For those of you who have seen the image, the sylvari in the pic is not wielding a dagger. That item in her hand is actually a focus.

Yeah on closer inspection it’s totally a focus totem. I think sword focus is going to be the real deal.

It would be interesting to see another off-hand and if this elite spec is the pandering to the non-rangers ditching pet kitten I hope it isn’t the melee condi mainhand of my dreams. But it would be a bit bizarre for us to get another magical oriented specialisation, even if we are arguably the most magic inclined adventurer.

Considering how ranger off-hands go, we can expect the skills to be a 1200 range targetted attack and short range PBAoE. Though the dagger does somewhat break from that second one since stalker’s strike is a single target melee hit.

ah you mean the image from the traitline? no that’s definitely a dagger, you are seeing the handle of the weapon with the same animal style as the staff or the shoulders. Most daggers are hold up side down.

In any case the weapon in the traitline is a dagger although i don’t like those in the ranger.

It’s a dagger. If it’s the traitline image being referred to, don’t look at the image and guess. The first trait on each one of those leaks has a weapon symbol. For the Ranger’s, it’s the one below. The sword weapon symbol is diagonal.

There is a valid reason for this, spellbreaker was the first elite specialization created so the dagger icon was build first and likely used as a placeholder.

Take a close look at the actual picture (I can’t repost it do to forum rules):

1.) If it was a dagger, why wouldn’t the weapon’s form be accentuated. There is no blade and the outline of the object resembles many of the focuses in the game. There is no way that is a dagger.

2.) The item held is in the right hand, which is traditionally the offhand slot since all GW models wield mainheand weapons in the left.

3.) A class that manipulates spirit energy from pets, it would be fitting for the object held to be a totem of some sort.

4.) Compare the design to things like the Crimson Lion focus and the Krytan Focus, the shape and aesthetic is very similar.

Doubt it. Like the first elite spec leaks, the only placeholders used were GW1 skill icons for the heals, utilities, and elites.

1) The blade is under the wrist in the image. Don’t ask me why the artist didn’t accentuate the weapon’s form. It seems they were more interested to accentuate the hilt design, which isn’t uncommon.

2) Main hand weapons are held in the right hand. Unless they wanna try something different like the leak of Necromancer’s “Scourge” spec that is supposedly a main-hand torch. Then by all means, let’s have that main-hand focus.

3) Would it be fitting? Yes. You know what would also be fitting? A class that is proficient in bows to fire a shortbow further than they can throw an axe.

Don’t depend on thematics, lore, or what would make sense when it comes to GW2 anymore. It’s all over the place as far as consistency is concerned.

4) I’m not going to reference or use cherry-picked designs from other weapon skins to make a case. Especially when we have staff skins that look like pole arms and foci that are whips, mug of ale, fan, and a model ship in a bottle.

Why would they have got to the point where they have finished the trait lines and trait/skill icon designs for every new spec, except possibly the ele, and not changed the Ranger weapon icon from a place holder?

I’ve seen the image. I’ve seen it again. And i don’t see a focus there, really. Seems more a “tribal-bone-weapon”, more similar to a dagger than a focus.
Also, right now, we have 2 main hand and 4 off hand weapons. Focus is tipically an off hand weapon, so, i really doubt we will get another off hand. Focus main hand? Nah. How the hell can be an autoattack from…a focus?
Also the icon is clearly a dagger. But we will see

You’re basing your entire argument on over stylized art while trying to hand wave away obvious evidence to the contrary.

You sound like the people who were absolutely convinced the Daredevil art was just a thief with an insanely long rifle that he was holding wrong.

1. The whole lower arm area is muddled by what appears to be some kind of eagle gauntlets that will be our “class armor part” as well as a bird (because ranger) and the trait wheel itself. It could also very well be a hand scythe like the Dragon Kama but held correctly. Based on the image alone, it could just as easily be some kind of mace like Brahm’s.

2. Every PC is right handed in this game. When do you ever pull out a sword on a ranger and hold it in your left hand?

3. Dagger could also work just as well. Either as a “sacrificial ceremonial dagger” or as a bestial “rip enemies apart with my hands” kind of weapon.

4. Again, muddied art work where the artist did a terrible job of placing the weapon front an center like every other class does.

Also, what purpose would another offhand even serve? We already have a support, utility, power dps, and condi offhand. There’s essentially no niche left for it to fill. We DO, however, need a power mainhand that is focused on pure damage without sacrificing dps for evades as well as a condition melee option.

People got hyped with HoT thinking they are getting spears (on land) based on one of the artworks where the artist had taken liberties when she drew some characters holding their weapons. The artwork can be misleading, don’t get too hyped.

this right here is what we need as Rangers, we never truly have a burst main hand and I think dagger will fill that role. together with physical attacks/ fist attacks would be nice combination (wishful thinking)

Success is my only option, failure is not.
