Just did a few hours in PvP and added Hide in Plain Sight. I don’t recall it ever going off. What are the mechanics behind it and how do you know it’s up ?

Thanks

Hide in Plain Sight ends if the player moves or goes back into combat. Chances are the reason you didn’t see it proc is because when you were CC’ed you were either moving and as it proc’d you moved and it ended or you were CC’ed while you were attacking, and it ended upon your next attack.

I don’t find it for any usefulness to me, whatsoever.

It helps sometimes. Usually works when your knocked down, knock back, stun or any kind of CC from an enemy. It’s a small chance of escape if you need it.

The only thing that I would argue with this trait is its duration. It’s too short. Other than that it’s a good trait to have for survivability.

But it doesn’t make sense how a ranger can disappear out of thin air just because of an opposing CC.

Isn’t that something you would expect from a thief?

It’s a 3 second stealth, and you can move or attack without it breaking the stealth, it’s just a fairly short duration.

Applies camouflage when you are dazed, knocked down, launched, pushed back, or stunned. This effect cannot trigger more than once every 30 seconds.

I think I prefer shared anguish over that trait. It doesn’t trigger quite as frequently but it’s much more reliable at getting you out of jams.

Hide In Plain Sight needs to be an active ability in my opinion. Just make it have a long CD.

One of the issues I have with Hide In Plain Sight is the duration of the stealth. Most of the effects that trigger the stealth will last for most or all of the stealth’s duration, making it effectively useless. In PvE, the monster that triggered the trait will simply aggro you again when the stealth wears off, and in PvP, any competent player will simply keep throwing attacks at the spot where you disappeared.

Try using it with Shared Anguish and you’ll notice how much better it is. Without SA it’s rather worthless, but together it’s actually pretty good for dropping target and escaping burst.

Helps if if the first shot is a stun or knock back and you’re not ready for it but how often does that happen. Looks neat but rather useless. We do need to help in the trait field to many are junk or for pets.

I have to disagree that it’s useless, but to each their own. I run with it in sPvP and it helps out a lot. I’m debating on whether or not to run with it in WvW, but I haven’t tested it enough to really know if I like it or not; it would probably help if I joined an organized guild.

May be handy for small skirmishes and scouting missions? Again, haven’t tested it enough in WvW. Definitely handy in PvE and sPvP though, I will stand by that fact.

I really like Hide in Plain Sight in both PvP and PvE.

For PvP its an obvious stealth if you intend to run away or ambush again after being CC’d. Its also just great because it breaks your opponents’ target lock on you (ie if they had you selected as a target before, they don’t now). This messes up any followup attack they might have been planning after they smacked you around. Any sort of trip-up you can make your opponent do its a good thing in PvP. Take the initiative!

In PvE its awesome as an “aggro dump,” despite the lack of a traditional aggro table. If you’re getting pounded by a mob and it knocks you around, you’ll go into stealth and it will move on to another target or party member. Sucks to be that other guy but great for you!

I was JUST about to ask of these two Traits went together – the way its written I wasn’t sure if it wound trigger, since the effect is passed on the the pet. Sounds like “yes, it is and yes, it also fires”.

With both traits, your pet eats the CC and both of you go invis for around 2-3 seconds. The trick is that one timer is about 1/3 longer than the other; one being 60s CD while the other is 90s CD. You get the best effect the very first time you’re KD/KB/etc., and then each time after that they somewhat alternate until enough time passes for both of them to reset without being triggered.

It’s really handy. The 2-3 seconds isn’t enough make any largely impressive escape attempts but it is enough to cause your enemy to drop target and then have to kittenget you. In team fights it’s especially effective since they don’t have that kind of time and to waste.

In WvW I decided to take the reduction in survival skill CDs though, and use Shared Anguish instead of the Hide since I’m usually not in the front lines anyway.

Edit: Just noticed deepwinter gave a pretty good explaination—the only problem is that without one the other is really “meh”, especially Hide in Plain Sight since you still take the full effect and it isn’t hard to guess where your invisible body has been flung too; not to mention you’re usually still CC’d by the time the stealth fades.
