If you could swap your ranger for any other class, would you?
In one word:
Yes.
And the only reason I haven’t is the investment of time I have (wasted) spent on it. I want to get to lvl 80 so I can see how the end-game is. I just wish I didn’t have to slug through it with this character.
I just got to 80 a few nights ago. You’re in for some disappointment.
Tarnished Coast
Depends on what you want to do at level 80. Level 80 content is fine for me (W3).
I wouldn’t trade my Ranger. I enjoy playing her. The class may have a few hiccups, but overall it’s a solid class. Assuming you take the time to learn the class.
Don’t give up on your Ranger if you enjoy it. MMOs are fluid and a few months down the road when your Thief/Warrior/Mesmer/Engineer/whatever gets nerfed you’re going to be crying about that Ranger you abandoned at level 30.
After this post from JonPeters my answer is: yes, without missing a heartbeat.
Yeah, I can see where you would have gotten “l2p” from my “don’t give up” post. /rolleyes
The fact of the matter is that most people would rather whine about shortbow/pets/whatever and reroll instead of saying, “Okay, shortbow is borked. I wonder would happen if I made a build focused on greatsword defense and traps (or any other weird build you can think of).”
My post wasn’t a l2p post. It was a “learn to think outside the box” post, perhaps, but not a l2p post. Take it however you wish though. See you on the Warrior forums?
Ever thought that some people like beeing ranged and not melee? I love my pets and I am an Archer irl, it’s a sport I love. I’ve been a ranger in GW for 7 years. Why did I choose ranger?

The Ranger can also tame the beasts of the wild and command them to fight at the Ranger’s side. The Ranger is the master of the targeted distance attack and Rangers get the most out of ranged weapons like bows.
Why do I have one in GW2?
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/ranger/
Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows.
With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.
I’m assuming you crossed those parts out because they aren’t parts that you were interested in? Personally, i’m with you, i went down the path of ranger because i absolutely LOVE the bow, always wanted to do archery/own a bow since i shot one a few times in boy scouts (still haven’t done either of those things =( ), the pet thing was also HUGE for me.
However the traps, adaptability, and nature spirits also played a role in me wanting to play one (granted the traps and spirits were minor).
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna

Where did I say you have to play a melee Ranger? I gave greatsword as an example. Second, we also have access to the longbow and axe. Both of which are ranged weapons.
I’m not 100% sure where you’re going with your post.

Again,
GW1, the line that specifically mentioned bows on
http://www.guildwars.com/gameplay/professions/ranger/:
The Ranger is the master of the targeted distance attack and Rangers get the most out of ranged weapons like bows.
Alltho the ranger did see many nerfs in GW1 I was still happy, and still am of how it played with a bow and it felt like the Ranger was the master of targeted distance attack. The pets were much more responsive imho, more easily controllable and the pets were completely optional.
GW2, https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/ranger/:
Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows.
Unparalleled archers? Nope, well not after the animation fix imho. As for longbow, it lacks, definatly when you see how the Warrior performs with one. Ranger doesn’t outperform a Warrior with GS but a Warrior with Longbow will outperform a Ranger with Longbow in most cases.
And why don’t I play a Ranger with other weaponsets besides shortbow & Axe/Warhorn?
- Sword/Warhorn: I tried it, ran into issues with the 1st skill, I did give it a couple of weeks but it just didn’t work well and I found myself switching to it less and less over a period of time untill I asked “Isn’t there anything more useful?”, and then I switched to Axe/Warhorn.
- Offhand Dagger: Crippling Shot, Poison Volley. No need for another cripple/poison skill & I don’t really like melee alltho i’m trying to like it.
- Offhand Torch: Lacking, doesn’t give much. Only one skill I would use instead of 2, Bonfire. I think Warhorn was more useful then Torch.
- Axe offhand: First skill kinda useless imho and I never really had problems with incoming projectiles. If I did have problems with projectiles then I would still not use it because afaik, you can’t move while using Whirling Defense.
- Greatsword: Again I don’t really like melee and if I do wanna play with a GS it’s gonna be on my Warrior, Mesmer or Guardian because I think they are better with it.
Anything else?
