I'm starting to play a ranger just now
I don’t quite understand what you mean about the pet not making use of itself. For me, my pet crits for about 3k average, to upwards of 5-7k (maybe more) with the right party. I find that pretty useful.
If you really want to rely on your pet, grab traits that synchronize you and your pet. For example, in the Skirmishing trait line, there are traits that will increase your pet’s critical damage by 30% as well as heal on crits, and gain might on crits, a lot of “on crit” traits, come to think of it. In the BM line there are traits to give your pets unique effects like inflicting bleed on some pet autoattacks.
As for traits, the “Sic ’Em” trait is really useful for increasing your pet’s damage (40% damage and 40% movement speed increase), and works well with the 30% increased damage on crit trait.
Weapons also give buffs to your pets. For example, Sword 1 auto attack chain grants might to your pet, longbow 3 gives your pet swiftness (and stealths you), and shortbow 4 causes your pet to inflict bleeding. There may be a few more. More would be nice.
Pay attention to the skill UI. F1-4 is for commanding your pet. F2 is your pet’s special skill. If you don’t like your pet’s special skill or your pet is too squishy, go tame another one

keloorie, do you prefer to use power or conditions? Also, do you prefer to be a dps-y tank or a tank-y dps?
Try to tailor you pet use to what your doing. Bears are your tanks, use when you need your pet to soak up a lot of damage like from vets or champs. Drakes have a good health pool and do and aoe to grab agro, use when fighting against groups. Canines are great for general purpose (fern wolf is one of my favorite pets) and spiders for their cc (I don’t use spiders much). Felines and birds are your DPS pets, but they get really beat up in longer or heavy hitter fights.
Once you know the class of pet you want, decide which pet from that class by their F2 skill. Ex.: you decide you want 2 bears to swap for a champ fight. Do you want a black bear and murellow for their aoe’s because there are adds, or arctodus and polar bear for their single target F2 attacks.
Don’t forget to swap your pets if one is getting hammered. If your just running across a zone and don’t want to fight every mob you pass, put you pet in peace mode.
Some of the pets are not holding aggro since the patch and there have been reports of them dropping dead after 1 hit from bosses……I’m sure they will get around to fixing that eventually
Aden, I’m trying to use lightning reflex, sic’em as my skills, but really scratching my head for the last slot
Razor, I prefer playing as a power ranger XD
I’m planning to use a sword/warhorn + longbow ,but my very final goal is making my pet useful since he is usually getting ignored while my enemy is not getting punished by ignoring him.
Tyeme, I am looking foward to use a jaguar as a dps pet. But I don’t really have an idea about the other one, i might probably try a drake but the thing is, I don’t know should I place 40 in BM traits to boost up my pets’ attributes
Good questions. I find pet does most damage when ranger successfully debilitates and roots enemy. Most pets move pretty slow compared to opponents, so you can help them land their attacks by using skills, sigils, and utilities that root your target.
Ranger is designed with many snare abilities. It’s one of our best strengths. Try ice ranger build for fun sometime. It’s very deadly.
Illustrious Exhausted Primordial Legendary Druid, and Mesmer for fun

It really depends on your preference. Pets aren’t only used for dps/tanking.
Also remember: ALWAYS keep pets on passive. The first attack of some pets, such as spiders, canines, drakes, are always useful (immobilize, knockdown, blast finish)
Spiders – helps cover your conditions so its harder to cleanse. They also soft CC with immobilize. Also, since spiders do ranged attacks, by positioning yourself behind your spiders, you can use them as meat shields against projectiles.
Wolf – you can use it offensively or defensively. Either use it to keep people off you, or use it after you’ve stacked up conditions so your target has a harder time cleansing.
Drakes – Blast finishers (I think its a double blast finisher sometimes). Since I put my pet on passive, F1 usually triggers tailswipe -pretty useful with healing spring.
Those are my favourite pets by far
