If you could change one thing...
Honestly? Seeing as how most people in this thread have mentioned a number of the things I’d thought of, I’ll throw a something different into the pot.
I’d make all Ranger traps de-cloak any stealthed player that sets them off.
Valiantghost[CGC] – Sea of Sorrows
greatsword 2 and warhorn 4 as blast finishers
Greatsword 2 blast finisher would be overpowered.
Mighty Blow
Cluster Bomb
Dragon’s Tooth
Eruption
ThunderclapClearly 4,8s is grossly overpowered. I’d like some more blast finishers as well…but Rangers aren’t the only profession lacking in that department, so doesn’t seem unintentional.
It would be considering rangers have awesome combo fields. Can you imagine how much a bunker ranger could heal using all those combo finishers in healing spring.
Optional pets. Period. The pet should be a build preference, not a class mechanic. And no, it’s not “ANet’s version of the ranger.” The Guild Wars ranger was hand over fist better than this…thing. In no game anywhere, even the original GW, are ranger’s specifically pet classes. Those are called Beastmasters.
Since they got rid of the trinity, ANet needed something to make Ranger’s unique and they went with the pet. It’s impossible to make it optional now, since it’s the class-specific ranger mechanic. And even if it was possible they won’t change it because that would mean ANet would have to admit they were wrong with this. Fat chance.
I troll because I care
Keep the pets but allow you to use them as a ‘spirit buff’ depending on the pet used. For example, a Jaguar pet once captured gives you the F2 ability and a Precision buff. Perhaps even a catlike aura graphic surrounding you that identifies what beast you are channeling.
Need some Toughness then perhaps your other choice is a bear. The graphic for Greatsword Maul is a nice aura effect as an example.
In other words, if you use the pets as ‘pets’ then ultimately you have more power and utility with a roaming dps/agro machine but if you choose to stow the pet you get some bonus along with the general flavor of the pet. This keeps the act of collecting pets and pet choice an important factor but also allows you to stow the pet if you like and gain some benefit while keeping with the Ranger aesthetic.
You said pick ‘one thing in your dreams’ right?

This is nitpicking and doesn’t serve a point but the Rift Ranger is a petclass :P
Pet can move while casting.
Pets take 30% less damage from NPC AoE, and 15% less damage from player AoE.
This.
WHY have they not done anything with ANY class’ pets and AoE?
The ai of the pets is my only problem with the class.
Only one? There’s so many “housecleaning” things I want to suggest lol.
Increase the Longbows autoattack speed to make it’s pressure relevant when skills are on cooldown, and increase rapid fires damage to do significantly more damage than it’s shortbow counterpart (right now, per arrow, the damage is basically the same as the shortbows autoattack).
With every other class in the game that goes class cannon, you know the setup on their build and you know what they can hit you with. The thief is going to backstab you, the mesmer is going to blurred frenzy you while shattering, and the warrior is going to CC you and 100 blades/eviscerate you.
Having mained ranger while playing consistently since beta, I can honestly say that there is nothing that scares me about going up against a glass cannon ranger. The weapon damage has fairly slow execution and is easily avoidable, and the damage is extremely manageable to the point where facing off against a glass cannon ranger doesn’t feel challenging.
I WANT to be scared of a glass cannon ranger. I WANT to see one in the distance and have the same reaction as I would seeing a thief/warrior/mesmer: “oh crap, if I’m not careful, he’ll spike me down before I can react and there will be nothing I can do. Check my cooldowns, and have my weapon evades on hand for this.”

Make pet optional like in GUILD WARS.
I waited since I first heard about gw2 in 2008 or 2009. Played ranger in the first one. Loved it, could bring my pet when I felt I needed him or leave him home when I didnt want him. Now i’m kittening forced to have a stupid AI that is half my kittening characters damage. Unbalanced like hell. Totaly kittening ruined the game for me. I wish I could have my money back. I was stupid enough to preorder this game as soon as I could but should have kittening waited. Now I know what to do next time.
Thank you.
And by the kittening way. Look a all the “what do you wish they did with the ranger” posts. Half is about idiot pets. kitten .
How about remove the range dependency of damage on longbow since you won’t be able to stay at max range 90% of the time.
Give us viable and wanted in groups marksman/archer build, preferably with LB. Doesn’t matter how, if needed I can sell my pet for it.
The most?…
Longbow attack speed, maybe.
But there is much more I would like to change ^^

Warhammer Online had optional pets for both the Squig Herder and the White Lion.

Spirits to have no HP and just be like banners. Can’t be killed … they just exist for the time they say.
I’ve mentioned it before, but i can do it again.
Give me the same pet control I had as a hunter i WoW. Or like hero’s in GW1. (That my pet should be able to jump on a target and gnaw his head off is implemented in this suggestion.)
Rangers should be able to get some kind of buff when not using their pet. However, since Ranger’s dmg is directly tied to the pet, it would have to increase the dmg no matter what and then maybe have a secondary effect depending on which pet we dismissed for the buff(this is basically what Warlocks could do in WoW).
Example: Dismissing a cat could grant XX% increase in dmg and crit dmg. Dismissing a bear could grant XX% increase in dmg and XXX toughness, etc.
Spirits to have no HP and just be like banners. Can’t be killed … they just exist for the time they say.
That really makes so much more sense to be honest banners are the ones that should be able to be destroyed while spirits should be like ghosts right, ok we can kill ghosts too in gw2 but it seems backwards to me.
Pets die with the master reduce pets damage so it wouldnt be OP.
