Fellow rangers lets play the waiting game >:(
we already got revealed
Druid, we get a staff using vines to cripple and immoblize.
and now rumor is we turn into out pet for an elite or f skill
in all likely hood, thief will be last cause of the kittenstorm coming when Anet says “theif gets staff, not rifle”
cause thats seriously gonna end badly =/
(i blame the game art showing a thief with rifle during beta…..)
I think they wanted thief to have rifle so they could be like the sylvari snipers that were in game, but then figured out they would be massively OP, high damage range with lots of stealth options, it was never going to be able to be balanced.

That sounds familiar…

The invisible killshot thief. Only the new ultra high damage shot will instantly teleport them away from the target 1500 units and fire instantly. If it misses you can just keep going until it hits. No initiative cost :D
Yea we’re stuck waiting now. But I just hope that we don’t settle for the “I hope Druid fixes the ranger” type of talk that I’ve started to see. If Druid really is that good then we would all be forced into it and that would be kinda terrible if you ask me. Since we’ve apparently got a lot of time before we hear anything, we should go for fixing core issues so trait lines just determine a build’s style and not viability by default.

Imagine a 1500 range Backstab.
waiting has never really paid off for us now has it? it’s been a month and still no balance in sight. most amulets are useless for us because on low vit, we get popped for 80% of our HP in one shot. we have two useless offhands, a useless weapon, and two viable power weapons that are virtually hard-countered by the popular builds right now. Anet keeps adding more reflects into the game, and blocks have been spammed for too long now. we have an entirely useless utility line (spirits) and a utility line we cant use because it removes all of our survivability (traps).
so im not sure what im waiting for tbh. for them to fix half my prof? or to nerf other profs until my broken prof is usable? they haven’t even patched the insanely broken kitten that’s making pvp a circus right now. I doubt the ranger is any of their concern.
I’ll say this much, I’m not looking forward to druid if it is a support role.
We are in a burst meta after all…

Well with teleports and steal range they already sort of have that – although obviously not nearly as hilarious as backstabbing from 1500 away (without needing to gap close at all) would be.

Your worries are well founded. These are the exact things you’ll see by spending any time at all on the Necro forum. “Reaper will fix it” “the nerfs to core necro are to balance the reaper”.
ANet is literally nerfing the core classes in order to balance the Elite specialistions, which strongly that suggests that they are expecting everyone to take the elites at all times. Like Ranger pets, you will use them.

If that turns out to be true the only thing stopping me from just outright deleting my Ranger is the crafting 500s that I have done on it.

If it sticks to the AOE CC/Support role then, yeah, I’ll never use it because….

And we just about always will be as long as the point of an encounter is to kill something. Infact, timers and the like make the bursting meta that much more important.

Except that support is exactly what it would take to get Rangers into the GWEN wvw and pve metas.
Realistically, I think they could get into those meta’s with a change to the spirit system, making them auras that radiate from the ranger (active effects also radiate from us when triggered) instead of immobile totems with 10 hit points and die shortly after being dropped unless placed “in safety” (aka too far away to be useful).
Druid will certainly have both offensive and defensive abilities, and certainly the change to our class mechanic would take into account the type of pet (increase our defensive ability if we have a tough pet, increase our burst if we have an offensive pet). Support does not have to mean bad burst (points to guardian’s “Feel my Wrath”).

People need to stop with the “shapeshifter” biz.
Why would they give us a staff allowing us to finally actually wield “Nature Magic” only to then make the entire subclass about turning into a bear or cat?
It would also completely change up the way the pet mechanic works entirely which has always been something they have turned their noses up at every time we bring it up.
GW2 Druid isn’t going to be WoW/Diablo2 Druid 2.0

i said it was rumor
and truth be told, turning into a giant wolf with stability, speed, and toughness is appealing. it beats the current spirit elite we got

Norn already have that market cornered unfortunately.

If staff is an AoE Control/Support weapon with some swiftness or super speed on it, Druid will be amazing. LB/Staff or Remorseless GS/Staff will be… omg.
I’d really dislike transformation tbh.

Don’t have to use them

Rangers being viable as support doesn’t depend on the Druid so much as it depends on HoT content. If the game is still Piccolo’s training camp (“DODGE!”) the zerk gear will still be the only thing dungeon groups really want. If ANet finds a way to make it consistent, but smaller, amounts of damage in addition to dodge spikes without it becoming tedious, THEN a support specialization can be useful, and we might get to see some real group action.
Otherwise, how much/well we heal will never matter, since healing isn’t currently doing anything.

Those roles are generally desired for PvP and WvW, not PvE.

What are these roles designed around?
PVE? No.
WvW? No.
s/tPVP? Yes.

Most definitely in WvW.
Only if something is OP in WvW do the tone it down, just like PVE. They really do balance around 5v5 pvp.

Ok no idea what you are talking about now.
I said that, in reference to the comment I quoted, that support roles are really only desired for WvW and PvP, not PvE. Nothing to do with balance.
So a support role for Druid would be quite good, hopefully it does decent damage too.

The biggest support role in the new borderlands is likely going to be reflects for the gratuitous chokes. Unless we bring something better than wall of reflection or ranged water fields, I don’t know how much of an impact a support specialization is going to make.
Will it be good? Maybe.
Will it be good enough to make WvW/GvG focused guilds bring Rangers? Hard to say.

Keep in mind the new siege weapon is a reflect machine

I meant any balancing having to do with WvW or PVE is an afterthought unless a mechanic is brokenly over powered. Then, and only then, will they touch something to balance it. 99.99% of balancing is done in the 5v5 pvp context… but support has to be balanced too.
I do agree with ya though, on the Druid, but without decent damage it’ll not see use in PVE except by PHIWs.

That is a really, really cool idea.
They could buff rangers right now if they
-gave us back ground targeting for traps
-made spirits follow us again
-gave spirits more hp

Taking them back to where they were, which was still crap.
Traps need more utility like the kd on spike trap. Most likely stability due to the lack of stunbreak.
And spirits need useful buffs in meaningful amounts.
Aegis, resistance, stability, and more might.

Screw ground targeting for traps, make them an elite kit with a smoke trap, then you still have access to your utility skills.
