Does this only work vs X abilites..?

Apparently I can be nuked down or stunned through it, when using it. Its doesnt seem very consistant in its defensive capabilities.

The GS block has a few key things to keep in mind:

1. If something is within striking distance when you block an attack from it, you’ll drop your block and kick them
2. That means that this skill is at it’s most effective when either your opponent doesn’t have stability/defiance, or when you’re blocking to close the gap.
3. Like any blocking skill, there’s a fair number of things that are unblockable.

Why don’t you tell us what exactly you’ve been hit by?

I think what u are experiencing is that u expect GS #4 to last its full 3 block seconds, which it does when hit by ranged attacks – but itll only block once if an enemy target is within its melee range, which will be a very short block followed with cc, hp loss or death.

Besides all that was said above, there are a few skills that are simply unblockable.

Building on this, I think that Fear and Taunt are unblockable, and there is a warrior signet that makes you unblockable for x duration, I think.

This, to put it generally, weapon blocks usually have a trigger skill. If this skill is a melee skill it will continue blocking as long as you’re out of range (so against range attacks basically), if the trigger attack is a ranged skill it’ll respond with the attack after the initial block either way as it will be able to execute the attack. Take a look at Mesmer sword 4 & guard mace 2 vs say Warrior sword5, ranger GS4, or Engineer Shield5 for this difference.

Just a nice thing to keep in mind if you play other professions, otherwise just listen to this guy’s advice above

The Greatsword 4 blocking skill works good. It blocks ranged attacks and melee attacks alike. Infact if it blocks more then one ranged attack you can choose whether or not to activate throwing your greatsword.

The block has worked since before the living story existed.

You can use the crippling throw portion of the skill at any time, regardless of whether or not it blocks anything.
