Even by leaving aside what is addressed as the the ‘main concerns’ of the ranger class by most of the player base like ‘underpowered/pet problems/weak spirits aso.’, this is a really bad update compared to the statements made by Anet official side.

Underwater damge buff?
Spirit proc increase?
Combo finishers?

I mean…come’on. I’m not the one demanding an uber-ranger, an I still get around with my ranger, but adressing things that have almost nothing todo with the real ranger issues, is not what was expected from most players.

And, for me, a ranger should be the dominating class when it comes to competing with a bow. Because that is the essentials of a ranger as a class.

So I see other reasons here:
Its obvious that most bots are ranger classed. Bots create gold. This gold will be sold bypassing Anets trading mechnisms and therefore cost Anet a more or less significant amount of real money. So they may have more concerns when doing ranger changes than with other classes.

But i think some improvements for us rangers will come sooner or later. But more the later…

You are so right.Its a company and aims for the money..Everything is done for the money.I cant understand how you will raise your money by dissapointing all those real rangers but i geuss that in the end its the less of 2 evils

No pet fixes? No bow fixes? No signet or shout improvements?
The devs said our utilities were weak…and they still are. But hey, at least underwater we’re better. Amiright???!?!!!

I see a lot of talk about ranger weapons, but I don’t think that is the real problem. I think sword and longbow are both good weapons, which is why the changes take longer. The problems are deeper, in pets ability to hit moving targets, trait lines with not enough viable choices and skills that are often too specialized to really compliment the weapon builds. These aren’t things we can change overnight. The change to Greatsword block was in fact a very difficult change, but we made it because we knew it was the right thing to do.

The fact that the playerbase is unimpressed with the unimaginative bow skills may not be your most immediate concern, you can’t discount it as a viable argument. After all, we as players are the voices you want to give creedence to. Professions need to be not only viable & effective, but fun to play.

There are >500 skills in this game, 480 traits, and 2 designers working on this.

Wait, you only have 2 people on your staff working on skill & trait balancing and bugs? That’s….kinda ridiculous. Can you pull a few people from your Special Events team and put them on something that we really need dealt with? Like making our skills, traits, and utilities fun, effective, and not broken???

woke up early this morning excited to see the long awaited patch notes (I’m not in US)
and what I felt after reading it was a big disappointment + there’s a bonus of “ninja trap nerf”..
I didn’t even know what to say..

I decided not to make any post and decided to wait until I get back home after work to ‘cool’ my head a bit and see if at least the ninja nerf will get fixed

there’s a saying “fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me”
the former was after the 40ms nerf, the later is today
I’m not even blaming anet anymore. if there’s anyone deserved to be blame, maybe it’s us for putting high expectation for them when they’re unable to deliver

after the 40ms nerf I’ve already re-rolled to guardian as I had a feeling the future was not looking good for ranger

but then came the promise last month that no changes done on ranger in order to do further test and significant changes will be made

Hope filled me up and I even decided not to gear up the guardian to full exotic (which was already 80 at the time) and just use up my spare time to level another thief alt (which is also already 80 now) in hope of the day of the supposed promise just to be crushed back again today

I’ve played both of my guardians and thiefs and I can say they are both far superior than ranger even when they’re not fully geared up

it’s a good thing to read that now the ninja nerf is fixed (is it really fixed?) otherwise the only thing ranger good at maybe only for ori farming (wait.. while we’re at it, maybe they’re not even the best at it !?!?)

anyway, as a personal ‘vendetta’ (just for myself and I urged everyone not to follow me), I will not spend any single cent to anet until the day ranger issues get fixed, eventhough after this patch I can say I’m done with my ranger and will not be playing it again other than for ori farming purpose

I don’t have confidence anymore to anet on ranger issues and the way I see it, with the amount of work and resources they have, it’s not going to happen in 1-4 months time (asuming they’re only doing ‘balance’ update once a month). I’d love them to prove me wrong on this though

I hope anet will really deliver their promise one day to the rangers, I really do. although most likely I will not be a ranger anymore at the time

Ranger was my ‘first love’ for gw2 back in BWE days out of the other classes
and as what happens all time with ‘first love’, you will eventually just get over it

SO you really think, that the ranger, which class description says: “Unparalleled Archer” , is SUPPOSED to be weaker then the warrior, the average sword and board/hammer pound away dude.

I think unparalleled is defined as Ranger being the only archer that can equip both types of bow.

Pets have been hidden due to rising Player complaints.

What i can figure out is that ranger was designed around the having a pet.
It’s the core of the ranger and the pet, nowadays has big problems in his IA and many bugs.
How can you leave a core-design with such many problems?

