Ranger’s have a unique advantage in their pet. Most others have to either cleanse or stop attacking and go on the defensive 100%. The Ranger, on the defensive, still has their pet chomping the enemy mesmer.
@Faux Sheaux
Did we fight you yesterday? I was the a 3 man group of [STAR].
We fought a small group of GH and there was a ranger that really looked like the screen shot you posted.
And he was also really tanky.
Yeah that was us. Our little group of 3 that kept getting stmped by you and TRI. We tried to dance to get your attention that we weren’t aggressive but you ganked us anyways lol. We set up a bunch of skirmishes with the TRI group afterward but couldn’t get your names to invite STAR over as well.
If you see us running around and want to try some more skirmishes feel free to message me.
If you ever catch a sylvari ranger just running in place, that’s Menorah too. Came back to see 5 of us standing around’em staring. Started to cry so I stood behind him to provide support. Provided an amusing sight. Take note of the body position of a Sylvari when they cry.
Once you go Norn, you never go back, right, Menorah? :-p

Those were some nice fight.
Was actually the first timne we fought along TRI, I don’t know many small group roamer in AR.
We had some great fight, been a long time since I didn’t get zerg to death all night long. Was cool to find other small group. Especially for our first run as STAR.
I gotta say I’m not a fan of organized fights, I prefer random encounter. Never knowing how many the ennemies are, not knowing if reinforcement is coming. Love that aspect of Open World.
Hope to see you again! Now at least I know everything about your build! mouahah! :P
Been playing this setup the last 2 days on my ranger and love it so much.
Having fun again with my ranger, can’t wait till I get better with the different weapon skills.
Thanks for sharing your video and build!
The survivability of this build is really impressive. Well done, it’s nice to see the ranger holding their own against the standard annoying class builds that everyone seems to be using.
If you ever catch a sylvari ranger just running in place, that’s Menorah too.
Menorah is obviously the inferior sylvari ranger on Ehmry.
/flex
Running in place? I mean, the least you could do is run in circles. Owait…
Looking forwards to checking this build out, got kinda bored with all the long/short bow ones
BTW, by ‘Apothecary gear’, you mean all of it? As in weapons and armor? :>
Absolutely.
Everything.
Am try this build on PvP it freaking amazing die hard.
But I fix some traits for my use.
If on WWW I think try Shaman set or kaka(Apo set). But Accs IDK maybe use rabit or shaman or carrion or cleric it cheeper.
Guard – Very anoyying pet can bite enemy when pass or choke point a lot of player don’t care my dog because “Ha!!ranger pet is paper tiger this stupid pet can’t do any dmg!!” Yes …I like it.
Pet full BM and guard stance active and enemy stay on sight is deadly licking you like makeing dead manchine!!
Sick’em – for someone who too much glass shout your pet and bite them hard die faster!!
But not try more with combo aother weapon SB + Axe/torch is not blaze aera healing enough I must try 2Hsword or 1Hsword may be.
So I dropped some gold and made all my apothecary gear. Got rare accessories atm and exotic weapons. What I find is that since im still new to the mechanics of the mele weapons that Im not killing as fast and unless the enemy has a few buddies, they have an impossible time killing me. Still hard against mesmers though with little condi removal in the build.
Im really enjoying the play style but I keep falling back to my sb. . Mostly because once they start running I cant seem to catch them with this build.
Runners and 3 man fights r giving me hardest time so far.
All in all, I do feel godly out there.
Gear Head
Sylvari Ranger
Dragonbrand
Tweaked this to more suit my prefered playstyle …Shortbow. (plus, I also had the problem of people runing away…and Axe couldn’t stop that from happening) So I replaced the condition damage for Power. (Power/Toughness/Healing). I just recently added two pieces of Power/Toughness/Vitality to get the HPs up a bit.
My base healing is still at 1200ish without the 25 stack.
SB+S/D
I think I have some kind of Stockholm Syndrome or something. Any game I play I always seem to pick the class that needs the most help. So I am very used to struggling vs OP classes.
Now, after using this for a couple of weeks I feel dirty
More fights than I like end in a draw (fights I normally would have lost). So far I would say the winning percentage is 80% or so. Really good players will still beat me…and I lose to hard core GC thieves at times because I get lazy and over confident and don’t do a pre-emptive TU. Overall I feel a little overpowered….and believe me, it’s not because of any “skill” I have….cause I am average at best.
..and now Rangers are getting a boost next patch ? Hrmm
Edit: What I find really strange is sometimes when I am bored I say kitten it, and only use S/D in my next fight. Pure toe to toe melee ….and I win. Not sure if that should be happening.
(edited by Forzani.2584)
Only class I have issues with are confusion stacking mesmers/Engis, and can still beat them but it requires maximum focus. After the 30th that will be a thing of the past. Everything else melts.
As you said, stockholm syndrome, Rangers feel like they need to fit into some bow/ranged archetype and not branch out, your downfalls and shortcoming are your own.
I’m actually a bit worried about the patch, I feel as if we are going to be a little over the top.

