Hi Runeblade, i don’t want to say it but i’ll.
You are not experienced, that’s why you demand this changes to stay.
Please learn to use your pet. And you’ll see that even with F2 smoke field, you CAN use assault on demand.

Smoke field has a cast time.
By the time I finish casting Smokefield, the enemy already escaped. Smoke assault is instant and reliable.
I am still not sold.

After getting used to how Smokescale works now, I really like it. At first it felt akward because I was so used to have a smokefield on demand. You can actually take your time to build up might stacks on your Smokescale before it uses Smoke Assault which is pretty nice.
Smoke Assault will most likely be on longer cooldown if it would be changed back to where it was before, which is not something I want to happen.
Both mistsim and Skullface? Team assault pulling out the heavy guns

That is a common argument but it is actually not true that this is as good as having smoke assault as f2. Having it on f2 makes it actually usable a lot more proactively and especially with skills like signet of the wild, strength of the pack and sic’em. First time I actually feel like actively using my pet to kill people (aka feel like a ranger). I actually wait for them to dodge/use their evades and the let my pet burst like I would do it with my own skills.
I can see why people want the smoke field and I would also take the pre change smokescale without hestitation but at the same time smoke assault should be controllable aswell.
Best scenario would be if they finally made 2 skills per pet controllable (f2, f3, old f3 as toggle of f1) or if they created like a “Red Smokescale” with Assault f2 and “Grey Smokescale” with the Smokefield f2.
You really can’t make a decision like this without kittening off somebody
The game offers a lot of variations through combos and people love those. Having control over the smoke cloud gives it a sense of more strategical thinking, especially for hardcore tacticians and perfectionists.
imo it is only a matter of time before they make the switch. One good enough reason for that is the fact people started bringing it up more and more and that signals, that something isn’t right.
When you think of it, having a tactical advantage with a well-executed smoke field makes the game a lot more interesting than another dull fast kill ability. Dull, because let’s be honest, it’s just a series of slashes to take down an enemy quick, nothing fancy, and personally – while at one hand I enjoy how fast my enemy goes down – on the other I actually feel sorry for them.
In other words, it’s way too easy to be fun.
My smokescale with 25 might and 8s quickness agrees.
The reason I like it is because I can chase down enemies that are trying to escape. With a smokescale, I can simply have my pet burst down their low hp as they try to run. It is an assassin pet.
If there is to be a on-demand smokefield, put it on some other pet.
You are fully aware that the pet has this ability, on a shorter timer, all the time with it’s original state as generic attacks . . . right? That is before this change? So, in essence, you’re asking for the pet to be what it was before . . . but better than it is now.
The smokescreen is now casting without your say-so and denying you that burst without any control from you. Again, you know this right?
Therein lies the reason rangers/druids want the smokescale back the way it was: more control over the smokescreen and more teleporting-burst DPS.

I am aware. But it will not use Smoke assault when I need it most. I don’t need Smokescale to use smoke assault when the enemy is on the cap point and is healthy. I need smokescale to use smoke assault when they have low hp and running away and is out of LOS.

HI Firelysm. Ive played ranger since the first day of the beta and I play the game daily. I dare you to say that im not experienced. I have also played shout ranger builds for that amount of time. I dare you to say that I don’t know how to use my pet.
The on demand might generation and the ability to preemptively buff your pet (sic em+heal as one then activate f2…or use the f2 to stack might and then heal as one to double it) is significantly more useful to me in PvP and WvW and most areas of PvE than the smokefield was. Not having a gimmicky stealth mechanic is something I can live with in return for reliable pet dps.
Edit: Not to mention that this is the ONLY PET IN THE ENTIRE GOD kitten GAME that can actually keep up with a target. Ill be kitten ed if I lose control of that functionality without a REALLY good reason.

Here’s what really confuses me about this arguement…
The Smokescale does not do good damage outside of Smoke Assault. The only reason to swap to the SS is to use Smoke Assault, right? I mean it has its knockdown, but that is available in the same way regardless of what F2 we have. Smoke Assault is the first skill that the Smokescale would use upon swapping in its old iteration. Are you guys just camping Smokescale? That doesn’t seem very efficient.
Having Smoke Cloud on auto means that you will lose more damage, because your pet is wasting pathing time putting down smokes you probably don’t even want, putting it even further behind the target.
With Smoke Cloud on F2, your pet will instantly trigger Smoke Assault (the only real reason to have the pet active in its current state) meaning that you can still line up your might stacking/burst combos perfectly just by pet swapping.
Camp a better DPS pet until you want your burst > swap to SS + use your CDs of choice > WHaO… it’s that easy. Then you also have an on demand, useful field that you can use to escape/re-position/stop a stomp/stack party stealth that will not result in an overall damage loss by being triggered by AI automatically, at pointless times.
What am I missing here? Not trying to sound pedantic, I just honestly don’t get it. I have used the current SA F2 as well, and I agree that it has some value, but I could do the exact same thing before except now I don’t have my smoke field.

I also prefer Smoke Assault on F2 as it is now and I’ve been playing Ranger since release.
Just remove the Combo Field from Smoke Cloud for the people who keep getting their fields covered with it somehow.