Not only, but I find a lack in the cooperation between ranger and his pet, mainly in the trait that is supposed to help this fellowship: the beastmastery trait.

Only 5 points in that tree are really good (Zephy’s speed, all builds need 5 points in, sign of lacking something somewhere), then other traits in other trees give to the pet better utilities.
But some traits are worse than others:
Rending Attacks, Stability Training, Intimidation Training, Vigorous Training.
These traits are master, so you can have only 2 of them, taking one helps only a category of pets.
That means that rangers must choose which pets focus on, and when chosen, must take the right trait and get rid of the others.
Taking one trait above makes the ranger player excludes a category of pets and their traits and it’s not fair, it is like choosing between 9 traits instead of 12.
It’s different than chose a trait instead of another, because there’s a strong exclusion, the difference is really thin but creates redundancy of the traits.

Shouts:
They have a big problem, they arent’s shouts, they are orders to the pets, they don’t give anything to the ranger or his allies.

So, what can do?

About Bestmastery trait:
Ranger and pets need to cooperate better, in this tree, it needs traits or something else that let them helps each other.

Same for shout, they must give something to the ranger, they can’t be simple orders to the pet.

You said you need to focus on “things you know you can fix”

Let me give you a short list of things I KNOW you can fix. Today. Now. That would take you 10 minutes of coding and would have a massive impact. We’ll test it for you.

• Longbow/shortbow projectile speed. You don’t need to test it. You’ve got faster projectiles in game. Increase ours so our shots actually hit moving targets in PvP. The greatsword change is appreciated… but the VAST majority of Rangers love bows and want to use bows. Side stepping against a ranger in PvP negates 50% of their longbow damage. Side step back and forth and it negates 100%. Leet strats.

• Base movement speed of pets. Increase it. 20%. Do it now. Our pets will start to actually hit moving targets. I promise this won’t break your game. They will still die ridiculously fast in WvW, but at least they might get one or two hits off instead of zero. It’ll have next to no impact in PvE. Please do it right now.

• Signet of the Hunt. Increase it to 25% movement speed. Do it now. It won’t break the game. Thieves have it now and it would mean we have an actual useful signet on our hotbar. Don’t test it. You already tested it for thieves. Just do it right now.

That’s it. Those 3 items. 10 minutes of coding. Would give us 1000% more love then what you’ve given us today.

And make us on par, even by a slight amount, with one of the two chosen classes? Madness!!! Next thing you know, you’ll be asking for spirits to be unkillable like banners. Where does it end?!

Picking on Jon isn’t going to help. I think he’s doing a good job. But he clearly needs some minions to help him divide up the workload. Two people are working on class balance, and I’m thinking the other guy is probably Isaiah Cartwright, who does a little bit of everything. So, really, it’s probably just Jon doing the lion’s share of all the class balance work. It’s too much to ask of one guy at this point in the game’s life. Later on, sure. But right now Anet needs to hire some help or reassign some people to class/skill balance, and make it a priority until the bugs and trait lists are fixed up.

edit: and for the record, I really like the greatsword changes.

What bothers me, is that they built up so much expectations at first.
Why dont they just say: ‘Hey, we think ranger is just fine as it is…you dont get any buffs’.

That would be ok for me. I wouldnt be the same opinion, as many others wouldnt. But then I could draw my own conclusions.

I mean ‘underwater gun’ buff? What the heck. Never read anyone complaining about it, this was maybe the most fitting part of the ranger.

There is a huge difference between someone saying “I’m not buffing Rangers because I think they are fine” vs “Ranger buffs and improvements are coming!” and then deliver this.

Very very huge difference.

Not really. They got two frigging guys working on it. Over eight professions.

There are still issues from beta that have not been resolved and we are nearly three months since launch. The reason why a class is in a sorry state ends up being pretty much irrelevant when AN clearly do not have the manpower to properly devise and test and possible solutions in a realistic time-frame.

Maybe they wanted to calm down the angry community.Just for a while,just some more incomes.We gonna ruinned them eventually so why not delay it a little more.

Its all about the bots being Rangers imo…they wont make any right changes in Rangers for a long time.Its deeper that we think

Nah, it’s to promote their new “Lost Shores” events. Shores = More swimming = All classes had underwater buffs/new combos. Look at all the patch recent patch notes and you’ll see that a majority had their underwater buffs already or just now….JUST in time for their new event! But yes, it’s to fill in the spaces because we should have gotten these last patch.

Funny thing is, you’re right. I enjoy underwater because we were actually good. Harpoon skill 3 and a Jellyfish was OP. The jellyfish was so much OP that I actually use my Heal as One skill to heal my jellyfish, not me.

