Fleshing Out the Ranger: Combos
I’d really like to see Lightning Reflexes generate a lightning field at the point of activation. I don’t know if that would even be useful or not, but I’d still enjoy it lol.
Man, if Spirits put down Fields, I’d take back every nasty thing I’d ever said about them.
“Make Serpent’s Strike a Whirl Finisher.
Make Finishers from pets benefit the Ranger.
Give Spirits a Field.
Make Pounce (third auto attack on 1h Sword) a Leap Finisher. Crazy idea, but just thought I’d throw it out there. :P"
I agree with the others, but I disagree with these four. Serpent’s strike a whirl finisher? It doesn’t even look like a whirl. It’s a dodge roll. Finishers from pets affecting the ranger is just as nonsensical.
Spirits should not have fields. They’re buffers, not field generators, though if Anet ever decides to completely overhaul rangers, I wouldn’t mind having a couple of mobile combo fields around. It would make off-hand axe incredible with its 100% projectile and whirl finishers.
As for pounce being a leap finisher, that would be absurdly overpowered.

Um… Fields can buff? Just look at Healing Spring and the Null Field, Chaos Storm, Sun Spirit Aura (beta version of natures vengeance).
I say just make their active create a field that does their effect over and over again (IE a fire field that blinds, ice field that chills, lightning field that damages)
@OP, a few of those (mostly what the guy I quoted said) are ridiculous, and idk how PBS and CS even -look- like blasts… Now maul…. That’s a different story…

Can’t say I’m seeing how Maul is a blast, but if AN changes it up to look like a ghostbearsplosion I’d be all for it.

Well the bear smashes its paws on the floor, it could totally pull off a blast more than shooting a single arrow that has no indication of a blast at all.

Aye. If any skill is currently candidate for becoming a blast finisher, it is Maul. It would instantly make it a viable main hand. Can you imagine that? It would still have low damage, but with the Ranger’s relative easy access to combo fields, it would have so much interaction…

This, I think if they put a blast on GS that weapon would be a perfect spot, no more buffs or tweaks it’d be where it should be as a support/tanky Melee ranged weapon, if people want ZOMG DMG! In Melee they can use the 1h sword and suck it up.

i agree, having more finishers and fields would be a lot more fun and interesting. as it is, outside of healing spring, rangers have some of the worst fields and finishers in the game, having essentially no blast finishers (best kind) and only 1 whirl. fire fields is meh, ice is okay
To be perfectly honest, making the Ranger the ‘combo master’ of the classes sounds like a good idea.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald

We have access to at least 2 fire fields, 1 ice field, 3 poison fields, one etheral field, and a water field, we also have access to an ungodly amount of physical projectile finishers, 1 whirl, 2 leaps (well our pets have leaps but those don’t affect us, so not counting them), up to 2 blasts (2 drakes, both use same skill, CD refreshed on swap, however drakes are bugged atm and wont use either their chomp OR their tail swipe which makes me want to cry).
PS: Use a warthog if you like fields, they can give you access to a poison field that lasts for kittening days and the rangers only etheral field, which if you whirling defense in (no quickness) with a target you’ll be able to apply up to 20 stacks of confusion onto that poor kitten.

I made a thread advocating making Maul a Blast Finisher. Check it out here if you’re interested.
Sword’s auto-attacks kick and pounce both have a leap range(400 and 430).
I always wonder why they are not leap finisher.
Some skill with shorter leap range is leap finisher.(Ex:Sheil bash)
If it will make it too OP, why not apply a percentage like most projectile finisher.
Something like 50% or lower leap finisher would be fine I think.
If maul is to be make a blast finisher, did that mean bear’s maul will become blast finisher as well?
Toughness/healing/anything build + the attack speed of sword + water field = immortal
the chance would have to be really low.
I’m all for these ideas. Well, most of them. Definitely need more pizazz for our bow attacks so giving Concussive & Point Blank Shot blast finishers would be amazing. And Maul too; GS needs some loving.
I don’t think Rapid Fire needs 100% projectile, since you tend to get procs off of it anyhow. And Rapid Fire is the best damage dealing attack LB has so don’t nerf its damage output.
I’d like to see combo fields for all of our traps, not just fire.
As for Spirits, if they created combo fields I’d say definitely only on activation of their skill, not passively. But I think you can only give all traps fields or spirits, not both. Both would be a little OP imo.

