Howdy! I’ve only been playing the Ranger for about a month and whenever I look around for good builds I see everyone saying Sword/Axe/Torch are all way better than the GS for PvE. The thing is, I don’t have any desire to do raids, fractals or dungeons but just open world PvE and world bosses. All the builds I see seem to be geared towards raids, fractals and dungeons. Would the 1H weapons still be the better option for general play for me? I guess I would have to replace my LB with axes or something?

I like to use the LB and swap to the GS to charge in and knock everything down then move on to the next group. I tried the 1H weapons but felt that they were less efficient and more cumbersome (maybe I am still noobish and am doing it wrong). Maybe I am also picking the wrong traits when I swap up weapon sets too but I seem to struggle with both larger and smaller mobs.

My current setup if you are interested. Built for some survivability with a bit of damage output, it seems to stay up longer than my Berserker Guardian but that one still has a lot of upgrade slots empty. Some critique would be cool too, I am open to suggestions.

LB and GS is probably the best set up for open world since you will need some burst mixed in with sustained damage to clear through the mobs fast and GS comes with nice maneuverability. Off hand Axe has nice burst to get through trash as well but I personally find Sword boring and mainhand axe is fairly medicore. Running into an Elite, Champ or even one of the tougher veterens will make GS drop off, in which case condi or swapping GS for Sword/Axe would be better but it will be nothing you can’t do with GS.

Most world bosses involve sitting back and ranging so Longbow is one of the best weapons for world bosses.

So do you run around open world in level 20 green gear only wielding main hand axe with no off hand weapon?

im starting a new ranger as well, currently only level 27

build is GS, axe/torch, 3 trap utilities and beastmaster trait that boost GS and axe skills

man, i feel things die a lot faster for both normal and veteran mobs soloed at the same level compared to my thief.

i never try this for serious content, but i’m liking it so far and plan to main this ranger

While you’re levelling, feel free to equip whatever gsear you have that is strongest. Whatever it is you’ll be replacing it in a few levels anyway, and it’s a good way to try all the weapons and see what you like.

Thanks Levetty, I figured I would be fine with what I had but was wondering if there was something noticeably better.

What about swapping the GS for the staff? Does it not also add some support options to the DPS while still allowing you to say ranged?
