Help: Gear and Build for WvW
This is mostly WvW Orientated, but here you go.

Shortbow is used mostly for 1v1 dueling situations while longbow is for intense AoE action.
This works best with a Berserker’s set with Superior Runes of Rage.
If you’re defending a keep or if you’re at a choke point, then you can swap Quickening Zephyr for Poison Trap and Rampage as One for Entangle for even more AoE damage.
If you have questions feel free to add me in game.

I went the route a lot of folks told me not to. But I was told not to do this AFTER I got 5/6 CoF pieces, lol.
I am a power and precision junky, so I ran lots of CoF and obtained the Power and Precision pieces from that vendor. My Power sits at around 2250, don’t remember Precision but it’s up there also. I tend to hug those stats on weapons, too. I left the default Baelfire runes in the armor until I make up my mind on what runes are best for WvW. I am thinking maybe balance out my stats some by getting some Tough/Vit runes? I am not sure at the moment as the runes (x6) is not cheap.
Anyway, I ran WvW this weekend in that gear but failed to understand why people were telling me the “glass cannon” build doesn’t work. I hit pretty hard, and not being too careless with my movements, I had a great time, downing multiple folks before I got downed. I will tinker more with abilities, specs, etc. The lovely thing about gw2 is there are lots of ways to configure your one class between gear, runes, sigils, traits, skill point abilities, etc. It’s well done, imo.
oh, and Im 30/30/10/0/0.
I just did my first stint in WvW roaming with a small group of people doing events and raiding supplies.
I ran this:

As you can see, a lot of it is blank. This is because I like to “respec” on the fly. Wit this setup, I can easily switch between a longbow sniper to a shortbow trapper.
Either way, I run Signet of Stone with Signet of the Beastmaster in case I run into any assassin types trying to kill me.
Go full glass cannon or go home. Get berserker sets. Extra few thousand HP is not going to save you if you get focus fired in WvW.
You just have to do the ebb and flow dance and use your team as a buffer and even 16k HP is fine. If your side gets an orb, then you almost to 19k.
I’ll agree with Aridia. WvW for a ranger is about one thing dps. You want to get people to panic and the best way to do that is shortbow with quickening zephyr and maybe throw in sharpening stone for the extra bleeds.
Learn to stay at just enough range to where you can get away if need arises and pick your targets. Going into melee is a great way to get a nice repair fee in my opinion.
Longbow… useless. I wanted to like it. Tried in skirmishes and on defense of towers etc. The damage is just way too slow both for single target and aoe and you don’t get that nice stack of 10-20 bleeds that you can from shortbow.
Can’t agree about LB. I picked up the Ghastly LB from AC vendor and not only is it a beast in looks it is a beast for dps builds and with QZ. I haven’t done a ton of pvp but the people I’ve hit with it definitely feel it. The damage is nice enough that I’ve put away my SB for a while and just go a/horn and LB. I will be back on SB soon, though, for more testing.
Longbow benefits a lot from full berseker glass cannon builds, I’m not gonna say shortbow is better or worse, but Longbow is a must have for WvW…it’s a place where the range is your main tool and you pretty much have full control over the rest thanks to the range you have when traited. Only issue are thieves that may sneak on your back…but you can’t have everything :O

Only issue is, to get max damage out of the LB you have to be 1000+ range, and at that range almost every arrow can be easily dodged, or “obstructed”. Until they fix this, I’m only using LB for sieges. Roaming? Back it goes into the bag and out comes the SB / Axe + Warhorn.

Thanks for the info guys. I am trying to do my own thing and avoiding bandwagon builds.
I agree with you Aridia. I’ll check into it.

You can check out my thread just below and see if the build suits you

You can also dodge shortbow unless you are in close range, but if they focus on dodging arrows they won’t really get to you unless they attack from range.
Shortbow is not optimal for WvW, Longbow can also burst down someone without the need of being at 1,000+ units.
Unfortunately though, Rapid Fire is pretty meh as well. You need most of your shots to crit to get anywhere near 10k damage on a clothie, while the SB can crit for 1k AND apply a bleed and deal more total damage in a shorter time. SB / Axe + Warhorn are the best roaming set IMO
