Hi all,
As the title suggests, I can’t find the right build for me for WvW. Since I’m terrible at making builds, I’m just going to ask you guys for one; or at least help building my own. I generally run around and run havoc groups, but I do spend some time in zerg situations. I’ve just recently tried a Cleric’s build, but I found it slightly difficult to use, and it was not the role in groups I had in mind. Simply put, I’m looking for a power build centered around the Longbow and Sword / X (preferably warhorn) and a build that isn’t pet reliant or a /complete/ glass cannon (a little Zerker’s is fine).

Ive found a hybrid build with rampager’s soldier and rabid gear works the best for me in wvw but to each their own.
So one build I tripped on might be interesting to you. I ended up moving away from it because survivability isn’t quite what I wanted (and I want somewhat ridiculous survivability). It did give (relatively) great damage while retaining a lot of survivability, though. Note that I do not mean to imply this can compete with a zerker build on DPS.
10/0/30/30/0, cleric gear, ranger runes, mango pies. Ranger runes are important. Longbow & sword/horn would work fine. I’d recommend starting with healing spring, guard (required), muddy terrain (for zerg fights), signet of the wild (required), and rampage as one.
You have good toughness, decent healing power, and plenty of condition clears. You will need to keep your pet out of serious combat (ranger runes always apply even on a defeated pet, but your condition clears do not). It is important to keep regen up 100% of the time, both for the regen and 5% damage boost.
The interesting thing about this build is that you enter a fight applying vulnerability and +30% damage. You will not be pulling down bunker builds with this, but anything less will have to take you seriously. You are definitely not a glass cannon in this build, but you probably can’t run front line in a zerg.
The build I run now, btw, is 0/0/10/30/30, complete focus on being tanky. I’m filling a role in a group, though. It doesn’t do quite enough damage to have a lot of fun roaming.
What traits do you go for?
I find that for a ranger you cannot use that same build for Roam/Havoc and Zerging.
I use a 0/0/30/30/10 “guard” build with a mix of PVT and Cleric’s for Zerging (A/T, A/W)
and i use a 0/10/10/0/30 “Companions Might” with a mix of Rabid and Cleric’s for havoc. (SB, A/W)
and i use either that Companions Might build or a 0/0/30/10/30 (or 0/0/30/20/20) Cleric/Apothecary for solo. (SB or LB, S/D or S/W)
I feel that as a ranger we have a loot similar but slightly different build that are good and 1 thing but not so much another, unlike an an ele that sets to 0/10/0/30/30 and never needs to change, so you need to be constantly evolving.
