Is Ranger A good solo profession ?
I thoroughly enjoyed leveling my ranger until Orr. Because of Orr, I stopped playing altogether until some friends talked me into coming back. I’m leveling an Elementalist at the moment for a change of pace, but the ranger is awesome for pve leveling in my experience.
Yes it would. Rangers are the best class for solo leveling imho. For regular pve.

Cool. I’m going to set the Mesmer I was leveling down for a few and see how solo gameplay is with the Ranger.
Thanks for the replies.

The mesmer is hard to solo, specially the first levels, it gets better at 40 or more, even better at 80. Ranger tho are good solo, you can take almost any quest or mob without much problem since the pet take all the dmg, on solo PvE rangers doesn’t have many issues.

Yeah.I’m at 52 now with the Mesmer so on second thought I might as well get him to 80 before starting on a new character since the grind is so long. Thanks for the information though.

I roam solo in WvW and take out guards and with 1 other person can nuke down a supply depo, might be able to solo them when I hit 80 and have decent gear. (I have been killing guards since level 10…)
Dude, what’s the question?
Rangers are bad at anything BUT running around alone, in which they perform so great, Anet is afraid of buffing anything about the ranger. :>
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
I don’t understand how you can all claim the ranger is the best solo profession. They’re terrible at fighting alone.

We are the easiest class to level, and the easiest to solo open-world PvE content because we have pets to tank/distract. Unfortunately, pets fall short in high-level PvE content, which is why we are regarded as the worst profession.

The Ranger is still the best open world PvE profession, in my opinion. The fact that you always have a companion with you, has a lot of benefits. Even something as simple as running thought Orr is a lot easier with the Ranger, as the pet will take the majority of incoming damage, thereby making it a lot easier for you to keep moving. Dungeons are a different matter, but personally I haven’t had any problems there either.

This has to be a joke.
Ranger is by far the best class in the game at solo PVE, honestly it’s not even close. The only one that can even come close in solo survivability is a Guardian.
If you’re getting downed in PVE with a Ranger you’re doing something REALLY wrong.

lol @ asking what the question is then answering it at the same time.
Classic…..I needed that laugh.I was having a slow day and you just jump started it.
Thanks for the reply.
I personally would say the Guardian is about on par when it comes to solo play, considering their decent balance of inherent defensive abilities and decent damage output.

I soloed a Guardian to 80 with little to no problem so if the Ranger comes close to that or is better I think I’m gonna jump into the profession being a person fond of soloing.
As far as this Mesmer is going, I may find a group to run with instead of soloing.
I can keep him alive but I find myself retreating a lot when mobs get heavy more so than I did with the Guardian and Warrior professions.
Thanks for your reply.

Same here. I still use my Guardian for Dungeons because Ranger doesn’t cut it in that area, but in open world PVE I run a Beast Master build and it’s crazy just how good it really is. Guardian is awesome and can match the survivability of a Ranger, just Ranger does it so much easier. On my Guardian I find myself changing up traits and weapon sets depending on the zone I’m doing while on my Ranger I don’t change anything at all. I always have my Short Bow, Great Sword and my Pets and I can handle anything that comes my way.
Taking nothing away from Guardian, that class is fantastic. I just have more fun in PVE on a Ranger.
Guardian gets hit. A Ranger rarely gets hit.

Ehm, no. If we’re talking about open world pve, as in, pve outside dungeons, you simply can’t go wrong with the ranger class. It’s by far the “best” profession for that type of play.
Say hello to dungeons, and things change. A lot.

Oh man, you must have been like me and tried to play through it pre-patch. So many undead, so little safezones…but good news, they patched Orr so the amount of mobs in total is cut by at least 1/2. So you won’t have anywhere NEAR the annoyance as before.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Orr is like a walk in the park – warm, cozy and without challenge. Nowadays, anyways!
Now it is, but before that patch…jesus christ was it difficult, even WITH exotics. Example here, with me attacking a single enemy.
If I stayed at long range, I’d get attacked by a Risen nearby. If I got in mid range, I’d get attacked by a Risen nearby. If I got into close range, I got attacked by a Risen nearby.
Orr was the equivalent of a mall on the day before Christmas in terms of how close Risen were to each other!

Ranger is good for nothing.
Wether solo or not solo doesn’t matter.
Roll a warrior for PvE.
I also think the ranger is the best at soloing open world pve. I have played characters on every profession. With the ranger, I have died the least of any of them. My ranger is currently level 63. I have died only about 3 or 4 times in total. And I don’t think I am a particularly great player. I am average at best. I have been playing my ranger as a LB/SB ranger. This makes it easy to avoid damage, when I have my pet doing the meleeing. When I do get caught up in melee, that means that my pet has “free” hits on them.
To say rangers are bad at soloing in pve, is flat wrong.

Yes, I thought I was pretty clear that I meant in open world PVE not in Dungeons. As stated earlier in the thread, for Dungeons I use a Guardian.

I’ll drop your warrior anyday.
Shameless self bump to my most recent dueling video. Warrior can’t touch this. Rangers, you are good. Just look beyond your regular cookie-cutter builds, and needless tendency for berserker gear. Also, try to consider the viability of close-medium range weaponsets.

Bingo.
I suppose I should provide something a lot more serious to this thread. So… I’d say every profession has their own ways of dealing with rumbling about and exploring (except maybe the thief), however, the ranger is easily on the edge for making exploration trivial.
What rangers bring to a fight is a second body that they can refresh fairly frequently, strong consistent damage and pretty strong healing. This can often lead to rangers soloing enemies they have no right to, which is why Arenanet is hesistant to give us buffs to bring us up to par in some other areas of the game.
However, I’d recommend playing the profession you enjoy the most for exploration, because it’s not just about exploring the world.

Sad but true. Rangers are great at solo open world PVE. That’s why most bots are rangers. And that’s a big part of why Anet is hesitant to buff rangers.

I would use sword, but I love the greatsword’s utility so much that I can’t put it down…and I tend to carry a SB on me for 1v1 matches and replace it for a longbow for defense of towers and zerging.

^^ This, Warriors are fodder….I stand in toe-to-toe and straight tank/dps them down…

Same here Sarlack. Warriors are by far the easiest class to take down for a Ranger. They run into traps, you can keep them at bay with range, and it’s very hard for them to do substantial damage to a Ranger as long as you keep back.

Yup yup…I almost feel sorry for them on LB/SB as they are quite manageable with cripples, snares, knock backs…very rare if ever they get their mitts on me…with my regen build I dont even try to avoid them anymore…I just DPS them down right in their face.
