Hyjaxx's Re-Port331 ( The new hotness!)
i tried your build for 4 days now (also ran faux sheaux for like 3 weeks prior to that) and i have to admit that yeah it is indeed strong but i don’t find altruism rune THAT good. Yes it’s good and all but i’ve been thinking of switching for undead and that would mean 1800 condi damage with stacks. That would help a lot against some classes.

did any of you lot read this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Blatant-speed-Hack-Abuse-with-video-evidence
apparently the 00331 build is hacking, haha idiot.
its seems people don’t read patch notes before crying hack
Nice build by they i like it for small roam groups
I’ve gone back to a 02203 build for solo with some knights pieces, playing around with companions might
Ahhhh, yeah i forgot to add that I pulled corruption onto a secondary weapon to add stacks then switch to my primary set. I dont die too often so really only need to toss the wep on a few times a night.
Nice trick!
Alright, another night of testing in the books…and this one was a doozie!
I had changed things up a bit from the OP link and tried out Apoth Armor with Earth runes, trying to take advantage of the magnetic aura, after testing thoroughly ive deducted that it isnt the way to go.
But now i did find an amazing way to keep prot up, and gained a new trick up my sleeve!
I went back to my Original Settlers Armor ,and tried out Rune of the Grove…and WOW! what fun! the protection uptime is nice and the 50% on hit to root is amazing! (cool down is a lil long..but it is super powerful so i get it) people running stood no chance at all! hit em and BANG! root! ..if they got out id hit em with entangle and it was a short evening from there!
Im going to do some more testing with ideas but at this point i think its safe to say that the OP setup with Altruism is amazing for group based play, and im still working on a super viable armor/rune setup for solo roamers.
thanks again for reading!

Too bad there’s no real easy way to get the settlers gear becAuse ss is contested and a ghost town again.
You fought “A” d/d ele. I play best of their class both in pvp and wvw. Don’t get me started on your little fight you had with one d/d elementalist. No offense, you won’t win against a well played d/d ele like amyrlin serane as a ranger in WvW, no matter what build you put against it.
Like I said, it’s a shame we’re not facing DH as I could line up 10 people to duel you , and it’ll end with you coming back to the forums and saying a couple things along the lines of ‘this build won’t work in 1on1 situations with good players’. I hate to burst this little bubble you got where you’re fighting kitten roamers and calling the build good… It’s the same with faux’s build , all survivability no damage against someone who can cleanse well. You take the conditions out of the picture, you got nothing. The only class that can provide a GOOD d/d ele with condi pressure CONSISTENTLY is an engineer anmd MAYBE just MAYBE a necro now, but not ranger. Sorry =(
Things you need to beat a truly good d/d ele and not the trash you played against in WvW:
1. Extreme burst – Shatter mesmer burst/Phantasm hybrid burst with condition duration for immobs
2. Extreme Condi pressure w/ immobs – Any good engi with a condi build
Is 1v1 a thing? Because the way ANET is making ranger build, ranger is dependent on other professions being there. I think you need to look at it from a 5v5 perspective. Or you can do your duels or whatever, just don’t expect it to be balanced in any meaningful way. Of course, this game isn’t balanced in any meaningful way so what am I saying? >_<
you dont need over 1800 toughness, diminishing returns and all
Might give this a shot since it really doesn’t seem to necessitate new gear for me (already running Apoth arm/weps and Set trinkets).
Killian Darkwood(Rng), Kaalia Darkheart(Guard), Avacyn Darkmind(Mes):Maguuma
you dont need over 1800 toughness, diminishing returns and all
Got any good charts or something to link to regarding this? I haven’t taken the time to look up anything other than the damaging stats really and just go by “the more the merrier” when it comes to toughness in pvp.

