Help making a general purpose build

This is going to be long but I’ll try to keep it concise. I’d like some help making a build because when I try on my own I get totally lost.

I want to be able to do

  • Solo open-world PvE
  • Dungeons
  • Living Story
  • WvW – taking keeps and towers with a large group and camps with a small one.

Let me be clear I don’t expect to be great at all these things, I realise that’s probably impossible. I don’t want to be able to speed clear dungeons or solo champions. I just don’t want to have to carry around several sets of weapons and armor or re-set my traits every time I want to do something new. I’d rather work harder to succeed with one build than keep switching.

(Having said that for the initial set-up I’m willing to do anything. I’m in no hurry and willing to get equipment from wherever – run dungeons for tokens, save up laurels, craft it, etc. so it doesn’t matter if a particular stat combination is hard to get or expensive.)

What I’ve decided so far

  • I think it might be a good idea to get a WvW build and just use it in PvE because it seems to matter more in WvW. But I’m not sure.
  • Weapons – I like using sword/torch, longbow and shortbow and would like to stick to them if I can.
  • Utilities and Elite – I have no preferences.
  • Healing Skill – Again no preference but in my experience Healing Spring is by far the most useful.
  • Pets – I’d like to keep using my stalker in most situations (although I’ll switch when necessary) and I won’t use spiders because I’m arachnophobic.
  • Amulet – I want the Triforge Amulet, regardless of whether it fits my build or not.

Attributes
This is where I get really lost. I like the idea of using a combination of direct damage and conditions and I know I need some toughness and/or vitality, but I have no idea how to decide how many points to put into each thing or how to split them between traits, equipment, runes etc.

I settled on 33% Critical Chance because 1 in 3 critical hits seemed like a good ratio for relatively little investment, and I’ve been trying to split the rest equally between Power, Toughness, Condition Damage and Critical Damage, and using Signet of Renewal to compensate for a lack of vitality/health (as I understand conditions are the only form of armor-ignoring damage) but I don’t know if that’s a good idea or not.

Sometimes I think I should just give up thinking about it and go for Celestial, but that seems like a cop-out and I’m sure it’d be better to focus on stats I actually find useful, even if I’m not going for full min/maxing.

So that’s what I’ve got so far
If you’ve read this far then thanks for taking the time to even do that. Any help, feedback, comments etc. would be appreciated even if it’s just to tell me I’m a total noob and obviously don’t have a clue what I’m doing. Example builds and advice on either equipment to get or how to decide for myself how to distribute my attributes would be greatly appreciated.

Most people go all power/crit, some go all condi.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to mention I’d reccomend carrying a set of your main damage armor and then a set of more defensive gear so you can play any situation with the same attributes.

Sword/warhorn, frost spirit and spotter are somewhat expected of you in dungeons/fractals. Any of the signets and muddy terrain are popular in WvW.

You’ll probably have a lot more than 33% chance to crit because it’s in the same line as your crit damage and rangers have extremely easy access to fury. It’s not uncommon to have 100% chance to crit.

I switch pets for every situation. Cats and drakes are popular for PvE and dogs are for WvW/PvP, but the special abilities of each pet are good to know and use them when the situation calls for it. You said you like your stalker most of the time, which is a solid choice, but make sure you swap pets regularly for the heal and whatever boons you’ve traited.