Hi, just a quick question: I cannot afford the Apothecary set, anyway I could buy a full set of Cleric’s. Is this build still viable in Cleric’s? I have always wondered why everyone states that Cleric’s does not work with ranger.
What’s the song in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZH42X_doMc and do you have some kind of playlist? I like it alllll.
Also best build, I’ve been running a similar thing with clerics, you’re basically an unkillable machine. I’ll have to try apothecary if I can get enough laurels.
Your damage in nthis build/gear comes from conditions, clerics gives you power, so no, this setup would not work as well. But I know several rangers that play with clerics but go either double bow or GS etc since those aren’t so much “condition” based weapons.

The song is Boomerang by CIRRUS.
Looks liek it would be a fun build to try out. Saw all the ascended gear cried a litte on the inside. Thank you for making the vid and talking about the build.
I duelled a ranger with this setup yesterday, well something like this I can’t be sure exactly what he had only that it was a BM condition spec with high healing, came close to killing him a few times when we were sadly interupted by others (was in the eternal puzzle so pretty much inevitable I suppose) but ultimately ended up loosing the 2 we didn’t get interupted on, didn’t even bother switching to empathic bond would have been nice to see how that would have played out but he wouldn’t duel me again the kitten. :P
No updates on many of the better “builds” and that saddens many – we’re trying to build a decent Ranger… not easy.

What are you looking for? there’s tons of builds posted everyday I find

You’re fine. Buy the Apothecary you can afford. Fill the rest with “of the Shaman”. Try and get your toughness above 1400, or as close to it as possible. You can use a peice or two of Clerics, but I wouldn’t use more than that. In this build you are all about staying alive via passive healing while your pet kills people anyway. Most of this build’s damage will come from a pet.
I would actually recommend mixing in a healthy dose of “Shaman” gear to anyone trying this out. Macing out on Apoth will give you a ridiculous amount of toughness, but with all the people out there running condition builds, you would do well to put your HP up around 22k -ish
TL;DR -
Make sure every piece has healing
Get toughness up to 1400 minimum
“of the Shaman” everything else.
EDIT for those who HAVE to try it, this build does work with power instead of condition damage. It just isn’t quite as effective due to synergy.

I would suggest running fractals, doing your dailies/monthlies, and guild missions. You can get your full trinkets set relatively cheap in a couple weeks starting from scratch.
I really like how this build looks and the videos are great. I want to try out this build. But I have a few questions:
1. How does this build work in open PvE?
2. How does this build work in dungeons?
3. How does this build work in fractals?
4. If I would go with clerics gear instead of apothecary which weaponsets would you recommend? And why?
I already thank you for your answers.

1. I don’t know, I only WvW.
2. See #1.
3. See # 1.
4. Personal preference, really. In a build like this, you aren’t really looking for damage, you are looking for utility. Keep your self alive while your cat takes care of business. The 1h sword and the greatsword both have very good utility for you. Other than that, personal preference, really. I have seen it done with everything out there.

1) It doesn’t kill as fast as a trap build would. It doesn’t take too long to kill stuff though. I ran berserker for 1200 hours and still feel the damage of this build is somewhat comparable (I’d estimate about 70% what I did before after factoring in pet). You will never die to random mobs again though.
2) You outlive your teammates. Again, damage isn’t quite as good as it could be with a trapper or berserker build. However, you’ll be the one saving the day if your friends ever wipe or you need someone to kite the Shaman around in fractals.
3) See above ^
4) I don’t suggest cleric. I suggest apothecary. It’s not about doing more damage. It’s about stacking your opponent with up to 7 unique conditions at a time so that your pet can maul them, you do good damage, and they can’t do a thing but die to your awesome. People do make cleric work though, so in the end I guess it’s up to your own playstyle.
Whoa I just realized you’re doing 0/0/30/10/30, Faux. I have been running 0/5/20/15/30 for fortifying bond, which I find much stronger. Also, to answer other questions, I have found this build great in open world pve—particularly southsun cove and orr. My playstyle involves crippling and chilling for my pets.
I’m somewhat worried about this against Sword + Dagger thieves. Now they can steal our regen which is a large part of our hp/sec.
After they use their flanking strike, they have 5 seconds to land their boon steal on you (which also hits hard), so you have to be much more careful.
I personally view the regen boon as supplemental to the Passive Regens (Natural Healing/SoTW) especially when matched with Mango Pie for a 3rd passive regen.
They can strip the regen all they want as they just keep coming back. I am thankful the passive regens cant be stripped….that would suck kitten…

Frost trap + run, but, ya, you’re right. Anti-boons are coming!