I thought there would have been a “sexy time” in there somewhere.
For all that is following this thread and is currently running this build and is on FA or Dragonband, would anyone want to setup a friendly duel behind the Windmill? I’m on Crystal Dessert and would love to see this build in action.
The Never Ending Repertoire of Ranger Builds
Salt of the Earth {SALT} Crystal Desert© ~~Dragon Rank~~
Diminishing returns regarding toughness is really approaching a grey area.
Yes, each additional point of toughness will give you slightly less of a reduction in damage. However, that is a misleading way of looking at it.
Take base defense ratings of every armor type.
- Light – 920
- Medium – 1064
- Heavy – 1211
I’ll use light armor as an example. Add 920 toughness, and you will reduce the direct damage of an attack by a factor of two. Add 1840 toughness, and you will reduce the direct damage of an attack by a factor of three. Say the damage would normally be 3000 assuming you had only 920 armor with no toughness. With 920 toughness (1840 armor), you will take 1500 damage. With 1840 toughness (2760 armor), you will take 1000 damage.
Add 920 more toughness for 2760 toughness (3680 armor), and you will take 750 damage. I know this isn’t viable, but we’ll use it just for argument’s sake.
The step down in damage for each 920 toughness is less and less than before. People see this and say “diminishing returns”. However, they don’t look at how these all work as ratios. Just because you take less damage with each attack doesn’t necessarily mean the armor is less effective. Each step down directly translates to an entire extra attack needed to accomplish the same results.
If you can think about it this way, you aren’t really getting the perceived diminishing returns. With each constant “chunk” of toughness added, a definable and constant proportion of an opponents attack is reduced. Doubling your armor will require the opponent to hit you twice for the same damage as he would have hit with your original armor.
So while it’s not possible to double your armor rating more than once because of that upper limit on gear, if you were to theoretically keep doubling it, the amount of damage reduced would be less and less, but it would still require the opponent to hit you twice as often for each time you do so.
This means toughness does not give diminishing returns. Diminishing returns would imply that each point you add into toughness will give you less and less of a result, but that isn’t the case when you think about it in terms of fractions.

Still running my old RRR build because why not
i can tell you that by “seat of the pants” i can feel the difference between 1800 and 2100 toughness…in a major way.
and yes. you cant base a builds viability on 1v1 fights when thats very rarely the case. Although you should be able to hold your own until support arrives or your foe makes a mistake. and I think my Re-port331 does a great job at that.
This morning 2 guys were fighting and at about 3/4 hp each. i was able to rush in, Entangle,Bon Fire, tail swipe, Ltn Breath and both guys were down. I then set my wolf on the one while i spiked the other, which revived the guy my wolf was on…the wolf knocked down and i finished him off . the flexibility of this build is what makes it so amazing for rangers everywhere!
and again, lots of testing tonight so be sure and stay tuned! and if you have questions feel free to guest to DH and hit me up, my Rangers name is Whoajaxx.

Hyjaxx,
Just wanted to thank you for posting your build. I’m relatively new to GW2 and really enjoyed playing BM Ranger. I had just purchased the final items for my P/V/T set when the patch came out with the short bow nerf. I was more than a little bummed as I really like the short bow. So I hit the forums and tried some new builds in the Mist and then I came across your build. Despite it not having a bow which I really like about ranger…I’ve had a ton of fun playing a variation of your build. I made a couple changes to suit my playing style which are…
Dwayna Runes…I usually roam around the BL’s with a thief buddy of mine and so I find the extra heal bonus more helpful than the fury/might/boon of altruism runes.
I switched off hands so that I am running A/D S/T. I found that this allows better use of Stalker/Serpents strike as I am not using them as close to together before switching weapons in combat. In addition Bonfire has become much more effective in that I use it once I am in melee or forced to melee and it ticks for more on my target. Versus if I were running with A/T I would be using a ranged and likely be backing off my target to use my ranged weapon. Additionally when I use Bonfire with sword as my main weapon I am able to use Monarch’s Leap as an additional dodge and fly back in and proc the combo on Bonfire. (Fireshield)
For utility I am using Signet of the Hunt instead of Protect Me. Again this goes back to the play style. I usually roam with my Thief buddy so Signet comes in handy because we are running around grabbing camps instead of with a full party/zerg. I really like the shout but it just comes down to not having someone to speed buff me.
Wilderness Survival is Shared Anguish/Off Hand Training/Empathic Bond
Nature Magic is Nature Bounty/Nature Protection/Strength of Spirit (the last one is sort of a compromise due to play style)
Beastmastery is Commanding Voice.
For pet I am using Snow Leopard and Wolf. Again it has more to do with play style. I like the drake but the chilled on snow leopard is very nice when it’s just me and a Thief.
And that’s about it. Once again man thanks a lot for posting your build. This has been a ton of fun to play and I enjoy it (almost) as much as playing with short bow. Like I said before I’m fairly new to GW2 so I appreciate any suggestions/modifications to what I’m doing.
Feel free to hit me up anytime I’m on DH as well.
HawksEyes is my Ranger.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if a particular server has all the towns under control? Would love to guest to get these weapons but don’t want to just take a shot in the dark.
I am assuming once the dragon bash and the pirates event is complete, unless we get another living story, that people might venture back to southsun to kill the queen. Only time will tell.
Great build by the way.
Ok guys another change to try for the guys that run more solo roaming , I’ve been testing rune of the grove still, and I like it much better then rune of earth, and you still get the protection uptime.
Also,I’m going to do some research on obtaining the settlers gear for you guys because it’s worlds better then apothecary for our purposes.
Lots more test results coming tonight so stay tuned!

