I’m just now leveling my Ranger. I love the look of a GS ranger, but is it practical? I mostly run dungeons and WvW.

Another quick question: longbow or shortbow. Which has greater DPS?

Yes, all of the weapons are viable. Some go better with certain builds though. GS is excellent for a mobile/defensive playstyle. Best escape a ranger has access to as well as a setup for pet burst. Not as much raw damage as other weapons, but still puts out its own.

yes. i use it mostly for the gap closer. 1100 range swoop is magnificent.

GS also is great for bm specs since gs 5 makes next pet attack do 50% damage

I run with it for… actually all of the skills. #1 is a good general attack with a built-in evade, #2 complements my condition stats, #3 is an awesome gap closer/wannabe-Ride the Lightning, #4 is a block, knock-back, and cripple in one, and #5 is a good interrupt and opportunity for your pet to get a good dig in.

It might not do as much damage as other weapons, but like the LB it’s a good utility weapon, and one that I keep equipped at all times now. You might not have as good a time with it (or any melee weapon) if you’re a glass cannon, but running a BM bunker variant myself, I simply love it.

GS is quite useful. Gap closer, evade, block, and knockback, all in one weapon. I’d just pair it up with a higher damage dealing weapon.

I personally typically run SB/LB, occasionally switching to SB/GS when melee is more useful (such as against Subject Alpha in CoE).

I use GS in paid tournaments. Therefore, it is viable.
