Guild Wars 2

Ok, I have been playing a ton of WvWvW. I tried to go precision/crit damage type build and found myself getting killed before I really knew what was happening. At this point I am a mix of Crit Damage/Precision/Toughness/Vitality. Not sure if its right but I am living long enough to get some shots off.

Traits are
30: III, VIII, XI
25: II, X
15: IV

Again not sure how right those are but yea. I have looked at a few WvW builds to be honest and my traits do not seem very different from those.

Now pets I am clueless as to which ones to use. ATM I am running around with a Cat(Dies fast) and my Wolf for the heal.

Skills atm and usually are:
Healing Spring
Signet of Hunt
Signet of Stone
Quickening Zephyr
Rampage as One/Entangle

Weapons ATM:
Short Bow – Feels a little underwhelming in certain situations
Long Bow – Generally use this during Sieges or zerg fests for the AoE.

I have been hearing a few rangers saying I should be using a GS but not one has said why so I have not even looked at one yet. If anyone can elaborate on if GS is better than bow please do let me know. Ok thats all my info… I think. If I missed something that you need to help me thank you. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, what is your place of comfort in WvW?
1. Running with the Zerg.
2. Running with 5 man team.
3. Running solo.

You need to realize where you find yourself the most at. Its really important to adapt your build in this regard. Depending on your world, you may find yourself doing a little bit of everything.

If you do a lot of zerging, high DPS may be the way to go in order to support your zerg better. Try to be a little militant about it, archers are supposed to support and damage enemies from afar in large groups, while staying safely behind the front lines.

In my case, although I found myself in zergs I was more oftenly involved anywhere between 1 vs 1 to 5 vs 5 fights, constantly and everytime before or after I reached any keep or any zerg.

That is why variants of Beast Master builds are highly recommended for WvW situations. It provides you with survivability and it allows your pet to be your foot soldier. It requires much stronger pet micromanagement skills, but it pays off. Actually someone just posted what is my favourite variant of the Beast Master build and it is geared towards WvW, it’s linked here:

Now you may adapt it according to your likes, I personally prefer to trade a bit of power for condition damage, using torch for the aoe fire which works great vs thiefs. Keep in mind that Wolf is the best pet to use in WvW and Jaguar as well, but they are only as good as you are.

Which server are you in? I am part of one of the biggest guilds (BLUE) in Devona’s rest, our guild leader is a commander who is in love with WvW and runs a group everyday, so you could benefit a lot from us. Besides I can teach you some ranger tricks that I learned in WvW.

First off your build is bad and you need to change it . As of this moment the ranger still has the worst attack coefficients that turn power into weapon damage . The marksmanship trait line is also the worst line .

There are two ways to effectively play the ranger at the moment, and both ways maximize the only comparitive advantage the class has , inbuilt versatility of the pet .

I would suggest going the trapper , shaman, catsassin or beastmaster bunker route . There are builds out there, but if you need help with any of those, feel free to PM me .

The Catsassin build looks really interesting. My concern is I generally run with a zerg. So I am not sure how much use it will get. Zergs are so darn chaotic, while these builds require so much micro management that it seems to me most people would be dead before I could really do much. But I guess there is no real way to know till I try it. There is that old saying. Don’t knock it till you try it… or something like that.

Ok have been playing with the Catsassin build all day. And while I do decent with it, I just dont like it. I actually find it rather sad and very unfun to play ranger when my pet is doing more damage than me…. I always thought the ranger should be more 70/30 damage in favor of the ranger.
