In case people want a reminder about range.
You do realize that the name “Ranger” does not imply usage of ranged weapons right? It just so happens that the Ranger archetype often overlaps the Archer archetype in many games.
Thank You OP for this informative post, now I can sleep at night …

i’d just like to point out that, whilst in the real world, this is true, it’s fairly obvious that ranger was intended to be a master of range, or at least a master of bows.
quoted from anet themselves
“Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. .”
that being said, i’m happy with the damage on our longbow, along with the range associated with it. what we need is more focus on the other things. team support, utility, etc.

80 Ranger(main)/Guard/Elementalist – Proud Owner of Kudzu
Hmm…I don’t believe I’ve run into your Ranger this week during our match up.

I know, right? Now all these people complaining about longbow damage can like, be quiet for a while.
Because even factoring a rapid fire cast into autoattacks+ pet, an ele’s lava font+fireball alone OUTDPS all that and do it as aoe on top of it all.
And let’s not even touch Meteor Shower vs. Barrage.

sorta offtopic, but i haven’t been playing much lately due to IRL issues.

I haven’t played much either cause I been decorating a non-respawn dungeon in skyrim as a new home ;-) but i did play for 3 hrs tonight on my own bl and it is still fun ;-)
An ele with fireball+ lava font still outdamages a longbow ranger by a good margin, and does it as aoe damage to boot with fire fields that actually help the group.
But hey don’t expect the RANGEr to be the best ranged class when PvP whine gets in the way of the class ever being good anywhere else.
Ranger LB stacks Vulnerability
Also Ranger has a higher armor class and base health

And less active defenses, in case you forgot to figure in cantrips and blast fields, or access to projectile reflects.
But hey necromancer has the highest health and death shroud, and they so totally bunker better than eles or guardians who only have 11k base health, right?
Except fireball can be easily strafed, isn’t 1.5k+ range when traited, and lava font doesn’t track through stealths / teleports.
LB is a much better single target long range weapon. Old mate above me seems to forget that we have the ability to swap weapons, whereas eles don’t.

Not going to argue Anet’s class description, but on that note do you know where Anet has been hiding the Greataxe in the Warrior class art or the Necro skill that uses Life Force to “bring allies back from the brink”?

The greataxe could be plans for the future, could just be a normal axe that just appears big, or could just be one of those things they did that “looks cool” (there have been lots of things that npc or in artwork that classes can’t actually do. e.g. the spreadshot skill in one of the earlier ranger videos)
as for the necro… well, it’s not a great excuse, but it’s somewhat up for inerpretation. maybe by “allies” they mean the minions that you summon, and you’re “summoning them from the brink”. or they could refer to wells that give regeneration, or their ability to pull conditions from allies.
I do agree with you in that we should all definitely take Anets words with a grain of salt, because, in my opinion, they have a habit of unintentionally (or intentionally) manipulating people. not necessarily lying, but twisting the truth.
With that said, it’s hard to argue that the ranger wasn’t intended as filling a large portion of the “archer” archtype (granted, i think warrior to an extent also fills a little bit of that role. the difference between a single archer that fires with precision [which would be the ranger] and the archers on a castle wall, pelting a general area with arrows [the warrior])
I guess you could technically disagree, since it’s not fact… but to say ranger wasn’t intended as being able to fill the archer archtype (granted they can fit other things. such as a beastmaster, or a skirmisher), I would definitely disagree with

lol longbow shots are stupidly easy to strafe, especially at 1500 range. The mere fact you even mentioned 1500 range signals to me the usual culprit of sour hotjoin/wvw grapes, people who die to a ranger from 1500 range deserve what they get, it couldn’t get possibly any easier to dodge longbow attacks from 1500 range.
Tracking through stealth and teleports? Sure, if your thief is kittened and not double dodging your rapid fire channels, as that’s virtually the only thing you have on a longbow. It doesn’t even track through teleports if the opponent ports across you.
These people singing the praises of longbow are probably farming upscales in WvW or hotjoin. When you see rangers showing up in spvp at the same rate as eles, or rangers making the same representation in guild vs guild as eles, we can talk.
It’s a better weapon than it was before, but for the content that matters such as group pvp and pve, the ele staff is a far superior weapon.
Good for you, you can swap to another garbage weapon unlike eles, too bad none of those weapons you can swap to put down water fields and clear conditions, don’t put fire fields for might stacking, do less dps, do less aoe, don’t lay down aoe chill fields or give you mobile reflection unlike that garbage whirling defenses, won’t give you a line of warding and it won’t root people.
But hey, you might be able to win a duel against some people, how useful in a team objective game!

Sadly you are saying the truth. I like playing ranger unfortunately it has all the drawbacks you point out and more.
As i’m tired to say: this class is so kitten broken is almost unplayable
Yeah lets compare it to an Ele, wich is by far the most usefull profession in any part of the game. Why not compare it to an engi instead of that. Or a thief.