I actually trying to find a way to gearing up for settler armor one.
Now that Southsun is pretty much abbandon, I find gearing up for settler gear is pretty hard. It’s like impossible to do the event alone not to mention you have to capture all four when u want to buy the gear
Ok another night of testing in the books. and alot was learned!
lastnight was spent messing with Pet AI and getting timing down and here is what i figured out ..some of it is truly awesome! ( this is using Drake/Wolf set)
- with drake spam f2 as its running towards mob and he will cast breath at max distance During this time drop Bon Fire/Guard on top of your enemy and the drake will run right over and blast finisher immediately (this method also works for water field and a huge AoE heal)
- while fighting you can cast guard on top of an enemy, mid cast you can swap pets to wolf and he will fire his KD immediately ,then pop fear right after for a huge chunk of CC
Also, while running my Re-Port331 you may have noticed that thieves are no longer a huge threat regardless of build..but a good thief will cause a fight to go on forever. So if you are being grieved by a thief switch from your drake to the Immob spider. All the poison/6-7 seconds of immob really knocks the wind out of the thief , rushing them into running or making a mistake so you can go in for the kill.
For the People who dont care for the group oriented Altruism Rune , my Official stamp goes on Rune of the Grove for the small group/roaming Re-Port331’ers
It gives great uptime on Protection and the Root it offers really pressures people into blowing cooldowns..all in all i would have to say..its definitely sexy time!
still doing some more testing on a couple different food/nourishment combos and some gem/jewel swaps in trinkets for an idea i have. As always stay tuned for more exciting news!

thanks for adding it bud! and so you know. its not so much a work in progress. I have my Re-Port331 w/altruism thats focused towards small man skirmish. Then the Re-Port331R for Roamers
The 331R is where ive been doin the testing to find the optimum gear/runes/sigils/weps ect to give people the same awesome feeling from the group based build over to the Roaming version. and by the time im done with testing . im hoping that people would be able to carry a second set of armor ect and when they decided they want to roam as opposed to small group skirmish they can just swap out the Armor/Rune setup and go for broke!
I truly feel the Re-Port331 and 331R can be the Rangers go to build for experienced WvW rangers everywhere.
Still lots more testing to come! so stay tuned!

Thanks for the suggestion on Rune of Grove. I use that now and switched Signet of Hunt to Protect Me. After the switch I realize that the advantage to Protect me is way better even if it means running from camp to camp takes a little longer. The added root on Grove is very nice.

Q: Thoughts on Signet of Stone for this build?
Hi SubAce , A couple things on your comment. Firstly the idea behind having guard is multifaceted. Having guard allows the Re-Port331 and 331R to take advantage of the Pet4 abilities which adds a huge amount of support and viability to our setup with our only noted blast finisher. Secondly the traited guard is the only reliable way to keep 100 uptime on swiftness and Regeneration for yourself and party members. Also with very little in BM the protection given is what keeps our pets viable in skirmish and Roaming situations.
now about using Protect me , ive thought about doing some testing but decided it was against the nature of the build , as using this during a fight would take your pet out of action for 1min. and thats dangerous.
You asked about signet of stone, our Build here has plenty of Toughness and i dont know if i could find a situation where this ability would warrant a 7,8,9 slot. Especially when youre losing your Regen Signet for it.
I hope ive addressed your questions and please feel free to keep the advice, questions and criticism going..its what makes our builds better and minds fresh to change!