Don’t understand logic on how a jellyfish is more tanky than a shark though… but I’ll take it, lol.

The only thing I did not complain rangers were diving situations where the pet is a great thing ……. the shark Op …… Jellyfish are very strong …. and the ’armorfish is unstoppale…… if you do this just because you put a new map … just take me for an idiot.

And I won’t add another one, but I do hope this will (finally) get the proper attention of the devs to really put some work into the Ranger profession.

And also I agree on the underwater skill-set. It was fine and as some of you stated maybe even OP. Underwater weapon skill-set really was one of the least needed things to be buffed…

I agree that we were oversold the scope and depth of the patch (look at the wild speculation to see what people expected based on the initial Red post), but that’s not my biggest concern.

My question to ArenaNet is simply this: why don’t you have a test server for major updates? With other MMOs (e.g. SWTOR, LOTRO, WoW), they roll out major updates to a test server first, let people bang on them a bit, make adjustments, and then roll the patches out to the live servers. This helps the company understand what needs to be adjusted in the patch before making it live, and it absolutely helps the community because we know what to expect before the patch drops.

Also, two developers working on all the classes? Okay, fine. Perhaps, instead of hiring more developers, ArenaNet would consider hiring some community managers who can take feedback back to the devlopers, rather than having the devs spend time on the boards trying to defend their actions. Just a thought (and I nominate BogOtter, btw)

ArenaNet is finally putting some work into the ranger class. True, this is nearly not sufficient enough but I am so happy because something is better than nothing at all.

Now please, everyone hold hands, get on your knees and pray for more (and better) patches to come for the ranger, sooner than later.

Sure is a good thing all of those weeks ago they fixed that animation bug, that didn’t need to be fixed, and promptly followed it up with, “well shortbow 1 was spammy” and didn’t promote engaging combat/gameplay, followed by two more major patch releases that never changed anything worth mentioning.

If your not going to commit to major changes because of resources or time, then don’t reduce the effectiveness of skills until your prepared to “balance”. It’s not balance to strip down one side while never building up the other.

While I appreciate this is a video game, this is your chosen profession and commitments, and communication are paramount. If I go promise the world to a bunch of my clients, then turn around and fail to deliver, followed by making more commitments and screwing those up, no amount of expressing the difficulties in my job will alleviate their concerns.

Glad I don’t play my Ranger anymore. It’s easier to simply switch to a viable class and give up on this train wreck.

Wow man. How exactly do you know it would take ten minutes? You know NOTHING of game development then. Otherwise if you knew a way to fix/test these changes in ten minutes, you would be working at ArenaNet.

Can’t forget about QA and balance you know. It takes the longest.

I’d like to offer my services as a Project Manager to Arenanet. I manage projects worth millions of dollars every day of my life. I know what pressure is and how to deal with it while balancing the triangle of time/cost/quality with problematic (and yes, sometimes childish) customers breathing down my neck. It’s obvious that ANet could use some quality project management in their company and I’m here to help in what ever way I can, pro bono.

To the rest of you: Chill out. This isn’t some life or death situation for you. It’s a game. I challenge each of you to look back at your experience to date with GW2 and not admit that it was worth the $60 of entertainment you purchased. It’s a fun game, with a lot of fun options.

I like the Ranger class a lot and still think it’s fun. I’ll continue to play the Ranger class in sPVP, because it’s still fun. If I’m having an off day with it and desperately need to feel more viable in sPVP, I’ll play a mesmer (like the rest of you probably do) and faceroll through a ton of wins. There’s options. Many have stated they are rolling Warriors. Good…..roll a warrior. They are fun as well. Do what is fun, but for pete’s sakes stop putting real money into something if you are not satisfied with the end product. Nothing gets a company’s attention faster than lower profits, because in the end, they are not making the game just because they love making games….if they were, they’d do it for free.

Jon, you should have learned this lesson a long time ago. Never make a promise you can’t keep. You lost credibility for this class and for the game as a whole.

Now, time to move on. I am dissapointed with you saying the LB and GS are good as is. I don’t feel the LB or SB for that matter are what they need to be. Also, either fix pet AI or give Rangers the ability to go without the pet, 90% of the time in PvP my pet is set on passive and I pop the active, it takes all my damage, that’s all the pet is good for. Sad. Fix these issues, either make the pets useful or give us the option to leave them tucked away.

