I love this profession
Well, my ranger was my first character I created and I leveled to 80. And I have the same feeling like you do: No matter what other class I create, somehow I find myself always coming back to my ranger, since its play style suits me the best..
Engineer is a cool class though, since it has the skills to get out of any situation. However, you don’t have a pet (like the ranger has) to take aggro away from you, so you’ll be kiting a lot more..
Necro on the other hand has some minions to keep the enemy busy while you remain ranged and hit it with conditions and stuff.. Bear in mind though that a necro wears light armour (Ok, they have a huge HP pool), so it isn’t built for soaking damage (normally)..

Well I don’t think I can answer this question at all, as it all depends on your playstyle. If you’re playing a trap Ranger, for instance, the Engineer’s grenade kit might have a similar feel.
The only way to really find out if Ranger really is the best profession for you is to try out the alternatives (as you were doing before.) If you keep coming back to the same profession; there’s no doubt about it.
Edit: the best advice I could give you is to play in whatever way you enjoy. It’s a game, and thus, meant for entertainment. Don’t force yourself to try everything if you’re content with the way you were playing before. If you later decide you want to switch around your playstyle, go nuts!

Whats funny is that my Wife mains a mesmer. She pugged COF P1 with four engis and she said it was as fast as running it with four wars (in terms of PuGs anyway).
I enjoy the warrior, and I’ve tried 6 of the other classes… but I still end up coming back to my ranger in the end despite the uber we-todd-ed AI controlled pet.
The way, the Ranger skills are arranged, you typically don’t have many thoughts about whether you should save skills for one of their 3-5 uses. The skills are pretty much straightforward and serve a specific purpose.
Playing a ranger is more about utilizing those tools and assembling them to something, which can do well in any situation, than about finding synergies in the side effects of skills to make a build work.
Actually, I love the way, those ranger skills are like a toolbox with a right tool for every situation, where I often times don’t need to think twice, “cause I could use aspect x of the skill later on” It’s a fluent playstyle, which still offers lots of customisation through pets.
The only class, which might come close customisation-wise is engineer, which can be built to be pretty much anything(oh god, I want a level 80 engi so much… Still lev 15 tho and levelling him is tedious) and the only class, which has this kind of straightforward on-demand skillset is the warrior, which offers little customisation and a rather brutish approach to things(my main is a hammer warrior
)
Dunno about necro, tho. Death shroud seems to have about the same on-demand-utility as generic ranger skills, put into a second skill bar with some gimmicks and traits attacked to it. Offers loads of options and seems to have good responsiveness, if you don’t try to get a minion build to work in chaotic group fights. Still, never really played engi or necro, so I can’t tell you much here.
Necro still seems to be the closest from the overall skill setup, unless you are a mindless bear+longbow autoattacker.
And about the other guy, who said, grenades might have a similar feel: No. Just no.
Playing ranger doesn’t cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
The only character I’ve ever leveled to 80 is a ranger. Funny enough it was the last profession I tried (well except necros, just can’t …). I didn’t want to make one because they were so common and I actually didn’t enjoy the GW1 ranger. Nevertheless, when I finally made one I just couldn’t stop. One thing that still has me hooked is just when I think I have figured it out I see a player find a new way to play it. Another is I can swap my pet out to adjust for group, new build or what ever I want. Need fury buff, come here red moa. Need knock downs, come here hyena. I wanna parade around with Flamingo Rex (my pink moa) because its amazingly cool, then so be it. For me, its a very flexible platform.
Lastly, its fun! Yeah, that’s right, I’m on a forum saying I play a profession because its fun – dps be kitten’d. So what ever you pick, play the one you enjoy.
See you in Tyria.

I like my ranger very much but I also find the necromancer to be awesome to play with, very versatile, can be very powerful and it’s the only profession that encourages you to kill stuff (to get life force)… yet with its limitations like any other profession.