I think your build is really clever, but I just can’t get past my hatred of the ground targetting mechanic. I find it really disruptive to the flow of combat. I’m also not sure that in practical terms how much the perma regen afforded by the shout helps.
I’ve compared your build to variants of Xorus’ and haven’t really noticed much of a difference in survivability for myself or my pets. It does seem like Xorus’ version is “somewhat” burstier, though I find the Keen Edge trait (in MM) a bit unreliable.
Have you compared your build to Xorus’ (more of a traditional bunker that doesn’t rely on the shout mechanic)? I’m wondering whether my results are a byproduct of my annoyance and lack of skill using the Guard shout.
well something to remember, that once the battle starts your traits will keep regen tickin. so you really only need to use guard when youre wanting a blast finisher in your fire or water fields or for a reposition on a runner ect.
in regards to Regen Numbers , with this build regardless if its Re-Port331 or 331R the total HPT is over 500 so its like a mini troll ungent going around the clock.
im not a big fan of ground casting either. but you can always do the option in the menu for fast cast.it works well.

Just checked it out, Its nice to see the Ranger being noticed on the battlefield. Ive had a ton of people guest over to darkhaven to talk to me the past few days and its been amazing to listen to their excitement and answer their questions.
As far as my current Condition based Re-Port331 and 331R goes i feel those are set up to the best of their abilities. which is truly amazing. So lastnight i switched out to a Direct Damage Version of the Re-Port331R to do some extensive testing for those folks who love the build, but condition damage isnt up their alley.
Ill post the Re-Port331R DD set up this evening after i fine tune it a little more. I can say that with me just diving into it with GS +S/A i saw some definite potential.
A thief rolled up on me and my Roots Bound him I then used A5 which took him down to 1/3hp, he tried to tele out and i used A4 which pulled him back to me, Wolf Knocked down, I switched to GS for gs2,gs5 and to finish him off a gs3 as his tried to run away… So it seems the Re-port is great no matter the damage source. but none the less, i want to get the testing in!

OK So ive gotten into some testing of the DD version of the Re-Port331R ( ive done the testing on the 331R because i dont feel the DD version is viable in the group based Re-Port331)
So im running the same build trait wise, All clerics gear and weapons. with GS + S/A
Sigil wise im running a Hydro on the GS an Energy on the sword and the Power stack on the Axe.
The first thing i noticed with the Direct Damage as opposed to the Condi version on the build is that you need to stay in their face quite a bit more as you dont have the Conditions doing the work for you while youre evading ect. this can lead to being focus fired a bit more.
The rotation ive found to be useful with the DD is opening up with A4 , Entangle, s3,A5, GS Swap to gs5,gs2 and gs3 to finish..( this is with a lightning breath mixed in and/or a wolf KD if needed, but NO FEARING)
im going to do another night of testing on this , but did want people to know that it is a viable choice for the Re-Port331R. So stay tuned for much more info this evening. and as always if you have questions please feel free to pm or guest to DH and talk to me directly.

So how badly would rabid armor mess up a build like this? I know healing power is important, but I’m very cautious about losing my high crit rate. Would I be able to get away with settler trinkets and weapons?
In my experience, you want at least 1000 healing power with regen builds. You wouldn’t get that with trinkets I don’t think. Are you trying to proc companion’s might? I’m pretty sure Anet’s intention was to seperate that buff from the regen builds. Normally I have very low crit chance with regen apothecay type builds.
Running just settlers/apothecary trinkets wouldnt even get close to what you need for this build to be viable. and i wouldnt worry too much about your crit rate/ %
I promise you you can take whatever crit build youre currently running and the Re-Port331r will outshine it in every facet.
when i first started playing the Ranger and people were like "hey try healing " i rolled my eyes but once you run this build or a Condi-genBM you will never turn back.
Since ive been wvw’n with my ranger in this configuration i have destroyed every ranger ive fought in under 12 seconds and ive fought atleast 30-40 of them heads up.
Just give it a go, i promise youll be happier then a pig in poop!

