Having second thoughts.
So i’m thinking of continueing my Ranger
Im gonna user LB + for WvW,
and I want power
LOL
I just need to know if the choice to make a ranger will be a bad one.
Sounds like you main Thief or War…… you should probably stick with that
I knew I would get some irrelevant posts, the forums are good at that.
Excuse me for playing the game for only playing for 7 months and thief being the only character I have, how dare I try to expand my horizons?
Back on topic, anyone else have something they want to add?
Put bluntly, you’re going to have to go through a bit of pain if you want to play a ranger, especially well.
p.s. longbow is as good as most other ranger weapons in wvw (coming from someone who has used it for a majority of my 1k hours)
In the long run stats wise , Shortbow is a better condi/hybrid weapon that works well with condi bleed spam, bunker , beastmaster .
in no way it is a Power weapon , the only case for this is when its combined with Quickness traits to boost the burst damage, though the main source of damage is still the conditions+pet.
quickness+power stats with a shortbow is pretty much the same as a rapid fire every pet swap or , quicken zypher.
if you wish to use LB+s/d , main stat should be Power,Percision+condi basicly close to rampager.
its a power/condi build, the main source of heavy condis are comming for the feline pet , the feline type is up to you.
but i prefer jag as soon as someone works out you got Empathic bond on and focus the pet i stealth it and swap for drake knock backs + bleeds(but at a slightly slower application)
using the Rapid fire from Longbow to stack bleeds and Vun , in addition to the pets bleeds and Vun.
combo that with quickness and it stacks quickly does % more damage due to fast stacking Vun , though the sharpen edges bleeds wear off quickly.
the pets rending attacks last upto 7secs per bleed then factor in the pets 350 condi damage to its bleeds.
counting a pets rending attacks in game arn’t effected by the rangers condi damage and is a always a stock 495 bleed damage over 6secs (82bleed per second) equal to 820 condi damage , add in 350 from Expertise Training total 1170,
that should equal 101 bleed damage per second every time it crits.
i’ve has this from the pet alone stack up to 10 bleeds with the felines bleed attacks factored in too.
adding in your bleeds too (if using rampager) that also adds 295 bleed damage (3secs) 98 damage per second.
pet = 495 bleeds damage (6secs)
ranger= 295 bleed damage per crit (3secs)
198 bleed damage per second per stack , if all combined with the pet.
now to factor in sigil of earth and geomancy.
thats two more souces of 98 damage per second.
im not the smartest guy at maths but i know for sure that this stacks up to near 300 bleed damage a second when combining all the sources.
not factoring in Quickness, thats for burst and wouldn’t be effect to calculate that in.
use rapid fire>huntershot as a means of attack gap closer and pet speed boost to get that cat to stick >dodge closer >swap to s/w apply fast bleeds with sword auto+dagger attacks.
swap back out and point blank+barrage , then repeat. this should keep the pet on the target , though i use Warhorn for the 17x hits from hunters call , its a burst of bleeds rather than evaded attacks like the dagger, and call of the wild helps with the fury , but you can always get that if you stay near a ele or war.
its already 53% without party buffs , and this is a pure dps build/burst.
sigils are perferance, i use Sigil of earth+ agony on the longbow for longer bleeds applied from rapid fire+barrage.
and Sigil of strenght + Geomancy for S/H , would work for S/D as well
the main souces of damage is the quickness+bleeds and pet damage . the damage sources are a combination of different micro sources .
Rampager or Celestial amulet can be used.
Rampager = More bleed damage < less power+critical damage and slightly less

Celestial= standard bleeds , more critical damage, less crit hits 49% with fury , the extra power and critical damage makes up for the slightly less personal crit chance though the main souce of bleeds is still the pet+geomancy+rapid fire(sigil of earth)
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBjYDbkRlWWLZxiFuWDYIUtbhOoEYFAvL2kNrzYnSk5A-TpRAwAYOCAAuAAUeAAdOIA92fYcZAA
both types are pretty much the same , just one has more condi damage power(rampager) and the other is more sustain + burst scaling (celestial)
don’t bite my head off though peeps reading this , its a odd concept but it works to a degree, though it needs quite a bit of timing and pet control.
compaired to other Full power builds like Zerker ect, this shares your power with the pet and supports it with bleeds and conditions (applied from the ranger)
in a sense it is still a power build , but a zerker pet power build+ranger(evades + normal dps)
Ranger is probably the weakest class for WvW at the moment. That said, I love playing my ranger in WvW. Playing Ranger in WvW is “hard mode”. Here are my comments on your weapon choices: sword is the only weapon that does enough damage to come close to competing with other classes in terms of damage output (probably still not close enough to bother) but all the dancing about makes it too difficult for me to use in WvW. Mobility is important in WvW and your weapon choices give you none. IMHO, Signet of the Hunt does not give enough mobility on its own. Warhorn does give you a blast, swiftness, fury and might and in WvW and I find it much more useful than dagger. But in fact, perma-swiftness is not enough to keep up with the groups I run with. GS damage is less than Sword, but it gives you a leap with skill 3, a block with skill 4 and a CC with skill 5. By the way, using LB skill 4 at the wrong time will make everybody else hate you.
So when I think of what to bring to WvW is
- How can I support my group (Warhorn blast, Healing Spring, Spotter, Frost Spirit, etc.)
- Mobility and mobility denial (GS, Warhorn, Muddy Terrain, RaO, Entangle, Lightening Reflexes, etc.)
- CC (GS, LB 4 at the right moment like when someone needs a nudge off a cliff.)
- Damage (jk, everybody I know laughs at the Ranger’s ability to do damage).
- Equipping pets that will stay alive and do something marginally useful with F2. (jk, even bears insta-melt in most large group encounters my groups go through).
Most importantly, if you find a skilled group that will put up with a Ranger, don’t be a jerk. Because right now Warriors, Guardians, Mesmers, Elementalists, and Thieves all have rolls that cannot be replaced. Rangers can argue the point but don’t bother. Nobody is going to listen.
P.S. Skilled groups will believe you should pop your invulnerability at the right time. The only way I know how to do this on a Ranger is by giving up both a grandmaster trait and a utility slot. I don’t bother.
P.P.S. Don’t die and rally anyone.
Like I said before, Ranger in WvW is hard mode.

It’s not irrelevant if I guessed with uncanny accuracy what your primary situation was
That said… being a thief, if you can’t make Ranger shortbow work for ya then you’re a very strange thief indeed…. Just make sure your offhands are some kind of Melee combo for additional Closers, Evades, or outright disengages b/c once 2 opponents realize at the same time that there’s a Power ranger close by, the blood will already in the water and your only hope is running or hiding behind an overprotective guardian.
(I would only know this btw from having played way too much WvW on said Power Ranger … just didn’t want to admit it b/c it’s such a self-defeating proposition and it’s never a good idea to tell people you are a masochist … Dubois is 98.8% accurate in calling it Hard Mode)