I love my porcine pets and the warthog has some amazing items. The only problem is that while they work quite well in melee, at range they’re awkward to utilize. You’re counting on a melee teammate using the foraged item. Most of the time they don’t even know what the items are. I’d love to see a change in the Forage mechanic where, like Thief steal, after foraging our F2 becomes the ‘use item’ button. This would make combo fields from Porcine pets much more useable (and not dangerous in PvP).

I disagree that they work well in melee due to you having to pause everything to pick them up. The very act of picking up items is also pretty buggy at the moment, making things even worse.
I do however agree with making foraging similar to the thief’s steal ability. One problem I foresee however is that this would instantly make our bacon friends the best pets we have by far.

I can see that, but I suppose you could scale back the Porcine’s damage a little to compensate for their awesome Foraging abilities. It would make them great support pets rather than straight damage dealers. As it is, everyone uses Ravens & Jaguars cuz they deal the most damage. This would be an alternative to those who run support builds, or help to boost survivability.

I actually use canines in PvP for their CC, and the fern hound in PvE due to his regenerating shout. Tests conducted by me and others also concluded that canines are the best damage dealers against moving targets. But I digress.
We already have a lot of fields and finishers. When you add in that you can select pets to add more fields (Poison anyway) and finishers (mostly leaps… at least until they fix Drake blast finishers) we’re pretty well off compared to some other professions.
That said, I wouldn’t mind adding an ethereal field to Muddy Terrain. It’s already cosmetically a lot like the Throw Gunk effect. And is somewhat boring otherwise.
Buffing off-hand axe to either let you use the Whirl on the move, or making Path of Scars have a secondary effect might encourage use of the whirl-finisher we have as well.
I really can’t see an arrow shot being a blast finisher. At least not any of Ranger’s arrow shots, it would have to be something that would explode. It would be useful, but I just don’t see it making sense.
Don’t like the idea of making Rapid Fire weaker just to give more combo field compatability. Punishes those who don’t utilize traps or Healing Spring regularly, and Rapid Fire isn’t all that amazing as it is. Maybe just boost the combo chance to 50% instead of 20%, that way it benefits more from combo fields but doesn’t suffer otherwise.
Viper’s Nest being a poison field also doesn’t make sense. It a bunch of snakes biting whatever triggers the trap, don’t see how that makes a poison field. Plus, Ranger already has quite a few poison fields from various pets (all Spiders though it doesn’t last long, Carrion Devourer, Murellow, one of the items the Warthog can forage) so it doesn’t really seem like more are nessicary.
There’s no such thing as an Earth field, so…
Serpent Strike being a whirl finisher could be interesting, though I can’t really see it helping much, would only launch 1 projectile since its a quick attack.
Pets having their own finishers something I’m quite fond of, don’t think they should affect the Ranger as well, at least not by default. They’re 2 seperate entities, even if they’re partners. Though a trait to share finishers between Ranger and pet would be cool. Put it in Nature Magic to synergize with the Fortifying Bond trait.
Spirits getting a field would be cool, as long as its tied to the active ability and not just a constant field on the spirit at all times. Would give an actual reason to use the active ability without the spirit being in melee range, I’d like that. The only problem is that, as above, there’s no such thing as an earth field, so I don’t know what field the Stone Spirit could possibly have. Darkness? Poison? Neither really fits the mud thing, but… either that or maybe Stone Spirit could be a Blast finisher instead of generating a field.
Pounce being a leap finisher, while fitting, is very broken. Would give too much healing in Healing Spring, even if it was a 20% chance, and even free auras would be too much. Auto attacks having non-projectile finishers is a no-no.
Maul as a blast finisher would make sense (at least as much sense as Guardian hammer’s jump being a blast) so I’d be all for that.
For ideas of my own, I’d like Winter’s Bite to become a Projectile Finisher. Its obviously a projectile, and mainhand Axe should have at least one 100% finisher I think.
Lightning Reflexes could be a leap finisher, that’d give it a bit of extra oomph, though it needs to remove Immobilize as well (and its probably a bit more important that it do that than become a finisher).