Really I’ve been trying to proc bleeds with my sigil of earth and that one trait. But seeing as low damage I do even with a near constant 80% crit rate, it may not be all that useful. At least, not when I can just go full traps and melt everything.
I was trying to stray away from my previous all traps build as it was pretty boring, but I’m positive I wasn’t playing it right. It was a lot of bunkering and plinking with my shortbow, basically super boring. This build seems rather fun, and if anything I don’t see any reason not to drop my critical rate and power. Considering how little I get from those stats, I can see why people in this forum have been hyping healing power and condition damage. Not much else we can do I guess.
Of course now I need to get enough cash to buy some more fine transmutation gems. That stuff isn’t cheap (to me). Looking at it now I’ve been buying carrion weapons too. Oh well, those will be the last I change, if I can get my hands on settler weapons anyway. I might as well. Considering how badly power scales with rangers, I don’t see stuff like rampagers or knights doing that much more damage. And even then damage isn’t the key. I’m gonna miss my crits, but at least now I have a clear view for my ranger after this patch. Thanks Hyjaxx!
Hjaxx,
(And I’m hesitant to post this since I already posted a thread asking for help)
But is this build at all applicable to a shortbow/longbow set up? Or maybe even a half build load out with something else as secondary? The build interests me but I really enjoy bows.

Well if you wanted to you could run a Shoort Bow instead of the A/T …but you would be losing the plethora of conditions, fire field and more. to be honest the Bows are a joke, Unless you just really like the way they look and are willing to lose effectiveness then i would roll the A/T S/D that the build calls for.

I disagree, I find having perma regen even with 0 healing power to be of huge benefit too and preferable for example to have dwayna runes with only the built in healing power rather than anything else in pvp aside for possibly the builds and runes that focus on protection.
To be honest regen and signet of the wild gives about 200h/s alone with no healing power at all that is quite alot actually and gives pretty good staying power for someone with alot of toughness it’s well worth it in my opinion even if you focus all other stats on damage wichever it may be.
Ah, good call Manekk. I’ll work on other builds with Nature’s Voice to see what I can come up with.
Edit: Not bc hyjaxx build is bad (hyjaxx build is awesome), but instead, bc I can :p

Ah pretty good example would be a heavy crit build using dwayna runes, signet of the wild and omnom pies, you’ll have a crapload of selfhealing with that despite not having any healing power at all probably just as much as the apothecary builds do if not even more atleast aslong as you can stay on the offensive, the strength in the high healing power regen builds is that you can disengage/pillar hump and the like and just passivly regen alot if you have to but like I said if you can definetly make good use of regen even without healing power.
This is the one I was thinking to use, I don’t have all the cavalier trinkets yet so I was using my old celestial ones mixed with knights but anyway this what I had in mind and it’s a diffrent one using the shout trait, exellent power damage , exellent pet damage from might and fury etc all the boons are virtually permanent, -65% conditions etc it’s just a great build imo not as strong regen of course but focusing more on doing alot of damage and it does do a truckload of damage you have great burst with this, I can see it working amazingly for some people even though I didn’t stick with it myself simply cause of how clunky it felt to use guard, it drove me nuts to use it so I dropped 5 points in nature for bm and crit bleeds for cats and went back to dwayna runes.

Should really call this build the Tough Beast. Yesterday I did some WvW for the first time with this build. I am a noob. I am not very good. I am not even very mediocre!
Anyway, I was exploring by myself and ran into a guardian. I honestly would have died in 2 seconds if I was running my PvE setup. What really stood out for me about the Tough Beast is it let me live long enough to learn and adjust during the fight. I truly think the guardian thought he could one-shot me and he never even came close. It was a long fight which gave me time to catch on to his tactics and adjust so that I actually won!
This is a great build for noobs in WvW. Lets you live long enough to actually learn something.