I got it, I know what needs to be done to fix the situation.
Jon, This is simple, first, ranger’s are still spamming number 1 on short bow, I think you need to apply another ‘graphics fix’ to the short bow.
While your at it, it appears that rangers are also spamming number 1 on the long bow, I think we need to fix the ‘graphics glitch’ on the long bow as well wink, wink
Oh, and you know that graphics glitch that roots 1 handed sword users, yea, that’s because the 1 hander does more damage then the 2 hander, perhaps you should fix that ‘graphics glitch’ as well, wink, wink.

While your at it, Ranger’s should have a special ability, called the BOAV (Bend Over & Apply Vaseline), so when we’re playing PvP and we come across any class other then another ranger, all we have to do is hit this button and it just speeds up the inevitable.

After reading Jon’s reply, I’ve decided to retire my Ranger and re-roll to Warrior as my main. After playing the Warrior for a little bit, I was amused to see just how much better a Warrior is at being a Ranger.

Jon’s reply here reassured me the Ranger class is going to be a train wreck for a long time to come. I got to the point it was literally no fun at all to play my Ranger when it was the most fun class I played in Beta.

Do what is fun, but for pete’s sakes stop putting real money into something if you are not satisfied with the end product. Nothing gets a company’s attention faster than lower profits, because in the end, they are not making the game just because they love making games….if they were, they’d do it for free.

Totally agreed, they worked in a huge patch for new content, with new tiers, new map zones, new dungeons, and they dont have time or resoruses for fix this broken class?
mm why? .. the response is in the profits.. they are doing and they will do the things to increase thats profits,, Rangers are not a priority.

I only ask to be honest with us,, thats all,, so i can decide if reroll,, if i have time,, or quit the game,, thats all

If there are only 2 people working on balancing between the proffessions, why would you waste what little time you have on underwater powers? It doesn’t even matter if our under water attacks we were fine before this ‘update’, the fact is so little of the game is under water. No matter what way you look at it, it’s a waste of time and resources.

And why did warriors really need a buff? I mean, come on. They were perfectly fine a week ago, but some of that precious time and resources, of which they apparently have so little of, went to buffing them further. To that all I can say is….really?

I do not think with all the re-rolling we will remain a large group. Maybe we are just the survivor of a wrath the developers have for bots. Would be interesting to see the amount of rangers before and after the bot purges.

Pets have been hidden due to rising Player complaints.

In the first beta weekend, the Warrior could (often did) lose to the ranger; the Ranger would spec for damage, ignore the pet entirely, and win fights.

The class that is designed to win through being superior with weapons equipped, lost on their own home turf.
You may say rangers are supposed to be the best at ranged combat; I say, there’s better ways for that to be so than raw damage.

Unparalleled archers… I think this part isn’t sinking in for you. This means that in terms of archery, rangers are on top. No one is better. this INCLUDES WARRIORS.

Well then. I’ll start off by saying, I originally rolled a warrior—and loved it. My girlfriend was playing an elementalist and hated it, when she rerolled guardian, I made a huge mistake rolling a ranger to level with her. I debated between thief and ranger, and in the end I picked ranger because I already had one leveled up to ~20. Now, I think ranger is a fun class but it definitely doesn’t compare to really any other class, dps, survivability, mobility, nothing. After the halloween event I’ve pretty much put GW2 back in it’s box so-to-speak, disappointed with Arenanet’s lack of updates and bug fixes, due to wasting my time getting a ranger to 80 and gearing it out. I read Jon Peter’s ranger update a while back and actually had hope, I thought just maybe I might start playing GW2 again when they fixed ranger (don’t get me wrong, warrior was fun but I like playing multiple classes to keep myself from getting bored). I can safely say now, goodbye GW2, you were fun for a little while.

We are unparalleled no one but a ranger can equip longbow and short bow. How well these work… Jon think longbow is fine and spamming 1 on shortbow is not fun so… we’re need more of that limited attention so maybe next year we’ll be in that place where the developer’s fine and our fine..never mind can pull anything funny out of this.

It seems like we can finaly see Ncsoft head behind Anet policy, this game is going towards the player base that is the most likely to use the cash shop and is just not going to care of the rest. Just asking if it’s viable on the long run.
At least with this update and the announcement that only 2 ppl work on the balance, i know the game isn’t going in the direction i want to , i can stop this right away.

PS: For the next patch note, say something like “Hey sorry dude i had no time, maybe next time”. its better than filling the blank with useless stuff hoping ppl wont notice, cause it just feel like you think we are completly kitten

The problem is what do you define as ‘Unparalleled’? Damage? Then yes, the ranger should do more damage according tot hat description. However, what about in other ways?
For example, firing a shortbow on the move, accurately hitting a target? That requires a lot of skill and only unparalleled skill in a bow lets you do that sort of thing. Putting more damage on the bows so it matches a warrior will not fix things. It will break them.
